Five years ago I took a career break from an increasingly demanding role. My DH's business was starting to do well and by cutting back we've managed ok, and it's been lovely, after years in a stressful work environment, to spend time raising our DCs.

The DCs are becoming increasingly independent and it's now making sense for me to go back to work. I'd really like a different direction from my original career and have good transferable skills, but when I think back to the various roles I've had, I can't think of one that I could say I really enjoyed. It was just something I could do to the required standard that paid the bills and enabled the time not at work to be enjoyable. None were what I would call fulfilling (although quite well paid).

I thought most people's jobs were the same, but I've been very inspired by another thread on here where so many people are saying how fulfilled they are by their work. I'd just like to know, if you love your job, what do you do?

I would love my job which is head of sales and marketing in a small (

pitterpatterrain · 05/01/2021 15:03

I love my job - work in consulting and although it can be intense, the hours long and prior to Covid lots of travel I wouldn’t swop it

The people in the company make a big difference - great culture

I love my job. I work for an IT Managed Servjce Provider. Essentially we provide IT systems and support to other companies. A lot are household names. I'm a Service Delivery Manager and I'm responsible for ensuring we deliver the service inline with the contract and their requirements. My job consists of looking at the previous months servjce and seeing what we did well and what we could improve on and being a point of escalation for the Customer if things go wrong. I look after around 10 different customers and no day is ever the same. I work from home and in normal times would visit the customer once a month so I get out and about a lot. You don't even need a good knowledge of IT, just be good at relationships

I hate my job that I will be returning to after maternity leave as it is so bloody boring, but I really love the company that I work for and I will never leave unless I am forced to through redundancy or I win the lottery. Thankfully there are lots of opportunities for progression upwards or into different careers within the office so I am hopeful that I will find something I can really enjoy doing soon🤞🏻

I've only just RTFT and it's so inspiring - thanks for your replies - I feel like my horizons have increased exponentially!

@1FootInTheRave
I agree completely. I've been a midwife for 20 years and I am looking for a way out this year.

I've decided to go for a complete change of career - I have no idea what I will do. It'll depend on who will employ me!

SummerWhisper · 06/01/2021 00:43

I love my job. I'm a people person; I work in HR and I love solving problems and conducting investigations (I fantasise about being a detective). I also fantasise that I'm a MMA black belt who takes bullying managers into the car park and gives them what for.

Ploughingthrough · 06/01/2021 00:51

I'm a secondary school teacher and I like it! I like my subject and I like teenagers, although like any professional job it can be challenging. I enjoy the pastoral side of the job such as having a tutor group. I only stopped enjoying it when I took Head of Department responsibility, there are lots of reasons why I don't enjoy this. But just teaching, yeah it's a good job and I like it at the moment.

Itawapuddytat · 06/01/2021 01:02

Interpreter. I love my job. Every single day.

AutumnColours9 · 06/01/2021 01:03

I love my job. I am an NHS therapist. There are many opportunities from mental health to physical disabilities. It can be mentally challenging and stressful (hard to see people suffering but there is also great overcoming of diversity) but I just enjoy trying to help people and it is so rewarding. I would do I also if I won the lottery. Part time! The pay is average but you can progress up the bands to good pay.

Leannethom85 · 06/01/2021 01:09

Dislike my job, due to be told what to do by younger women or made out that I'm lesser than those that are uni trained, to be told who is trained and who isnt.. Half the time I think they talk through their arse.

crowsfeet57 · 06/01/2021 01:38

Hell no! I hate hate hate my job!

Emmivee · 06/01/2021 02:23

Love my job. I’m a community staff nurse. Obviously really challenging at the moment but I honestly feel like we make a difference. Do wish people would stop asking when I’m getting promoted to the hospital though!

Aldilogue · 06/01/2021 06:25

I like my job. I used to be a HCA in a care home but the pay and the expectations on staff were ridiculous so I studied to become a nurse and now work in a surgical ward in a private hospital. Mainly orthopedics, urology and gastric sleeve recovery. Its very interesting and nearly all patients are easy to work with, We have a great team on the ward as well which really helps how much I like it.

Foreverlexicon · 06/01/2021 07:32

Police officer. Mostly enjoy it, occasionally hate it, sometimes love it.

I’m front line response at the moment. I’ve been put forward for the fast track promotion scheme which I’m going to apply for on the view that the salary and hours would significantly improve my work/home balance and home life. However, if I don’t get it, I will go down the detective route which I would absolutely love.

OhWhyNot · 06/01/2021 07:41

Yes I love my job

Management in forensic mh. It’s great to see the progression, everyday is different. Always busy and work is interesting and challenging

But I have found this past year utterly exhausting the expectation to do way beyond my role, the constant adding to my role I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t love the job so much

JustRemembering · 06/01/2021 07:47

I'm in L&D bod and I really enjoy it. I write, present and manage a suite of trainings our company provides for other professionals.

TarnishedSilver · 06/01/2021 09:01

Was a SAHM for 14 years then I started to help dh run his new business and I've become increasingly involved and I really enjoy it - never enjoyed working before I had kids but dh is so bloody good at what he does, he has massive confidence in me and is really supportive...he has created a really good environment to work in, not just for me but all the people he works with - I think that's what I probably enjoy most.

JanuaryJonez · 06/01/2021 12:15

@AutumnColours9 your post really stood out and it's something I'd be interested in pursuing.

Can you point me in the direction of a website where I can get more detail from?

Police detective. Both love and hate my job. Can’t imagine doing anything else though.

BunnyBoilerRhian · 06/01/2021 12:21

Cabin and ground crew for airlines.
Best jobs I've ever had. Love love love. I love people though and love the fact that every day throws up something new. A week rarely goes by without a wtf moment and i love that.
Pay is shite and you have to learn accordingly but I believe if you need to get up every day and do something you may as well love it.
I was in my late 30s when I transferred from stick pins in my eyes boredom working in financial services to this.
I've never looked back until Covid killed the industry. I intend to return when aviation starts to recover. No job compares for me.
I'm grieve for my old job everyday.

Starseeking · 06/01/2021 12:28

I a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor working in industry, and I love my job. I've always enjoyed working with numbers, but this particular role I love so much largely due to both my boss and my team; I was doing a similar job elsewhere, and hated it due to the bullying atmosphere. I might stay here forever!

Littlefrog99 · 06/01/2021 13:37

Until having my 2nd DC almost 2 years ago I worked as an executive PA. It sounds more fancy than it was, I was a secretary for people with important jobs and I worked long hours with great stress. I did enjoy it but with 2 DC under 3 I really didn't want to go back to that so I applied for a part time job in a small supermarket. I love it. There's no stress, no taking work home, loads of friendly chats with colleagues and customers. The drop in salary is the only downside. I might look for something more challenging in the future but for now I've got everything I need.

JanuaryJonez · 06/01/2021 14:11

@BunnyBoilerRhian that resonated with me as one of the most enjoyable jobs I've ever had was as a full-time waitress before I started my main career.

It was in the late-90s in a very trendy, newly opened restaurant in the city-centre. The manager interviewed about 20 people for one role and I don't think, looking back, I've ever been so excited to be offered a job!

I was there for two years and loved almost every minute of it. I just loved chatting to customers and staff and just working in an environment where everyone is generally having a really good time in a busy and beautiful setting. The pay was good too as the tips were so generous back then (and not unfairly 'part of the salary' and included in the bill like they are now).

I'm too old for it now, but if I could find a role that captured just a quarter of that atmosphere I'd be happy.
