Can you take a newborn for a walk in this weather?

Spent a lot of my pregnancy in lockdown and the one thing that kept me sane was going for daily walks. Just before Christmas our beautiful daughter arrived. It is cold at the moment where we live, not really going above 3 degrees. My partner says it’s too cold to be taking her for walks. I do have a snowsuit for her and would put blankets in the pram too. But is it too cold really to take a very young baby out? I normally walk for at least an hour.

Of course! Get out and enjoy the fresh air Grin
I have horses and so both mine were wrapped up in their prams and parked up at the farm whilst I mucked out.
My other half grew up in Russia and winters could get to -20 or more, his mother didn't keep him indoors all winter!
Honestly, they'll be fine. Enjoy ☺️

mynameiscalypso · 06/01/2021 08:59

If you put the rain cover over the bassinet, it's like a little greenhouse in there too!

Metallicalover · 06/01/2021 08:59

Definitely not to cold people live in countries with small babies where it is far colder than here. What would you do if you had other children? You wouldn't stay inside.
Get them wrapped up and go out for a walk. It'll do you both good 😊

As long you are sensible and ensure baby is well wrapped and covered, of course you can take her fir walks.

DS was taken for walks in the pram from 2 days old as I had to take DD to and from school (so a two mile walk in the morning and then again in the afternoon). We did that in all weathers.

Remember that baby won’t be generating warmth by movement so she needs to be better wrapped than you.

MusicalTrifleMonkey · 06/01/2021 09:14

@Mammyofasuperbaby 2lbs 14? Oh my gosh, that must have been tough. You are definitely mum to a super baby, 2 super babies

LizzieSiddal · 06/01/2021 09:14

Dd had a baby in October. She was 36 weeks and 6lb. She has been out in all weathers, always in the sling, as baby gets the body heat too. She’s been out for 3 hour walks when it’s been freezing, all fine.

Enjoy your walks.

Another one here who's mid Dec twins were doing the school run from early on.

Snow suit, blankets and is there a wind, their rain cover

Tell him to think back historically. Homes were not centrally heated, insulated or doubled glazed. No cars with heating- no cars! No cheap synthetic insulated clothing- layers of cotton, wool used.
Ok death rates were high...but not cos of cold...that was due to infection, malnutrition etc.
Humans evolved to live with variable temperatures both cold and hot- it’s how we managed successfully colonise all continents ( except the poles themselves) 1000s of years agog did become the dominant species. We were mostly nomadic tribes where babies and young children were always on the move. It was a long way into our history before we started to settle and build houses!
And make sure he reads up to know you don’t catch colds from being in the cold - you catch colds from other people🤦‍♀️

I'd get a foot muff for the pram that's nice and thick. Pop a snowsuit on with hat and lots of layers underneath, then the footmuff on top.

Please do not do this. Foot muff + snowsuit + multiple layers = dangerously overheated baby.
SlothMama · 06/01/2021 09:26

They'll be fine my family in Sweden put their babies in their prams outside for a sleep in -10c!

Just wrap them up warm, the fresh air will do you good too

81Byerley · 06/01/2021 09:29

My first baby was born late November in 1970... when we still put babies in the garden for a sleep all year round! I used to warm his pram with a hot water bottle before I put him in it (didn't leave it in the pram). Then made sure the pram quilt was fairly high, so he was breathing in warmer air. Obviously not near to his mouth and nose. The advice then was to lay newborns on their sides, so that did make it easier. And before anyone jumps, I DO realise that advice has changed since then. I worked with children and babies until 1992, and went along with all the changes that happened in that time. @Sunshine1996 I think your baby will be fine outside for an hour a day on your walk, as long as she's well wrapped up. Don't forget a hat that covers her ears, and mittens. A good tip is to use adult knitted mittens. Put them on over a baby grow, pulled right up to the arm pits, with a cardigan over the top. They won't fall off, and will look like baby mittens.

crystaltips98 · 06/01/2021 09:32

Take the baby out. As long as they are wrapped up well. Fresh air is much better for them than being cooped up indoors all the time. If its windy or really cold i put the rain cover on with a gap in the zip just to take the chill off them but give them freah air

SMaCM · 06/01/2021 09:36

These children don't seem to mind being out in the snow.

Can you take a newborn for a walk in this weather?
Mammyofasuperbaby · 06/01/2021 09:36

Thank you @MusicalTrifleMonkey. Both my boys are premature hence the small size. My eldest was 33 weeks with severe iugr as I had pre eclampsia and possibly hellp and my youngest was 36 weeks with milder iugr and need life saving surgery at 3 weeks old, he was actually outside 3 days later and it was raining

SirVixofVixHall · 06/01/2021 09:51

I also had a December baby. Difficult c section so I wasn’t up to walking for long with her in a sling so soon after the birth, so DH would carry her, but as I got stronger I then had her in the sling which kept her cosy. She wasn’t in a pushchair until the following Winter. If you have a roomy pregnancy coat or jacket then you can button that over her in the sling, with just the top open, and you will both be snug and warm for walks.

littlepieces · 06/01/2021 09:55

Absolutely! Wrap up, get outside and get some air. And congratulations.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 06/01/2021 09:58

Don’t worry about her birth weight. My DS was born 5.11 weight and is now a strapping rugby player (when they are allowed to train/play again). My son was in Canada in the winter as a baby. He was out in v cold weather -15 cold. It’s fine.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 06/01/2021 10:00

Opps I meant -5!

TryingnottobeWaynettaSlob · 06/01/2021 10:00

I’ve lived in very cold countries and was told by the locals that you shouldn’t take the babies or kids out if its past -10 ( I used to take my DC out in -5) so I think you will be fine here!

Aimee1987 · 06/01/2021 10:00

Yeah my son was born Christmas week ( a year ago). We went out for walks from when he was home from hospital. Just wrap him up in something warm.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 06/01/2021 10:00

I would put a blanket or rain cover over the hood to keep the very cold air off the baby’s face.

Absolutely fine to be out and about.

I wouldn’t be 30 mins away from home if baby was likely to want feeding though.

hansgrueber · 06/01/2021 10:04

I was a February baby and apparently I spent a lot of time in my pram in the garden. as long as it wasn't raining heavily. I survived into my 70s so far and don't seem to be as prone to colds as many of my friends.

PrincessBuggerPants · 06/01/2021 10:05

Yes of course it is fine.

Layer them right up, make sure the rain cover is on to keep them dry and out of the wind and check their torso frequently to make sure it is warm.

Taking them out in a sling is also much more effective at keeping them warm than you may assume. Layer them up, but no pram suits in the sling.

Don't put a hot water bottle in the pram though! That is terrible advice and could cause burns and scalds!

Monkeymilkshake · 06/01/2021 10:05

Sure you can. Put her in the snowsuit in the pram. If she gets cold add a little blanket. Enjoy your walk.
