To only have a splashback behind the hob, and otherwise just wipeable paint?

I currently have a tiles above my kitchen units, but I'm planning to have them removed because I don't like them. Instead I just want the walls painted with a wipeable paint, and will have a glass splashback behind the oven. This is what I had in my previous kitchen and it worked fine - I hardly ever had to wipe the walls anyway. But is it very unusual? When I mention it to people they sometimes react like it's a bit odd.

I had a new kitchen fitted Oct 19 and wanted a large lit glass panel behind my hob across the whole wall section, which was over budget. I painted the area with Crown kitchen paint and it still looks great. Still saving for a fancy glass panel...

Yep we took out all the tiles Shen we updated our kitchen 4 years ago. We have a grass splash back and the rest us just painted, looks great (I think)

I agree with you. We have a shimmery mosaic splashback (doesn't show smears likr glass or stainless steel) and the rest of the kitchen is scrubbable white paint. We have got an upstand that matches the worktop though - our builder recommended it to protect the plaster. He thought we were very odd to not want tiles but I couldn't wait to get rid of grubby grout!

I've just had my kitchen done and painted the plaster too. No tiles. Looks great.

I've just had tiles fitted as we had this but I found the paint got absolutely filthy and splattered with greasy marks.

we went for big rectangular tiles instead with very thin grout

We have this, it works fine. DH says if you can't use a kitchen without getting your dinner up the wall you have other issues - harsh but fair I guess 🤣

I only have washable paint but wish we had tiles ( i have only small wall due to an open part). The.paint still shows up grease splodges no matter what i do. I will prob add a few tiles or a splashback when i get the energy.

We’ve got a splash back behind the hob and behind the sink. I really like it. I wipe the paintwork occasionally as I would tiles, but it isn’t showing any signs of looking shoddy.

We have this in our kitchen op (left by previous owners and I hate it. We have a stainless steel splashback behind the hob, wood worktops and painted white walls everywhere else.

I hate the worktops anyway as they’re really high maintenance, but the walls are the worst. I don’t think we have wipeable paint so that prob doesn’t help, but the walls are constantly grubby, some of the the paint has cracked and peeled where I’ve missed water drops around the join with the worktops.

I think the guys who owned the house before us used to repaint the kitchen every 6 months to keep it looking fresh but I can’t be arsed with it . We’re now looking at having tiles like @Itstheprinciple.

We have a glass splashback behind the hob, and then just the up stand behind the sink and we've had no issues :) we paid more for really good quality wipeable trade paint (Dulux if I remember rightly) and it's been 2 years with no need to repaint!

We have upstands to match the worktops, and then just painted walls up to the wall cupboards. I think upstands and tiles look too much, plus didn’t want the grubby grouting.

There’s a clear glass splash back behind the hob so its fine if you want to change the colour of the walls. The paint is Dulux Easycare Kitchen paint and is really excellent.

We have this. It's awful. But I do loads of cooking. Whenever I whisk or blend anything or have to pour large quantities of something down the sink, or decant stuff, or are doing a massive quantity of food so its spread everywhere, the paint gets splashed, and sometimes it stains or leaves grease marks. I think if I was just heating up dinner for 4 every night though it would probably be ok

We've got the same, and even went for white paint

Near the cooker we do sometimes get light specks but they pretty much come off with wiping. I think I've touched the pain up maybe once in a couple of years or so because we had some extra knocking around.

I have this, a nice glass panel between hob and extractor, one row of basic white tiles behind butler sink and the rest painted with Wilko kitchen paint. (Tiles go out of fashion after a few years and can date a kitchen.) Looks great and has lasted 7 years without issue. Will do a repaint as soon as I get the time as think it deserves it after 7 years.

Our cooker has a lid... So don't even have a splash back! 5 years in. Probably needs another repaint bug if stays fine generally

I'm so happy with my new tiles. I wipe them with glee! Once the blinds (ordered pre-Christmas/lockdown etc) get fitted, I will be very happy.

Do it. I recommend Johnson’s, it’s bonkers hard wearing when I scrub it.

We have splashbacks behind the oven and sink, behind the sink was a later addition and I'd recommend getting that too. Everywhere else we have about 5 cm high upstands and paint. I cook / bake loads and it's never been a problem.

We have a splash back and worktop risers, no tiles. Done 2.5 years now and not a single nark on any walls.

I had this for years as at the time I didn't want tiles but coloured glass and it was too spendy after having paid for granite workgroups.

All wall throughout including behind the hob. Was never an issue. Just wiped down with a bit of Method spray if I got any splash behind the hob. Dulux white kitchen and bathroom paint.

The trickiest bit was behind the sink, the sealant between the granite and worktop would get a bit damp, so would redo it every 2 years.

I painted my kitchen where the tiles were about 10 years ago and it still looks great. It was from the Dulux kitchen range, grease etc splashes don't mark it and it's very scrubbable!

Yep. Same here. Much nicer than manky tiles. And a doddle to keep clean. 15 years old now and still looks modern.
