To ask how the fuck one hoovers the stairs with a Henry??

Got a Henry (or Harry to be precise) for the first time in years.

How the hell do you hoover stairs without ending up in A&E. it's taken me 45 minutes and my body has done things and been in positions I didn't know it could. I'm absolutely exhausted.

Any tips on this? I have two sets of stairs for what it's worth.

When I had one I used to make DH or one of the DC hold it a few steps below me.

Givemeabreak88 · 08/01/2021 12:14

I hoover mine no problem, I hoover the bottom set using the pipe then go upstairs and hoover the top set downwards,

shouldistop · 08/01/2021 12:14

I get dh to carry it behind me. Now I've got a cordless hoover as well as Henry so I just use that instead.

spanieleyes · 08/01/2021 12:14

Henry at the bottom, long extension hose and the small pet hair head, work your way half way up the stairs. Then disconnect, carry Henry upstairs to the landing and work down until you meet in the middle. Repeat for second flight.

CherryValanc · 08/01/2021 12:15

The tube stretches and he just sits at the bottom or top.

This is what I do.
queenMab99 · 08/01/2021 12:17

The hose almost stretches from the ground floor to the first landing, then I go upstairs and work downwards to do the rest, the small upholstery attachment works best on the stairs, to get into the corners.

Snackz · 08/01/2021 12:17

@truetuesdays I use a plug downstairs for the bottom half and a plug upstairs for the top half.

Many a time though, poor Hettie has tumbled down the stairs...

Vintagevixen · 08/01/2021 12:18

My Henry is Cordless so not problem, I just hoover from the bottom then balance him on the top and go downwards.

I also have a handheld Shark so sometimes use that too!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 08/01/2021 12:19

I love Henry but he's no good for the stairs. He either tumbles down or shins me.

So I got a little Vax to do the stairs with. Got a shark first but he's rubbish

pickingdaisies · 08/01/2021 12:24

My DM used to use a dustpan and a very robust little brush to do the stairs, then hoovered from the bottom as far as she could reach. I think she got a good workout, and much safer than balancing Henry. I have a cordless, but I sometimes use a hand brush too, because it's so thorough.

Lolalime · 08/01/2021 12:31

Put Henry on the step above and hold with left hand whilst hoovering with pipe in right hand
Once done, move Henry a few steps above and repeat .
Easy my 10yr old does it ,

TheFaithfulBorderBinliner · 08/01/2021 12:56

Henry hates me, I know he'll make it look like an accident but he's been trying to push me down the stairs for years.
That's the twist you didn't see coming in the next must see Scandi drama - it was the vacuum cleaner that did it....

Mine is too big to sit on the stairs. If you try it fall down as soon as you move the pipe.Either I’ve got narrow stair or yours are wide! Think I’m a but jealous tbh! I have to do the top half of stairs with Henry on landing then bottom half with him in hallway!

OP your thread made me smile. It is always a struggle to hover the stairs with my Henry!!!

rooty123 · 08/01/2021 13:01

Ooh, love a Henry thread!.

My technique is:

Henry plugged in on landing.
Stand near top of stairs, Henry on step above supported by my body.
Use hose without head or tubes and vacuum top 2 treads. This was my old cleaners technique and works better than head.
Work way downwards.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 08/01/2021 13:05

I got a shark lift away after hurting myself badly when our Dyson fell down the stairs on top of me when vacuuming. Be careful whatever you do is all is can say!

One doesn't.

One pretend the stairs don't exist and hopes no one will notice.

One of the many many reasons I utterly hate mine. An expensive mistake as far as I'm concerned. I really don't get the love for them at all

I also have 2 sets of stairs!

satnighttakeaway · 08/01/2021 14:02

I don't understand the problem or why it's different to any other vacuum cleaner, do half from the bottom, carry vacuum upstairs and do half from the top or vice versa depending on where you start.

ginghamtablecloths · 08/01/2021 14:06

With difficulty. I wedge the vac between my feet or knees on the step below and work my way up a few steps at a time, lugging the bloody thing and alternatively gritting my teeth and swearing as I go. This will have to continue until I can splash out on a smaller gadget.

elsaesmeralda · 08/01/2021 14:08

I pull the cord all the way out and plug in at the bottom of the stairs, Henry sits on the step below that I'm Hoovering and balances against my knees and work up like that. I take the whole pipe off and just use the base to Hoover
I am knackered after though! Don't do it with the heating on either 🥵

ohlookout · 08/01/2021 14:12

I hold it by the handle in one hand and vacuum with the other.

CherryValanc · 08/01/2021 14:21

I hate Henry. Won't lie. Mine keeps falling apart - in fact some of the rude is so tightly wedge I can't seperate in and then the other part won't stay together.

The lid frequently comes off it I pick it up buy the handle.

He could do with a tumble down the stairs. I suspect he'd survive though. He just won't die either.

Ditto.

I went from a Henry to a Shark. It's modular, so when it's assembled, it's a full sized upright. Then you can break it apart and just use part of it as a dust buster along with the required attachment. It's all cordless as well. It's excellent for stairs and also for hard-to-reach places such as cobwebs etc.

Bluebellbike · 08/01/2021 14:46

My Henry lives downstairs now. I have a Shark Liftaway upstairs which I use for the upstairs rooms and landing and in Liftaway mode on the stairs. I love my Henry but vacuuming the stairs and carrying him up and downstairs is too much for me.
