To wonder who is buying these for £30 each?

Browsing Etsy just because, and came across this seller selling teeny, miniature crochet animals - measuring 3mms each.

They are adorable and the detail is very good, but £30 for something that’s falling down the sofa or getting hoovered up? Just why?

Good on the seller for finding an effective way at to make money but who in the world is buying them and what are you supposed to do with them? You can’t even just sit and look at them without holding them a few inches in front of your face.

Anyone here a secret buyer and want to shed some light on this?

People who want one and are willing to pay £30 obviously

picklemewalnuts · 04/01/2021 15:57

People who want to populate doll houses...

People who... erm...

People who like buying stuff.

MaelyssQ · 04/01/2021 15:57

Are they for dolls houses?

SnorkMaidensTummy · 04/01/2021 15:57

Have you seen Willard Wigan's micro sculptures? They're fantastic but on another level.

Turnedouttoes · 04/01/2021 15:58

My MIL would love one of those. She’s a hoarder and just loves to buy things

Plonque · 04/01/2021 15:59

I think that definitely comes under "more money than sense"

TrialOfStyle · 04/01/2021 15:59

I think they would be too small for dolls houses, wouldn’t they? I suppose I could probably build a miniature zoo in my glasses case though to fit them in.

I’ve just had a look - wow! They really are something else. Very impressive.

They're for small scale
Search 1:144th scale on Etsy.

These are collectors items, not for kids.

Bouncebacker · 04/01/2021 16:06

@VettiyaIruken small scale what though? Obviously not for kids - but what would a collector do with them?

VettiyaIruken · 04/01/2021 16:11

Place them in a project. You buy a 1:144th scale house kit, or finished but unfurnished house and buy furniture etc separately. Have a look on 1:144th results on Etsy.

1forAll74 · 04/01/2021 16:11

My cats would try to play with them, or maybe try to eat them.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 04/01/2021 16:13

Presumably they're for people with a magnifying glass. I imagine there are people out there who really enjoy magnifying things, given how much fun it is to look at things under a microscope.
Also presumably you're paying for the complexity/craftsmanship of making something that small.

CrochetBug · 04/01/2021 16:13

If you don't think these are worth £30 then you clearly have no idea how much work goes into them!

GavsCloakOfInvisibility · 04/01/2021 16:15

One of our Guided Reading books at school is about Willard Wigan - the children always love that one. He's incredibly talented.

As for the OP's crocheted animals - I would 100% lose it within about 5 minutes.

rslsys · 04/01/2021 16:17

Why do people get on their high horses about being paid minimum wage and then assume that people who knit, crochet or sew are only worth 50p/hour?

TrialOfStyle · 04/01/2021 16:18

I didn’t say I don’t think they are worth £30 - I’m asking who would spend £30 on them. As lovely as they are, I can only envision them ending up under the sofa.

OP posts:
RaspberryCoulis · 04/01/2021 16:19

My goodness. That's quite some skill involved in making that.

Diverseduvet · 04/01/2021 16:24

I think they are curiosity pieces, which can give enjoyment as people look at them and admire the skill involved. They're pretty amazing but I couldn't justify spending £30 on one!

BertieBotts · 04/01/2021 16:26

I love it! I wish I was disciplined enough to have a teeny tiny display cabinet for this kind of thing :o

CrochetBug · 04/01/2021 16:27

Im seriously tempted to try and make some Grin
I have embroidery silk and tiny hooks. Just need to dig my magnifying lamp out the cupboard

TrialOfStyle · 04/01/2021 16:29

The seller also sells the patterns for £3-£4 so I could imagine it would be an interesting thing to try (for those that aren’t all thumbs).

They wouldn't. They'd be glued into place on a tiny tiny bed. Or used as part of a craft project.
ReeseWitherfork · 04/01/2021 16:32

I don’t think the question is why someone is selling them for £30 but why someone would buy them for £30.

Looking up the 1:144th thing on Etsy raises more questions than it answers. What does one do with a tiny house model? And is every element this expensive? And I’m assuming it’s not just houses else why would this person be making turtles and penguins?
