AIBU to go Ewwww at how my eldest's using her re-usable period pads

Now, I'm not against them, just against her tossing them into the main washing pile! I have four kids and do approximately 2 loads minimum a day BUT sometimes some things get left for a while at the bottom - this has lead me, in the past, to insist that ordinary used face flannels are put in a separate container in the bathroom that I can pick up and put in the wash before they start to stink. But given how I feel about face flannels being left to fester I hope you can understand that I'm being rather squeamish about used sanitary towels. At the same time I want to be progressive and save the planet and my youngest will be starting in the next 2 years so umm, if you use them how do you 'deal with them'. I have 3 daughters so need to find a solution suitable for them all.

Don't use them, but I did use washable nappies, so would be tempted to treat pads similarly and keep them in weak Milton solution once used and then put a wash on every 2 days.

Hurtandupset2 · 06/01/2021 15:34

Would that work for you?

Housing101 · 06/01/2021 15:35

Could they be put in a cloth bag right beside the washing machine, so that they go in with the next wash if there is something in there? Could even chuck the cloth bag in too so you don't have to direct see / touch the used pad.

ThePlantsitter · 06/01/2021 15:35

Can you do a lidded bucket with Milton in it or something in the bathroom? Basically a nappy bucket (but they don't need to know that)?

Namechangedforthisoct2 · 06/01/2021 15:35

Buy them Mooncups?!
Sorry not much help!

Notjustanymum · 06/01/2021 15:35

Laundry bucket with lid in corner of loo/bathroom, half full of water with detergent in, emptied and washed each evening on smallest load (by daughter who is “on”)
When more than one on at the same time, take it in turns.

WreckTangled · 06/01/2021 15:36

Dd chucks her straight into the washing machine (after rinsing with cold water) and they get done with the next wash.

Sausagis · 06/01/2021 15:36

Have you talked to her? Just ask her to put them with the flannels?

I'm not sharing stories, there are some weird people on mn.

gamerchick · 06/01/2021 15:36

Yeah you need a container just for them OP put in a spot she can't miss.

SooWoo56 · 06/01/2021 15:36

Get your daughter to wash them out by hand with soap powder in a bowl in the bathroom. That's what most people do unless they are putting on a wash immediately. You can't leave things like that unwashed with rest of laundry. They smell too even after washing if not laundered immediately.

gamerchick · 06/01/2021 15:37

Or maybe it's time to show her how to use the washing machine.

CrotchBurn · 06/01/2021 15:37

Cant you get them to rinse them out in the shower and then put them straight in the washing machine?

StitchesInChristmasTime · 06/01/2021 15:37

Another container just for the sanitary towels is the way to go.

NickMarlow · 06/01/2021 15:37

I rinse mine out when used, then spray them with vanish and keep in a long Tupperware box in the bathroom (box is used only for that purpose!).
Then they can just be added to a wash every couple of days.

Sparrowfeeder · 06/01/2021 15:38

I soak mine after use in cold water and detergent then rinse out the blood stains also in cold water before washing in a hot wash with my towels. Works fine. Doesn't smell if you only leave it a few days.

StitchesInChristmasTime · 06/01/2021 15:38

Or yes, teach her to use the washing machine.

Parkandride · 06/01/2021 15:38

I can't imagine doing 2 loads a day and not being on top of my laundry!
I've always rinsed reusable pads in cold water when I take them off so they're hardly gross. Could she put them directly in the machine or something rather than the wash basket?

Sparrowfeeder · 06/01/2021 15:38

I use a small enamel bucket for the soaking bit. A nappy bucket or similar would also work.

MaliceOrgan · 06/01/2021 15:38

Yeah, that sounds great. Make her think that periods are something to hide and to be ashamed of. Yup, that's going to end well.

Domesticgodmess · 06/01/2021 15:39

I rinse after use then keep in a tupperware box and wash with the bedding.

I wouldn't want anyone just throwing them in the machine as I like to sort laundry.

Sparrowfeeder · 06/01/2021 15:39

If for some reason I don’t or cannot soak them immediately, i fold them up into little parcels using the poppers with the inside liner bit fully folded inwards, once dried it isn’t too bad at all.

Turquoisa80 · 06/01/2021 15:40

I keep mine in a cloth bag until I can wash them

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 06/01/2021 15:43

I keep mine in one of these containers next to the laundry basket, then do them alone on a rinse and spin cycle before adding the rest of the washing to that. I love my cloth pads, I think they're great!

Agree with this. It's one thing to have a separate box/bucket etc for practical purposes or to make sure they don't get stained, but to go "ewwwww" makes you sound more like a teenage boy than a mum.

My DD has those period pants for extra protection and often has leaks on them and onto her sheets. I would never make a big deal about it and just wash them whenever they need it. If she puts them in the main laundry basket they'll dry and be washed within a week. Certainly no bad smells, although they may stain, so as long as she's ok with that, why does it matter?

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 06/01/2021 15:48

Two loads of washing every day?!
