Can you take a newborn for a walk in this weather?

Spent a lot of my pregnancy in lockdown and the one thing that kept me sane was going for daily walks. Just before Christmas our beautiful daughter arrived. It is cold at the moment where we live, not really going above 3 degrees. My partner says it’s too cold to be taking her for walks. I do have a snowsuit for her and would put blankets in the pram too. But is it too cold really to take a very young baby out? I normally walk for at least an hour.

@MaskingForIt

Also, I could be way off the mark here, but this “man wants woman with baby to stay at home” is raising a tiny little red flag with me.

OP, stay alert to what else he might not want you doing. I hope I’m wrong, but this feels like the start of a slippery slope.

Eee have a day off 🙃

Scandi tip

if stationary in a pram (babies dont move much)
make sure to insulate from the bottom !
there is no point piling a mountain of blankets on top if they get cold from below...

so
pram mattress + liner

  • sheepskin
  • optional extra footmuff (preferably down feather)

Dont go crazy with the layers on baby amd make sure they can be removed essily.

ALWAYS CHECK THEIR TEMP AT THE NAPE OF THE NECK !!!

stick a finger behin their head they lay in their cozy pram... they will often be boiling or dripping with sweat while their face and hands feel cold !

Also, in really cold weather, slather some ointment / oily cream on their face /e xposed parts.

There is no time limit to neing outdoors as long as both of you are comfortable.

Both parents are allowed to have fears, concerns and opinions on their new baby. Dad being nervous about the weather is perfectly acceptable despite it being different to mums opinion

He can be as nervous as he likes but hes plain wrong on this. It's fine.

And don't pile the baby up with ten blankets over a snowsuit!

I used to live in a country with VERY cold winters.

The rule of thumb was that babies under 1 should not go outside when the daytime temp dropped below minus 10 C.

I had 3 kids there and my newborans were out and about until minus 10. Well wrapped up, make sure hands/arms can stay tucked in.

You and baby both will feel much better for a walk in fresh air.
Daylight is good for them too - vitamin D etc

Mine slept in the pram in the garden in all weathers apart from fog. One more layer than the layers you are wearing to be outside and they will be fine. I'm sure the fresh air helped them sleep.

I'm a Nanny and I've taken babies out in countries where it's been -20c. Make sure she's completely dry, put her in layers in a snow suit and she'll be snug as a bug.

Yes to being dry actually, a dry nappy before you go out is important
