To wonder who is buying these for £30 each?

Browsing Etsy just because, and came across this seller selling teeny, miniature crochet animals - measuring 3mms each.

They are adorable and the detail is very good, but £30 for something that’s falling down the sofa or getting hoovered up? Just why?

Good on the seller for finding an effective way at to make money but who in the world is buying them and what are you supposed to do with them? You can’t even just sit and look at them without holding them a few inches in front of your face.

Anyone here a secret buyer and want to shed some light on this?

We bought one for our godson, he loves turtles and has it in a magnified box. It's pricey but intricate. You'd pay the same for large scale art that had half as much effort put in.

VettiyaIruken · 04/01/2021 16:35

Oh people who collect that scale are really obsessive! Entire shelves or in some cases a room! For their collection.

It's worth it to them because it's what they love. And it's very addictive. 😁

Giggorata · 04/01/2021 16:37

No, not just houses, you could have dioramas, with tiny trees and things.

ZoeTurtle · 04/01/2021 16:38

I have a friend who makes furniture for tiny doll's houses. Not sure if it's 1:144 or a bit bigger but I'm endlessly awed by her skill. I would start a tiny house if I had loads of spare cash, because looking at the things would bring me joy.

bridgetreilly · 04/01/2021 16:41

I would, but they would not go near the sofa. They go in a display, safe from prying hands and hoovers.

GingerNorthernLass · 04/01/2021 16:45

Minimalists who still want to burn cash?

jessstan1 · 04/01/2021 16:45

Presumably you are supposed to sew them on to something. Very expensive though.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/01/2021 16:45

@VettiyaIruken are you a collector? I googled some pics and i have to say that the skill going into all that is incredibly impressive!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/01/2021 16:50

Unfortunately still too big to use with 'N' scale model railway. Wink

Kumquatsquash · 04/01/2021 16:50

Etsy is for handmade items, so people are willing to pay extra for all the time, skill, dedication, care and effort artists put into their work (although mass produced shit still finds its way onto there). It's not to my taste but I pay silly money for plants and Tibetan singing bowels so horses for courses.

Kumquatsquash · 04/01/2021 16:52

Bowls, not bowels! That would certainly be a niche market 😂

Labobo · 04/01/2021 16:52

I met Willard Wigan once. Took DC into a tiny gallery exhibiting a few of his works for about five minutes while we waited for a bus in the rain. He came out of a room at the back and tried to charge us £££. I apologised and said we'd been round a few local galleries that were free entry and so assumed this was too. We were about to catch a bus so wouldn't be staying. He got very angry. Put me off his work, though it is very impressive. And I do appreciate artists need to eat, but we were in and out in five minutes and there were no signs on the door saying it was a paying exhibition.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 04/01/2021 16:53

I'd be terrified of accidentally inhaling it

Sacredspace · 04/01/2021 16:57

Did you see the mini silicone babies?

Enko · 04/01/2021 16:58

I doubt that is an easy way to make money. If the seller is making them themselves that is several hours work IMO

DianaT1969 · 04/01/2021 16:58

You could probably make these cheaply with a 3D printer, but I'm not sure what substrate would be nice. Definitely not plastic.

ravenmum · 04/01/2021 16:58

They have a cherry stone carved with more than a hundred little heads in our local museum. They are too small to see properly with the naked eye, so are displayed in a cabinet with a magnifying glass in front of them. Have survived more than 400 years without getting lost behind a sofa. skd-online-collection.skd.museum/Details/Index/117609

That first picture with the house in the globe in incredible.

I can’t even image the concentration, patience and steadiness you’d have to have to create that.

Do you collect anything OP? Because of so any one is could say “you spend money on THAT?!” “I couldn’t imagine wasting my money on xxx”
Just because you couldn’t imagine spending money on it, doesn’t mean there is no market for it.

wildraisins · 04/01/2021 17:03

Well I suppose someone admires the craftsmanship and skill that was put into making it? Why does anyone buy anything? It is a work of art albeit a very small one. I can imaging there is someone out there who appreciates this.

£30 for the amount of time that probably went into this is not all that much. If it took 3 hours to make then it's not much more than minimum wage when you take out materials cost.

Antonin · 04/01/2021 17:03

Making miniatures is one of my hobbies and fellow club members are as fascinated as I am by tiny things. Not many people attempt 1/144 but there is great interest in 1/48 (one quarter inch to the foot). The fun for us is in making and collecting is secondary. Not so many people seem to go for the classic 1/12 scale which takes up so much room. I would be tempted to buy these exquisite pieces if I had unlimited funds, to accessorise the little 1/144 house I would build. My hands are not sure enough now to attempt really small stuff.
Anyone interested in the hobby can find details of local clubs via the Dolls House and Miniatures magazine. Our club is using zoom atm. It need not cost a lot if you make your own accessories and you don’t need a house as constructing a scene in a room box can be very satisfying.

Well quite.... and that is why it has value.

ravenmum · 04/01/2021 17:08

My dad has made a living for the last 50 years out of O scale railways. People pay hundreds of pounds to have their rolling stock painted by a pro.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 04/01/2021 17:09

@CrochetBug

Im seriously tempted to try and make some Grin I have embroidery silk and tiny hooks. Just need to dig my magnifying lamp out the cupboard
I tried this, it’s more machine sewing weight. I couldn’t see a blinking thing. I do use embroidery thread to crochet with though, not that small though.
Rhayader · 04/01/2021 17:13

My sister drunk ordered loads of guinea pig ones of these 🤣
