Five years ago I took a career break from an increasingly demanding role. My DH's business was starting to do well and by cutting back we've managed ok, and it's been lovely, after years in a stressful work environment, to spend time raising our DCs.

The DCs are becoming increasingly independent and it's now making sense for me to go back to work. I'd really like a different direction from my original career and have good transferable skills, but when I think back to the various roles I've had, I can't think of one that I could say I really enjoyed. It was just something I could do to the required standard that paid the bills and enabled the time not at work to be enjoyable. None were what I would call fulfilling (although quite well paid).

I thought most people's jobs were the same, but I've been very inspired by another thread on here where so many people are saying how fulfilled they are by their work. I'd just like to know, if you love your job, what do you do?

Absolutely love my job, been doing it for 25 years, its taken me all over the world. Its been stressful, hectic, sometimes sleep depriving but I wouldn't swap it for anything else - (Computer Software in case anyone is interested)

PierretheBear · 06/01/2021 16:48

Love my job - I'm a consultant geologist. Usualy quite a bit of travel (not so much in 2020, but 2021 looking busy). It's busy, interesting, often stressy, but work with a great team, and some lovely clients.

Iamclearlyamug · 06/01/2021 16:52

I’m self employed working with horses, and even though I complain when the wind is howling and it’s pouring with rain and I’ve had damp feet since 6am, I’d still sooner die than sit in an office all day (I hate people 😂)

Littlewhitedove2 · 06/01/2021 16:57

I really love it. I found what I loved and made money from it, enough to work however much I want or need. Never have to work for anyone else again.
Find a way to make money from doing what you love and you’ll never work a day again in your life

JanuaryJonez · 06/01/2021 17:29

@Littlewhitedove2 wow - can you elaborate a little?

OP posts:
TidyDancer · 06/01/2021 17:43

No.

I am good at what I do and I work with some amazing colleagues but the management team above me is absolutely fucking useless. At least a third of the entire team will look to leave when pandemic restrictions are over solely because of management incompetence.

Spaceprincess · 06/01/2021 18:24

I love mine, I'm a physio

Octopus37 · 06/01/2021 18:48

I work as a freelance merchandiser/price checker. I love the flexibility, it has worked very well whilst I have been bringing my kids up, especially as my DH works shifts. The work is more me than Secretarial work which I have done previously. Sometimes I find it a bit tedious when store managers dont want to speak to you. I have recently started working for a company that actually offers holiday pay which is great, as I do sometimes struggle with the no holidays, no sick pay etc. I feel very lucky to have keep working through Covid and as I am registered with lots of different agencies, there is always work around. However, I am nearing my late 40s and getting a bit sick of not earning much more than the minimum wage, especially as I have a degree. I like writing and used to have a blog, so I am doing a Level 4 Diploma in Copywriting (started it in November) which is going well do far. I'm hoping that I can continue to do freelance work, with a view to eventually getting a permanent job, although I know its going to take a long time.

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/01/2021 18:56

I had two full-time jobs I really enjoyed. Now I can't work 'properly' due to long-term mental health issues I do sessional and ad-hoc roles and I love it. Something new to do all the time, it's all interesting and I feel like I'm using all my skills. I won't ever go back to a proper job. It does mean I'm generally always keeping an eye out for work and I have to balance lots of different commitments. My income fluctuates too.

Baileyscoffeeandcampfires · 06/01/2021 19:02

Love my job
I work at racecourses taking bets

Can pick and choose the days / meetings I work. The vast majority of people are there to have a good time and are lovely to us.

The people watching is amazing. Some of the outfits at the start of the day and then behaviour of drunks at the end of the day is amazing

Limosa · 06/01/2021 19:09

I'm a researcher in the Civil Service and I love it. I love research and would carry on in any setting, but I recently joined the Civil Service and love it. Everyone's lovely and there's a real focus on development, work life balance and you work on really interesting projects that everyone genuinely hopes will improve society one step at a time. I work 3 days a week, flexitime which has been brilliant with small kids and lockdown.

Oblomov20 · 06/01/2021 19:12

I do accounts. I love it.

BerlinCalling · 06/01/2021 19:13

I like mine. I get to read for a living and don't have to have any contact with colleagues if I don't want to. I'm now wfh full time which is great. I'm a clinical coder in the NHS.

Smarshian · 06/01/2021 19:17

I’m a civil servant, I’m working in policy, currently eu exit and COVID so really fast paced. I absolutely love it, although it is very pressured at times.

HellsAngel81 · 06/01/2021 19:19

I'm a veterinary nurse and love my job 98% of the time. I've been in this profession ever since I left school and really can't imagine doing anything else. My only real gripe is the pay, but this has slowly improved over the years (the veterinary profession - especially veterinary nursing - is notoriously badly paid Sad).

hennipenni · 06/01/2021 19:25

Absolutely love my job, I have a fantastic work family, love helping people and get to drive an ambulance 😍

Changeythenamey · 06/01/2021 19:26

I’m a solicitor and the stress is often debilitating. As far as being a solicitor goes, my current role is very good and offers lots of interesting work but it’s extremely stressful and demanding and I often wish I could do something else.... but i don’t know what I could do with the same earning potential. I’m not sure if the cash is worth the stress.

technosausage · 06/01/2021 19:28

I'm a forest school practitioner, I work as part of a co-op with some amazing people. We run forest school sessions for children who don't fit into the schooling system and groups for adults with mental health issues and recovering addicts. My work is 100% outdoors and really tough in the winter months but I wouldn't change it for the world Grin

hopewardrobe · 06/01/2021 19:45

Speech and Language Therapist in an adult community neuro team. Love my job. It's hard, especially at the moment but the relationships I build with patients and the progress I see is extremely rewarding

Iamthewombat · 06/01/2021 19:48

During lockdown.. No! Before lockdown happened... still no

No.I am good at what I do and I work with some amazing colleagues but the management team above me is absolutely fucking useless. At least a third of the entire team will look to leave when pandemic restrictions are over solely because of management incompetence.

Did either of you actually read the OP’s post? She asked a question, which was, if you love your job, what is it?

Or, did you just read the title and think, hurray, here is a chance to vent my spleen to strangers! I won’t even bother reading the OP. No. I’ll just jump in and whine about my job. Who cares about the OP?

ivfbabymomma1 · 06/01/2021 19:56

Depends what day you ask me 😂 but it's maybe a 51/49 ratio of yes. I don't want to leave so does that count? (Accounts assistant part time)

Dumbo18 · 06/01/2021 20:47

@Iamthewombat ever heard of someone making a little joke? Calm yourself down

quirkyquails · 06/01/2021 20:52

I teach and yes, I love my job.

Friendswithwhenifits · 06/01/2021 20:59

Yes I really enjoy the work that I do. Mind you, I seem to enjoy most things these days. I think there has been a shift to making the most of everything and focusing on the bits I enjoy which carries over whether I’m out or about or at home.

Iamthewombat · 06/01/2021 21:03

Iamthewombat ever heard of someone making a little joke? Calm yourself down

Is hijacking somebody else’s thread what passes for a joke? Make better jokes. The OP asked people who like their jobs to tell her what they did. You could have moved on if you didn’t have anything useful to say. Do you hijack other threads with your ‘little jokes’?
