Lights until Candlemas

MisterT373 · 04/01/2021 22:13

Most people are familiar with the fact that Christmas decorations are usual taken down on Epiphany/12th Night.

There are parts of Europe where decorations stay up until Candlemas (2nd February)

Given today's lockdown news how would people feel about leaving up their outdoor lights until Candlemas. Everywhere looks better with lights and this would reduce the gloom through January.

Our tree will go down, purely out of practial reasons, tonight.

But I am already thinking of convincing DD to keep the outside lights and looking up fairy lights for indoors as well now.

SunKeepsShining · 05/01/2021 13:10

@contrmary

It's daft to leave them up beyond January 1st, or the new year bank holiday if the 1st is at the weekend (Scots are allowed the extra day of course).

It is bad luck to leave them up beyond the 6th though, rather than just foolish. There are only a certain number of days in one's lifetime that you can have Christmas decorations up, it's silly to waste them by leaving them all up in January.

Are you saying that I only have say 100 days of Christmas decorations up and I can either die in 2 years having them up for 50 or love for ever just one day a year?

It’s not daft, we’re keeping outside decorations up until candlemas this year.

My tree only went up on the 22. December. Before that we had the Advent candles.

Outside lights are not counted as they are - for me - vital to survive the dark days.

So, I am more then entitled to keep my tree and its candles (real ones) up until I feel I am ok to take them down.

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 05/01/2021 22:16

We have taken most of our decorations down, and outside lights, but after hearing a discussion on radio today about keeping decorations up until Candlemas (2nd Feb) we have decided to keep our tree, lit garland over the fireplace and the one up the staircase up until Candlemas. We have our twig lights back in the lounge windows so they look quite pretty. I hate it when the tree and lights come down so was delighted when DS asked what I thought about leaving them up 😁

VetiverAndLavender · 05/01/2021 22:38

I try to only "believe" in superstitions that have a positive spin. Life's tough enough without believing in negative nonsense!

wowfudge · 05/01/2021 22:41

I'm leaving our lights and a lantern outside up for just this. We need some cheer.

happymummy12345 · 05/01/2021 22:43

I'm superstitious so I always take them down on the 6th January. Seriously don't want to take them down tomorrow though.

Don’t be so ridiculous, the Queen keeps hers up until candlemass, it’s only a modern invention to take them down as soon as Christmas lunch is finished.
ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 05/01/2021 22:53

Also Nigella seems to have fairy lights all year round. I must admit to loving fairy lights in summer outside, parasol lights etc, they really don’t have to be just for Christmas, there are tons available online that are not particularly Christmassy, there are some for every occasion, valentines, Easter etc, very pretty.

MasterBruceBalloon · 05/01/2021 23:05

When we have had an artificial tree, we have kept it up until Candlemas. This year we have a real tree and will be taking it down after Epiphany on Thursday (we can't really stretch it to Candlemas, its beginning to droop). We will keep our crib and lights up until Candlemas though.

Pagan101 · 06/01/2021 00:18

I have lights up all year round anyway, every room has fairy lights because I love them. This is the first year I've had a real tree and it's far too lovely to just put outside, so it's staying up until I'm ready to let it go. I'm a pagan so the ancient ways appeal to me, I just never considered candiemas before. This year more than any other January will be bleak, so why not keep as much cheer in the house as possible.

Changi · 06/01/2021 09:29

Ours is a real tree but it hasn't been up that long so I'm hoping it will last.

Absolute nonsense
EnglishRose1320 · 06/01/2021 09:35

If it was just me I'd have lights up all year. However ds1 is autistic and has very rigid rules, Christmas can be celebrated December 1st until 12th night and that's it.
If everyone around me decides to keep outside lights up he will become a total recluse and refuse to leave the house. It was a nightmare getting him to school in November, he couldn't go on the bus and I had to take him through the back lanes to avoid as many lights as possible, so on a purely selfish note I really hope all lights are gone soon but I can totally understand why people would want to keep them up so I may just have to black out my car windows!

zukiecat · 06/01/2021 11:59

DD wanted to take our tree down on Sunday, so we did.

I didn't want to, wish I'd kept it up now til Imbolc which is February 2nd.

Having said that, it's both mine and DD's birthday in January so we both have something to look forward to.

happymummy12345 · 06/01/2021 14:53

@contrmary so based on that all the people who put them up the beginning or middle of November last year were daft as well? Surely if it's daft to have them up all January it was also daft to have them up all November?

Viviennemary · 06/01/2021 14:57

Thank goodness most people see sense and took the decorations down. Bad enough putting them up far too ealy and it's now taking them down late. Grrr.

greeneyedlulu · 06/01/2021 15:08

I was going to take down all the decorations today but we have decided to have another Xmas lunch on Sunday as my father couldn't join us for the real thing due to covid and I happened to mention I saw frozen turkeys whilst food shopping yesterday! I'd happily keep the lights up longer as its so miserable and dark now!

MisterT373 · 06/01/2021 16:51

"The tradition that it is bad luck to keep decorations up after Twelfth Night and the Epiphany is a modern invention, although it may derive from the medieval notion that decorations left up after Candlemas eve would become possessed by goblins."

To be honest I'm probably up for a dust up with a goblin.

Pagan101 · 06/01/2021 18:53

@MisterT373 I think for those of us who've dealt with toddlers and teenagers, taking on a couple of goblins will be a doddle Grin

splishsplashsploosh · 06/01/2021 18:57

We're going to keep ours up, but might take the tree down before Candlemas. I think it's a lovely idea.

littlepattilou · 06/01/2021 19:22

@MisterT373 I heard about this yesterday, but we took all our decorations and lights and tree down on Sunday (3rd.) We had had them up since 21st November, (as did most people in our street,) so we were happy to take them down after 6 weeks.

We had a lot of lights up (outside, and a few inside,) and quite a few decorations, and our tree took us a couple of hours to decorate, as it's big, and has lots of decorations. So no way would we be putting everything back up!

What's more, the tree/decorations/lights have always come down by the epiphany (today - 6th January,) so I am not about to change it now.

That said, we do have 3 or 4 sets of battery fairy lights kicking about. So I may consider popping them on for 2 or 3 hours a night til February 2nd. Smile But even next Christmas, we won't keep the vast majority of decorations and lights up any longer than the first week in January...

I suppose there's no harm in keeping them up til February 2nd if you want to though... Christmas has been ever-evolving for many years, and as someone said upthread, many people put them up in late November now, when back in 'days of yore' many people didn't put them up til Christmas Eve.

In fact, if my memory serves me well, when I was a small child, ours never went up til 24th December. Us kids would get up at 9am or so, and the tree and decorations (crepe paper streamers and balloons,) would be up! Grin

And we had those lovely fairy lights with little lampshades. And the fragile and breakable baubles! Smile

Great idea .
My real tree did not go up u til the 21st and still looks really fresh so I decided yesterday it had to stay up. Cnnot see it lasting until Candlemass though.
I have always observed 12th night, well lets say the tree lights never got switched on again, the tree might have eventually gone out when I had the energy.
All decorations are still up infact and all lights outside will remain on.

VestaTilley · 06/01/2021 20:52

Lots of people do leave a candle or lights up until Candlemas - someone who follows me on Instagram was leaving her wreath up until then.

I’m a bit too steeped in the “it’s unlucky” culture to do it, but it is Christmastide/Epiphanytide until then, so no reason not to.
