This is not regarding current homeschooling as mine has been off since March.
How as a teacher do you teach children to add up to 10

So say you were teaching using the sum 6 + 2.

Not as you would teach it home as a parent but specifically how it’s taught in schools ?

@lemonsandlimes123

Huh ? I’m not suggesting she comes in to my house during lockdown.
That wasn’t the goal post.

OP posts:
Someonepassthegin1991 · 06/01/2021 19:58

She is however ok the note been in the classroom teaching 30 other children that she isn’t paid to teach but that’s not my problem.

@Slightlydisillusioned it’s ok haha honestly I am not a monster just a really exhausted mum
Who has fought for my child’s education for years.
I think I’m just at boiling point.

Sorry I thought your post was indicating that you were unhappy that the tutor is not able to attend your home. Apologies if I misunderstood

Whatamess666 · 06/01/2021 20:01

We do this lots of ways. Not one of lots of ways but all of these ways.

Physical counters/ materials in front of you in two collections

Counting on. Im going to say six. Can you tell me the next four numbers

Fingers in front of you. Make six. Can yiu add on four more fingers. What's the total?

Fingers in the air (we call it bunny ears so they can't see so they have to know)

Tens frame. Make a six (both a five side abd one or two two and two if that makes sense) then four of another colour. (last time i was at home i used skittles as they gave different colours)

Number line. Counter by 6. Coinr up four more and place your counter

Depending on age number lines as well.

I actually think if you're concerned please do ask the teacher because they can tell yiu what strategies they've taught so far.

Jeschara · 06/01/2021 20:01

Agreed Lemon, maybe the tutor does not feel comfortable going into someones home in lockdown.

MusicalTrifleMonkey · 06/01/2021 20:01

@Someonepassthegin1991 do what you need to do. If you’ve been struggling for ages and you need to deal with it then go for it. Hope you get the response you need.

Someonepassthegin1991 · 06/01/2021 20:03

I’m not asking her to come in to the house in lockdown.
She was willing to attend the home prior to lockdown that’s when she agreed to the actual job.
However it’s not lockdown that has moved the goals post it was well before then.

Someonepassthegin1991 · 06/01/2021 20:04

She in a classroom full of 30 kids and 3 adults though that she isn’t paid to do anything with on the schools demand. :)

VanillaAndOrange · 06/01/2021 20:05

6 in your head and count on 2.

(Ex-TA here)

Jeschara · 06/01/2021 20:07

Sorry OP I misunderstood too.

chocolatepowder · 06/01/2021 20:09

Fingers

Rhiannon13 · 06/01/2021 20:17

So say you were teaching using the sum 6 + 2

First of all I'd use a different sum.

DumplingsAndStew · 06/01/2021 20:21

The best way to write a complaint is to focus on the most pressing and important issues. If how they teach to add two single digits isn't important (and im guessing not as you say she is doing fine with math) then don't include it in the complaint. Just include the big stuff, or it can get overlooked.

Catconfusion · 06/01/2021 20:31

I’m a qualified specialist maths teacher and I would thoroughly recommend Numicon. There are loads of really fun activities you can do with it to improve maths skills,

Benjispruce2 · 06/01/2021 20:42

Use a number line or ruler. Put finger on 6 and make 2 jumps. What number do you land on?
Use objects. Count out 6 pieces of pasta, add 2 more, now count them all.
That’s what we do in school and repeat until embedded.
Talk about it all the time. Mummy has 3 tins of beans in the cupboard, now you’ve put 2 more in so how many altogether?
Use fingers, online adding games.

Jdhshekr · 06/01/2021 20:50

They’re taught to use lots of different methods, starting with concrete (e.g. using counters or similar: making a group of 6 counters and a group of 2 counters then combining the groups and counting them altogether). They move on to drawing dots or counters in this way, then mental methods such as putting 6 in your head and counting on 2 more, or using fingers, then on a number line (find the biggest number, then draw two jumps to find the answer). When they are a bit older they learn column addition too.

Jdhshekr · 06/01/2021 20:51

There is also some focus on memorising the number bonds to and for 10 which helps with rapid recall of facts like these.

hayleysmiles · 06/01/2021 20:59

Are you ok??

Moonflower12 · 06/01/2021 21:01

@2021hastobebetter
Please could you post the link to the book? That sounds really interesting.

Buggy1720 · 06/01/2021 21:02

@Someonepassthegin1991 not sure why it’s anyone’s business what needs your child has. It was a simple question. I’d say number lines, Lego. Number blocks the tv programme do toys you can get too.
As her mother if you feel her needs are not being met lockdown or not you are entitled to fight for them! My nephew is special needs and his education has always been different to main stream. I hope you get the answers you need.

10brokengreenbottles · 06/01/2021 21:08

always an excuse as to why something that was in the plan can not be done

If section F of the EHCP is specific and quantified and DD isn't getting the provision you should complain to the LA. It is the LA that are responsible for ensuring provision in EHCPs is delivered. If after complaining to the LA she still isn't receiving the provision threaten Judicial Review.

Viviennemary · 06/01/2021 21:08

Get those counting rods. They're on Amazon.

oakleaffy · 06/01/2021 21:12

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

You know 6 + 2 isn't 10 right?
😂 I have never heard of ''Number bonds'' but a quick google shows it to be

{Of 10}

1, 9
2,8,
3,7
4,6
5,5
6,4
7,3
8,2
9,1

Or have I got the completely wrong idea ?🧐

Loushome · 06/01/2021 21:17

Have you looked at the school website to see if they have the system online within the ‘Parents’ section? Or possibly a ‘Homeschooling’ section? Ours does deep down but the whole thing about how they teach maths is about 72 pages long Shock It’s mind boggling, especially when you see how they add up horizontally and not vertically in columns like I used to. Not looking forward to that.
