To ask why people vote for trump

Yabuok · 04/01/2021 14:03

Although it is looking like trump has lost why did so many people vote for him. I won’t pretend that the uk is somehow better or we would never vote for him as we basically have already... but what is the appeal why do people follow him?

Trump lost the election

Perhaps they prefer him to Creepy Old Joe as Bilden is called, who can't keep his hands off women and children.

Cam2020 · 04/01/2021 14:31
  • Because their lives are shit and he came along promising better things.
  • For a stable economy *mistrust of mainstream politicians and thier promises (ties in with the first point)

I love the way the faux left types mock working class people for their lack of education and have such little empathy they can't imagine why they might do the things they do. How Liberal of them!

gwenneh · 04/01/2021 14:33

Correct. Trump lost the election. There is no outstanding litigation or "tactic" that will overturn that, and the only reason the theatre has been continued is so the donations keep rolling in. They have amassed quite a lot.

People voted for him because they wanted their interests represented and they felt he did so. He also tapped into a deep seated American tribalism. Never mind that very little of what he promised came to pass, to his supporters, success is just around the corner and if "the Libs" would just stop opposing them, the promised land would be theirs.

Look, I'm not going to defend Biden as I don't think he was the best candidate by a long damn shot. However, how people can say this when his opposition was Trump is beyond me. Trump, who has multiple allegations against him, and said he would date his own daughter as a start. It's like arguing that people would rather vote for dog shit, because cat shit can really stink Hmm.
satnighttakeaway · 04/01/2021 14:41

Do you mean why did they vote for him?

Strange thing to be asking as it's weeks since anyone cast a vote for any candidate in the US election Confused

cosmicpotato · 04/01/2021 14:46

For the same reason people voted for Biden.

I don't mock the working class in the US. I do acknowledge the terrible state of education in the US as a whole which impacts poorer sections of society the most.

Agreed and the only reason certain Republicans like Ted Cruz and his ilk look like they are trying to overthrow the election is because they want to appeal to Trump's base, which is unfortunately still powerful due to their numbers. I don't think any of the senators believe they can or should change the election results. They are just kissing Trump's arse and hoping his supporters will support them likewise.

It's a cynical, selfish and greedy move which will undermine faith in democracy and therefore democracy itself. They don't care about that, only themselves.

MissConductUS · 04/01/2021 14:56

Yank here. They either voted for him because they liked his ideology of lower taxes, less regulation, tighter immigration restrictions, etc. (and somehow managed to ignore what a complete jackass he is) or because they dislike the political agenda of the left and far left. I think the two cohorts are about equal.

Pretty simple actually.

Have I wandered into 2016? Why are you asking this after he's been (roundly and definitively and legally) voted out and have you not thought or read about why people voted for him before now?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/01/2021 15:06

Shouldn’t have enabled voting

That's just what Trump is thinking now! Grin

Nothing I just keep being questioned so I wanted to clarify

you wanted to clarify by pretending you didn't say what you said, and then saying even more daft things?

Like many countries the relatively well off have a decent education. Poorer states and populations are impacted much more by underfunding of the educations system.

Generally speaking I think every child, in every country needs to be taught critical thinking as part of the core curriculum. It's one way to help combat radicalism and conspiracy theories.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 04/01/2021 15:19

I have family over there and it looks like a fair number of people just held their noses and voted - some live in areas where there was riots and protests, and in areas which are pretty Wokesville (and the social mess that has been created as a result).

Devil and the deep blue sea.

Crankley · 04/01/2021 15:26

Brumboo I'm aware of Trump and women and personally would have voted none of the above but I've never seen him do this: www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10222373457303865

There's also this: www.businessinsider.com/joe-biden-allegations-women-2020-campaign-2019-6?r=US&IR=T

BrumBoo · 04/01/2021 15:34

@Crankley, what JB has been accused of doing doesn't better what Trump is accused of doing. They're both awful accusations, quite honestly I'm not sure of what value it brings to this particular discussion. The question is why people would vote for Trump, to say 'keep out creepy Joe Biden' is hypocritical and irrelevant since Biden won. Again, there's no defence of either here, just pointing out that 'Biden is a creep' is literally the most pointless comeback when the opposition is Trump.

contrmary · 04/01/2021 15:36

People voted for him because (rightly or wrongly) they consider the alternatives to be worse. In the case of Trump, he has supporters who believed that the multiple loser Biden and his "PC choice" vice president would be worse than Trump. Which we'll have to wait and see - Trump's the first president in a long time not to start/join a war, so it will be interesting to see if Biden can follow that.

The "he's shit but the other guy's even shitter" argument applies to UK elections too. Johnson got in because Corbyn was terrible, the SNP get in because their brand of Braveheart politics plays better than actual facts.

Mittens030869 · 04/01/2021 15:44

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that there have been over 300,000 deaths from COVID-19. Trump has wilfully encouraged supporters not to wear masks at his rallies and to break social distancing rules. These events have proved to be super spreaders of the virus as well.

Biden has promised to focus his efforts into beating the pandemic, so he’s been given the opportunity to do so.

Ladyks · 04/01/2021 15:51

Personally, I don’t believe that Biden got more votes than Obama, and more than any candidate in history. No chance from a candidate that didn’t campaign & spent a large amount of time in his basement. More people don’t hate Trump than they loved Obama. Not saying Biden didn’t win, but 80 million+ votes?? I can see why people question it.

gwenneh · 04/01/2021 15:54

Personally, I don’t believe that Biden got more votes than Obama, and more than any candidate in history.

The expansions of postal voting more than account for this. It's much easier to walk to your mailbox with a pre-addressed, pre-paid envelope than it is to A: have to take time out and go vote in person or B: have to request the postal ballot in advance.

There's no mystery or conspiracy about it -- it was just there were fewer excuses to NOT vote.

Definitely nothing wrong with that in my option. What I object to, are those 'liberals' who seem to dislike a fair section of working class people. They don't care about their education, or lack of, but rather use that as a cudgel to batter them with and to undermine their experiences, which only disenfranchises people further. There is an element of mockery and a sneery 'you're just thick' attitude amongst some who deem themselves their beters. Not very Liberal at all to my mind.
