Tax on goods from EU surely not correct?

floridapalmtree · 06/01/2021 12:02

Husband has just had messages from DHL saying they will not deliver goods until £67 tax and import duty is paid. This is on clothing of £240. So 20% added. The items were ordered on 29 December so before Brexit exit.

Sister in law also ordered some goods from same company, also on 29 December, which were delivered yesterday but didn't have any tax to pay, think she may have spent less though.

AIBU that this is too much money? or is this just the way things are going to be post Brexit?

VAT on gifts to folks in the UK from EU countries will be entirely new
and a rather nasty shock for many.

But hey, Blue Passports.

OuiOuiKitty · 06/01/2021 14:39

@Somethingmavelous

I have a tiny creative business selling online, I can't sell abroad now - including Northern Ireland/USA/Europe/Anywhere because the gov website where I need to register for exports keeps crashing so I can't get an export licence - I don't know it's it's worth the paperwork even if I could get a licence Sad I voted remain Sad
I feel bad for small UK based businesses. I'm not in the UK and buy a lot from etsy but will no longer be buying from any UK based business. It isn't worth the hassle. It's not just the fact that we have to pay VAT on receipt but the handling charge makes it really not worth the while. I know lots of people who feel the same(my Facebook has been full of 'I'm looking for an EU alternative to this UK shop) and will no longer be shopping from businesses in the UK. Sticking to EU shops is easier.

I only feel bad for them if they voted remain and if they didn't vote for Boris to "get brexit done"

But yes, like you, I am planning on using EU alternatives.

And this is only the beginning - there will be more and more "fuming" and "livid" posts from those that voted leave and only begin to realise the consequences when it hits their own pockets. This is nothing compared to what is to come. But, yeah - Blue Passport - that won't make you happy when you have to have visas, extra insurance, extra security measures befoe you can move further than the end of your own noses!

And not only MN posts, we've already seen the Brixham fisherman complaining about Brexit, despite the majority voting for it.

Well, this is what happens when you vote for an unknown quantity.

grapewine · 06/01/2021 15:06

There is a reason I never buy from the US. This will be the same now with shops in the UK. I'm going to miss Whittard's tea, though...

Peregrina · 06/01/2021 15:08

Well, this is what happens when you vote for an unknown quantity.

And most definitely what happens when you voted for a party which chose to be led by a liar and cheat. How did you expect him to keep his word to you?

Lonelycrab · 06/01/2021 15:09

No downsides. Only considerable upsides. Hmm

Thelittleweasel · 06/01/2021 15:11

Yes it is one of the strange unforeseen consequences of the Brexit that some voted for. The system before was that if VAT was paid in the exporting country it did not have to be paid when imported here.

Now the seller can take off the EU VAT [but may not] and VAT is added when it comes into UK. Similarly in reverse - we zero rate the export and get proof that it was sent.

@floridapalmtree

Chloemol · 06/01/2021 15:20

So buy from this country then no tax import to pay

Yes, already controls of irish fishingboats being seen in"British" waters! 2021 is going to be fun- what causes the most outrage - covid or brexit? P.S. love your name - I can sincerely recommend a shot of baileys in the morning coffee instead of boring old milk!

You'd be very limited in what you can buy if you are restricted to items fully produced in the UK. Many will have ingredients or raw materials that have been imported.
OchonAgusOchonO · 06/01/2021 15:36

Are you referring to the waters around Rockall? Ireland don't recognise the UK's ridiculous claim to it. Besides, the Wolfe Tones have a that proves our claim to it Grin

SusannaSpider · 06/01/2021 15:49

Hang on... that link seems to suggest that the small item waver for goods under £15 has gone for buying from any country (not just EU). We often buy small bits of stationery or haberdashery from Wish (China) etc. Never pay tax as we are only talking small purchases. So will it be taxed now?

QueenoftheAir · 06/01/2021 15:49

Can we have a new rule? Before anyone can complain about their personal experience of the conseqences of the EU referendum, they have to say
a) whether they voted

and

b) whether they voted Leave or Remain.

If they voted Leave, they are automatically UNREASONABLE.

Crowsaregreat · 06/01/2021 15:52

Oh no, I've heard that's all Project Fear. Just show the post office your blue passport and you'll get your parcel along with a complimentary jar of British jam and a cheeky wink.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 06/01/2021 15:56

No more cheap tat from Wish then!

Thank you for this. Yes, I was referring to the Rockall waters. Love the song and what it expresses!

Angeldust2810 · 06/01/2021 16:11

Same experience on Etsy. Seller from France cancelled my small order because she does not want to register for tax with HMRC in UK.

TatianaBis · 06/01/2021 16:13

This is why Remainers patiently explained that a hard Brexit = higher prices on EU imports.

In 2019 49.1% of UK total imports were from the EU.

VinylDetective · 06/01/2021 16:14

The deep, deep joy of Brexit and we’re only six days in.
