Addicted to fizzy juice, want to stop. Has anyone done it?

Looking to see if anyone has been in the same position as me. I am addicted to fizzy juice, have been for years. Drink around 8-10 cans a day! I am overweight and feel the fizzy juice is also affecting my health. Has anyone ever been addicted and stopped taking it? Thinking about just starting tomorrow and drinking none, so no gradual reducing. Sounds silly to some but it is a thing that you can get really addicted to lol

Your OP is right, you have an addiction

Sugar is no different to any other addictive substances like nicotine. And it is as harmful.

I would recommend cold turkey. You will feel ill for at least a week, maybe 2. But you need to break the addiction.

A great book about this to motivate you is here: www.amazon.co.uk/Case-Against-Sugar-Gary-Taubes/dp/0307701646?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Or a Video version here:

If you quit sugar, you will lose weight.

Good luck. Don't under estimate the harm that you are doing to yourself and also how hard it will be to quit....but it's 2 weeks max of pain for much improved health, energy and wellbeing

Good luck OP. I used to have an addiction to fizzy juice as well (irn bru) but I've not had any juice at all in 2 years I only drink water. The withdrawal was awful but by day 4 I was feeling much better.

Yes I had an addiction to full fat coke, But it’s been a long process to stop. Started drinking it when I was pregnant with my son (Craving)when I was 20. I’m 46 now!
At my worst was drinking 3 litres a day and used to also get panicky if I didn’t have any in the house.
Managed to kick the habit several times by going cold turkey, Absolutely hate Tea, coffee and dialuting juice, I tried fruit juice but was drinking gallons of that instead. So realised cold turkey and water only was the way I could do it. Longest time I’m managed was a year, but eventually always fell off the wagon.

Started getting palpitations due to hormones and realised fizzy juice was making it worse. So again went cold turkey. Managed 2 years so far.....longest time yet!

Once you manage to stop, after a period of time of not having it it will taste vile so helps you stick to your guns. I only drink water now.

Just good luck OP. Fizzy water might be your friend.

I am Scottish so it’s fizzy juice to me but loving “soda pop” - is this what you guys call it down south?

I stopped drinking fizzy drinks when I was 14 - 15 as it was giving me very bad acne. I was drinking a lot of fizzy drinks and I didn't like my dependence on it as well. Easier said than done but I went cold turkey - I really missed but had to think of the end goal. 10 years later, I don't miss fizzy drinks or sugary drinks and I only drink water except when I'm on holiday where I treat myself to one. Have you considered using tonic water with squash? My partner does that and he seems to enjoy it a lot. Good luck!

No we don't. 'Soda' and 'pop' are American.
