To only have a splashback behind the hob, and otherwise just wipeable paint?

I currently have a tiles above my kitchen units, but I'm planning to have them removed because I don't like them. Instead I just want the walls painted with a wipeable paint, and will have a glass splashback behind the oven. This is what I had in my previous kitchen and it worked fine - I hardly ever had to wipe the walls anyway. But is it very unusual? When I mention it to people they sometimes react like it's a bit odd.

Didn't want hassle of grout going horrible so had a big glass splash back with upstands and dulux kitchen paint, it's been fine and looks great

It does also depend on how much cooking you do and how big a work space you have.
We had this previously but now have full tiles. Large tiles and thin grout lines.
If you do go for it the make sure to use good quality kitchen paint so it's easy to clean

I suppose it depends on how messy a cook you are!

We redid our kitchen last year and that was my original plan. We had to wait a while for the glass behind the hob but the walls were painted (and upstand fitted) in the meantime. It was only about 4 weeks and my head was wrecked constantly wiping the wall!! I knew I'd end up having to repaint waaay more often than I'd planned. So I decided to get glass all over instead of just behind the hob, and am so glad we did.

I should also say that our walls were painted white, maybe another colour would have been more forgiving

We don't have any tiles in our kitchen, just paint. Our hob is on a peninsula so no need for a splashback. Its fine

DoubleDessertPlease · 07/01/2021 23:20

We’ve done that, large glass splash back behind the hob, up stands and white matt wipeable paint that cleans easily, so much nicer than tiles imo.

thenightsky · 07/01/2021 23:30

We've got a black sparkly glass splashback behind the hob, but just washable paint behind the sink. I wipe the paint behind the sink every other day or so and its starting to wear out. Wish I'd put glass there too.

PickAChew · 07/01/2021 23:38

I have that - actually had to paint over not at all wipable paint. Even in just over a year, there are grease spots that I can't shift.

RozHuntleysStump · 07/01/2021 23:59

That’s what I have with those worktop up stands. Quite happy with it.

Notjustanymum · 08/01/2021 00:14

Jeez, I have a small plinth behind the whole worktop and no splashback because I haven’t decided what would be the best one to get - for 10 years! Luckily the paintwork is washable so it’s not so bad!
I think I might change the kitchen before I make my mind up!

MrsBennetsnerves · 08/01/2021 00:58

I've had a tiled splashback behind the hob and wipeable paint elsewhere for about 6 years and it's fine.

Lauraa7 · 08/01/2021 05:57

We had this for a while. Tiles are so much easier to keep clean and somehow feel cleaner too.

SIL has this arrangement and she loves it. She bloody loves housework though, her place is immaculate.

Mind you, even she hasn't worked out how to get rid of limescale inside the spout of the waterfall taps in their bathrooms. They've been added to the list of things they won't do in their next house.

FamilyOfAliens · 08/01/2021 07:21

We’re having a new kitchen fitted in a couple of weeks and haven’t decided yet whether to have tiles (my preference).

If we do I’ll use this product to keep the grout white. It’s transformed the tiles in the bathroom - they’re ten years old and look like new.

I like splashback behind sink too

ViciousJackdaw · 09/01/2021 01:04

@Cherrysoup

Do it. I recommend Johnson’s, it’s bonkers hard wearing when I scrub it.
Seconded, I've got this in the kitchen and bathroom and it washes really well.

Ah .... the same here. They look wonderful but trying to keep the spout dry is impossible Sad

You surely mean glass? Loads easier to clean than tiles.
