Lights until Candlemas

MisterT373 · 04/01/2021 22:13

Most people are familiar with the fact that Christmas decorations are usual taken down on Epiphany/12th Night.

There are parts of Europe where decorations stay up until Candlemas (2nd February)

Given today's lockdown news how would people feel about leaving up their outdoor lights until Candlemas. Everywhere looks better with lights and this would reduce the gloom through January.

Imagine the environmental impact of the entire world did that Sad

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 05/01/2021 00:08

I'll take the tree down tomorrow as usual, but might put the lights in DSs bedroom window instead.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/01/2021 00:12

I was toying with keeping ours up too.
Really not in the mood to take them down this week. The world is already too grim and dark.

WeatherwaxOn · 05/01/2021 00:14

Suits me, I like fairy lights. Tree is still up anyway.

Nat6999 · 05/01/2021 00:35

Ours were down new year's eve, January is a sad month for us, anniversaries of losing my auntie 5th, my Grandad 12th, my Uncle 13th, my Dad 17th & my partner on ds birthday 26th.

NannyGythaOgg · 05/01/2021 00:51

I have decided my lights are winter decorations and are staying up until the clocks change. Tinsel and Christmas specific decs will be down tomorrow but my tree - which is a living one outside on my patio and in view from the lounge - is staying until March; as are a few coloured lights that I love.

It's pretty normal for nativity scenes to stay up churches until Candlemas.

Yesterday my husband was trying to persuade me to keep the tree up. Our decorations went up very late this year.

My soul is ancient (and I witch I think...), I worry about bad luck Confused but I have decided that lights i have in my dining room are staying up all year and next Christmas we’ll decorate around them. They’re pretty and comforting and I’ll pass them off as hygge Smile

PerfidiousAlbion · 05/01/2021 10:12

I always leave some warm white lights on the mantlepiece, together with holly and ivy as a dining table centrepiece. I think it's nice to dress the house for winter, especially now. Lots of candles (real and fake) dotted around too.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who does this.

CounsellorTroi · 05/01/2021 10:17

I think it’s a nice idea. I have a prelit twig tree on my hall table that I hung a few baubles on but I think I will just take the baubles off and leave it up for the rest of the winter.

InconvenientPeg · 05/01/2021 11:33

I'm usually ready for my decorations to come down on 12th night, but I'm not this year. Plus we bought new lights and are using those instead of the central light which is much nicer, so they might stay permanently!

annevonkleve · 05/01/2021 11:42

Why not, it makes towns looks much less dull and dark in the winter.

contrmary · 05/01/2021 11:43

It's daft to leave them up beyond January 1st, or the new year bank holiday if the 1st is at the weekend (Scots are allowed the extra day of course).

It is bad luck to leave them up beyond the 6th though, rather than just foolish. There are only a certain number of days in one's lifetime that you can have Christmas decorations up, it's silly to waste them by leaving them all up in January.

PerkingFaintly · 05/01/2021 11:46

What a lovely idea!

I think it's daft to put them up any earlier than 20th Dec ish, but plenty of people do it. Each to their own and all that Hmm

If you are worried about luck, if they are not down by the 6th, they have to stay up until Candlemas.

Annasgirl · 05/01/2021 11:49

I'm taking my trees (indoors) down but leaving all external lights up and some internal, until February. I had decided to do this as I find January bleak at the best of times and usually leave my staircase fairy lights up until Easter!!!

Unfortunately most of my neighbours have spent the past three days taking theirs down - which I find sad. And also - who takes them down before the 12th night????!!!

It's tradition to leave them up until 12 nights/at least 5th January and more ancient traditions say to keep them up to Candlemas.

It's a relatively modern thing to put them up in early December and take them down at New Year but January is such a long, dark month.

Lovely1a2b3c · 05/01/2021 11:51

** 12th Night (typo)
The 12 days of Christmas are from 25th December (1st day of Christmas) to 5th January (12th day of Christmas).
25th

Peach1886 · 05/01/2021 11:55

Our tree is now back outside and the decorations will be down by the 6th but I have just treated myself to some new lights in the sales so they will be "winter lights" and going up as soon as they arrive, and I'm also lighting candles each evening as soon as it gets dark (and sometimes earlier in the afternoons if it's gloomy).

We need all the cheer we can find atm Gin!

Vicliz24 · 05/01/2021 11:56

I've put my fairy lights in a vase to keep on my coffee table and will switch them on every afternoon to keep my spirits up

CovidCarol · 05/01/2021 12:05

I'd love it if everyone did this. January is always so dull let alone this Lockdown one.
I believe the Queen leaves her decs up till February, I suppose that's why.

Hopeishere52 · 05/01/2021 12:18

I’ve taken my tree and decorations down, but have put a warm lantern light in the bay window which is very welcoming and I am leaving my coloured lights I have up in the kitchen, which lift my spirits as it’s so dark and dreary in the evening and non of my usual solar lights in the garden are lighting up.

OhToBeASeahorse · 05/01/2021 12:54

Everything is still up in my house. This is al such a shit show anything for some jollity is staying, especially if it doesn't contribute to the size of my thighs

DelphineWalsh · 05/01/2021 12:56

We have lights up all year round
