Is it do a poo or have a poo?

What do you say?

I say neither because I never mention these things.

What is correct english language wise?
If you're doing a poo, you're doing something so that makes sense. Having a poo sounds like you're eating it.. But then we say 'have a shower' don't we? Not do a shower. I don't like when people say 'I'm going to get a shower' (is B&Q open)?

Sorry. I'm having a day off from life today and this just sprang into my head. Humour me please.

The correct verb is ' to pass'.

'I am passing a stool'

'I am passing a motion'.

In extreme circumstances the verb 'produce' is permitted. ' I am producing a faecal deposit.

Verbs matter. HTH.

Although of course, anyone with a modicum of class and/ or breeding refrains from such vulgarity in conversation.

Northernsoullover · 08/01/2021 19:57

My brother says lay some cable.. I say number 2. Number 2. Easy to understand, fairly polite.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 08/01/2021 20:00

DH and I get into this conversation more often than most because he’s American and I’m British. He says ‘take a shower/nap/shit/walk’. It annoys me an unreasonable amount. I’d say ‘have’ for shower/nap/poo, but I’d go for a walk...

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 08/01/2021 20:02

Generally I’d just say ‘I’m going to the lav/loo’ though. The one common Americanism that really irks me in this arena is grown adults saying they’re ‘going potty’. 🤢

Need a poo?

Dogissue · 08/01/2021 22:35

Why did the baker have smelly hands?

Because he kneaded a poo (I'll get my coat)..

I don't like the word 'poo' either. Fine for children, not for adult conversation. In my house, we defecate.

Mittens030869 · 09/01/2021 01:32

@IncorrigibleTitmouse It's better than calling it the 'rest room', I've always thought that daft. Wink

RizzleDrizzle · 09/01/2021 02:31

Those of you saying need, surely that’s the feeling of needing before the act,

when your thirsty you need a drink to stop needing a drink you have a cup of tea, you are drinking tea from a cup and then you’ve had a cup of a tea.

Similarly you need a poo, to stop that you have a poo. You are pooing in the toilet (hopefully) when you’ve finished you’ve had a poo

CharlotteRose90 · 09/01/2021 03:15

I’ve heard it so many times as going to drop the kids off at the pool. Knocks me sick

DBML · 09/01/2021 03:23

I say ‘Excuse me, I’m just going to pop to the restroom.’

warmandtoasty2day · 09/01/2021 11:06

why does anyone need to tell others what they are going to do in the loo ? Confused does anyone say 'l need to change my tampon / sanitary towel, empty my catheter / change colostomy bag ??

Dogissue · 09/01/2021 14:47

warm I totally agree! I never say so unless it directly affects someone eg I'm in middle of a conversation at work,I'll say 'scuse me a moment just going to the loo' or if I'm sitting in a pub with someone I'll say "just popping to the loo' or if I'm amongst people and need to excuse myself generally. Otherwise, nope.

DappledThings · 09/01/2021 14:54

Either is fine, as long as you continue to refer to poo and not poop.

Dogissue · 09/01/2021 14:59

Poop is abhorrent. As is 'pooh'.

Anything expelled from the downstairs region takes the verb to have.

Have a shit, have a piss, have a period, have a baby, and in unfortunate circumstances have a prolapse.

In fairness if I didn't have a small child in the house the only thing I'd need to say is "I'm going to the loo" but all too often these days I find myself saying "bugger off, I'm having a poo!"

ParlezVousWronglais · 09/01/2021 15:04

and you’re going to faff around and be leisurely about it.

This describes one of my family perfectly.

ParlezVousWronglais · 09/01/2021 15:05

Reading material lined up and everything.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 09/01/2021 21:12

@Mittens030869 Agreed! Doesn’t sound right at all, does it? I still call it the loo, even after years living here.

Plussizejumpsuit · 09/01/2021 21:23

I'd say have a poo. Do a poo sounds like something a toddler would say.

Doublefaced · 09/01/2021 21:27

I have a colleague who announces that she’s going to ‘make a pee before I go’

Reader, it gives me the rage.

KaptainKaveman · 09/01/2021 22:01

Why do people feel compelled to inform others of their bowel movements? Why do you imagine they want to know?

Calmandmeasured1 · 09/01/2021 22:04

Going for a poo.

Vaughan32 · 10/01/2021 08:11

'Doing a poo is pooing'. 'Having a poo' is when you take your book with you. More of a treat.
