Addicted to fizzy juice, want to stop. Has anyone done it?

Looking to see if anyone has been in the same position as me. I am addicted to fizzy juice, have been for years. Drink around 8-10 cans a day! I am overweight and feel the fizzy juice is also affecting my health. Has anyone ever been addicted and stopped taking it? Thinking about just starting tomorrow and drinking none, so no gradual reducing. Sounds silly to some but it is a thing that you can get really addicted to lol

Fizzy drinks are connected to osteoporosis so you need to stop drinking it.

Carolofthebellies · 06/01/2021 22:49

Also, don't buy it. Don't have it at home even hidden somewhere.

Frestba · 06/01/2021 22:55

It can be done for sure. Diet Coke was one I loved. How about replacing with fruit tea, eg blackcurrant or having fizzy water instead to break the pattern. You get out of the habit after a while. Having been addicted, I find diet coke a bit revolting now.

Thank you everyone. Seriously thinking I will just go cold turkey. Will update tomorrow. Thanks for everyone's opinions

I went cold turkey on Fizzy drinks. I went three months without having any. Had a couple of cans at christmas and that's it.

The withdrawal symptoms werent pleasant.

RumJerrySailorRum · 06/01/2021 23:01

I used to have the occasional fizzy pop, but then I did slimming world where diet drinks were encouraged.
Diet coke, then Pepsi max soon replaced water. I drink neither tea or coffee.

I used to joke I had a 'coke' habit.

I was then gifted a chilly water bottle and I swapped to sparkling water and cordial.

I only drink Pepsi max now as a mixer with my rum, or other fizzy drinks when abroad.

So yes, you can do it. Good luck.

AlwaysLatte · 06/01/2021 23:03

Could you try mixing a little orange juice with sparking water?
Or sparking water with lime slices is lovely!

AlwaysLatte · 06/01/2021 23:05

Oh sorry I see you don't mean juice literally- you could try it though?!

Dancingalong · 06/01/2021 23:06

I’m on day 3, bad head today but hoping I’ll be over that in the next few days. I used to have one a day, then reduced to one every few days but over Christmas that derailed a bit. Hoping to kick the habit for good this time.

AlwaysLatte · 06/01/2021 23:07

Sorry to derail but I’m curious - what do the English call fizzy juice then?
Juice in England only means fruit juice.

DressingGownofDoom · 06/01/2021 23:08

I'm totally addicted to coke, but I'm slowly switching it out for flavoured sparkling water. I have a soda stream but it needs gas, must get some and start using it again.

AlwaysLatte · 06/01/2021 23:09

I love Diet Pepsi abc went through a phase of having about 3-4 cans a day but I stopped when my children got older as I didn't want them having any fizzy drinks.

Carolofthebellies · 06/01/2021 23:18

Diet coke and similar are also very bad for health because they contain artificial sweeteners, e.g. aspartame. It's better to buy sweet drinks with the real sugar or stevia.

BubblyBarbara · 06/01/2021 23:34

To be honest I think you need to have at least one vice, you can’t just give up everything you like. If you’re not eating fast food, smoking or drinking alcohol, a few diet drinks doesn’t seem like an unreasonable reward to me

Bluesmartiesandpandapop · 06/01/2021 23:35

Honestly I think going cold turkey is going to be brutal. Your body will be addicted to both caffeine and sugar. At least substitute some caffeine and sugar initially, maybe try some tea, hot or iced? Or some fruit juice for some of the sugar (mixed with fizzy water) and a coffee or two. Honestly caffeine withdrawals are no joke! And neither are sugar withdrawals! That's not to say don't give up the fizzy juice, but I would step down the levels of sugar and caffeine more slowly. I am in the middl of doing this myself. It's hard work, but I am getting there. When I tried to do it suddenly I had terrible headaches and felt awful.

DianaT1969 · 06/01/2021 23:40

I don't want to alarm you, but I can't see how you're not pre-diabetic if you've been having 80 cubes of sugar a day (10 per can) for a long time. That's before you count any other sugar you eat in a day (chocolate, pasta, bread, white rice etc).
I think you'll feel very rough going cold turkey, but if you can make it past 4 days the cravings should stop. Best of luck. Anyone on here with diabetes will tell you that you're right to sort this out now.

Aquicknamechange2019 · 06/01/2021 23:57

Me. I developed pre-diabetes. Scared me shitless and so I stopped immediately.

SFHJ · 06/01/2021 23:59

This is something I need to do. I don’t drink any diet versions or zero usually full fat coke, Fanta, sprite or irn bru but mainly coke.
I’m starting to suffer with my teeth. Especially after bad HG throwing up to 40 times a day.
I have cut back recently but think I need to go cold turkey!

Sairafina · 07/01/2021 00:18

I can recommend La Croix as an alternative. It comes in loads of flavours and is zero calorie with no artificial sweeteners or sugar

OrigamiOwl · 07/01/2021 00:33

I tried going cold turkey but never managed to give it up. In the end I had to have hypnotherapy to stop drinking coke.

DracarysThis · 07/01/2021 00:35

I stopped drinking fizzy drinks cold turkey after I developed kidney stones because of the stuff. I never want that pain again, it was a turning point for me.

Smiledwiththerisingsun · 07/01/2021 08:02

What is fizzy juice?

Nanny2many · 07/01/2021 14:47

@Gingerkittykat

Alternatively, if you’re drinking soda pop. (Coke pepsi 7up Dr Pepper etc...) ... I would stop calling them fizzy juice cos there ain’t any juice in those drinks! Let’s not kid ourselves it’s anywhere near that healthy!!!

In Scotland we have fizzy juice, diluting juice (squash) and fruit juice, every cold soft non alcoholic drink is called juice. Nobody pretends for a second they are healthy, not that fruit juice is particularly good for you anyway.

Fizzy juice is also called ginger, mainly by the older generation. Just waiting for non Scots heads to explode at that one!

Sorry I was quite rude to say that. Apologies to op. Thank you for clarifying. So interesting how language changes meaning in different part of the world
Meepmeeep · 07/01/2021 14:59

@Smiledwiththerisingsun

What is fizzy juice?
Juice that’s fizzy - like Pepsi and coke. This has already been done to death. Anything you can drink in Scotland that is not tea, coffee, water is juice. Alcohol is also juice in some instances.
misskatamari · 07/01/2021 15:08

Good luck OP. I would say, if you can, to wean down, as they have a lot of caffeine in (and sugar if you're not on the diet ones). The withdrawal from caffeine alone can make you feel really ill, so I would taper it down if possible. I know it's tempting to cold turkey it, but you might end up feeling dreadful and just starting again, so if you can wean off it might prove more successful
