What do I do?

I'm in work at 7.30. Ive been diagnosed with a very severe chest infection, not covid as I've been tested 3 x and they're all negative. I've been on steroids for a week and have another 3 days to go. I'm coughing a lot still

I work in an operating theatre so would be wearing ppe, do I go to work today?

I'm in a WhatsApp group with one of the people I work with from a hobby outside worm. And they keep asking if I'm in. I don't feel well enough to go to work but the bitching and talking shit about me will be rife if I don't go in today.

My boss will ring at least 3 times, my friend on the WhatsApp will message constantly about why I'm not there. Works absence team will call later.

I've been signed off for 2 weeks but I just don't think the hassle is worth it.

If you’ve been signed off then you tell your boss you can’t come, then turn your phone off and go back to sleep. Put the WhatsApp group on mute

aleC4 · 04/01/2021 06:11

You absolutely don't go.
Your health will be at risk and so will the health of the people in theatre.
You've been signed off, you're not skiving.
And as for your 'friend', ditch her, she doesn't sound very nice.

Della1 · 04/01/2021 06:12

I wouldn’t go in. You are genuinely ill and have been signed off for two weeks. I wouldn’t worry too much about what anyone thinks- you’re not just taking the day off, you’re ill.
Why make yourself worse? I feel
Cross on your behalf that you feel worried about taking time off...it’s not right.
I
Hope you feel better soon.

changedmynameforChristmas · 04/01/2021 06:13

Isn't it awful when you are not allowed to be ill. If you have proof you are not fit to be at work, make sure someone sees it. Get well soon

HikeForward · 04/01/2021 06:14

Don’t go! You’ve been signed off. Covid tests are notorious for false negatives (maybe you missed the window for testing). If you go to work against medical advice and spread covid (or spread an infection/virus that resembles covid and puts your team into isolation) you will have breached covid policy and could end up on a disciplinary. Not worth it. Get well soon

OldAndWornOut · 04/01/2021 06:16

I'm sure your workplace is not allowed to hassle you if you're off sick.

yeramuppetharry · 04/01/2021 06:16

I forgot to add I tested positive for flu on Friday but my manager knows and said oh well ppe will keep you safe. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I hate my job

OP posts:
Mrbob · 04/01/2021 06:18

No! You can’t go into theatre when you know you have flu!!!

DigitalChristmas · 04/01/2021 06:18

If you have a doctors note to sign you off you are not covered by world insurance as you are not meant to be there. I was told I couldn’t even wfh when my sick note was active

username9768 · 04/01/2021 06:24

This is appalling. I agree make sure they have the note then switch your phone off. Any more pressure and I would be going higher up/HR.

Hollyhobbi · 04/01/2021 06:28

Did you not get the flu vaccine?

yeramuppetharry · 04/01/2021 06:29

I've called in sick. I'll have to answer when one of them rings but the pressure I have to message my friend on the WhatsApp to 'give her a heads up' I need a new job

OP posts:
yeramuppetharry · 04/01/2021 06:29

@Hollyhobbi no I did. I get it every year.

OP posts:
SpiderinaWingMirror · 04/01/2021 06:33

Huh? In what world are you required to work in an operating theatre with flu?

Divebar · 04/01/2021 06:34

Don’t go in and switch your phone to silent. Tell them you were asleep if they call - they shouldn’t be hassling you if you’re ill. Certainly not if it’s flu or a chest infection - those things knock you off your feet.

eaglejulesk · 04/01/2021 06:46

You've been signed off, you don't go in. You need to get better before you think about working, and your boss and colleagues sound awful. What sort of operating theatre thinks someone with a severe chest infection should be working - madness. I agree - you need a new job!

Oreservoir · 04/01/2021 06:53

I once returned to work early when I had a chest infection. NHS, under pressure from my manager.
Part of my lung is permanently damaged and looking back I didn't rest enough.
Stay home, turn you phone off and get well.

TheRealHousewife · 04/01/2021 06:58

@yeramuppetharry I’d definitely be switching my phone off in your situation. If you’ve followed correct procedure to inform your employers do just that. No one should be hassling you. Feeling stressed will only lengthen the duration of the flu.

Get well soon Flowers

NoDontDoIt · 04/01/2021 07:01

Dont go, mute your phone. You need time to recover; this peer pressure stress probably ain't helping!?

Cheeserton · 04/01/2021 07:12

Just to be clear, you're a medical professional 'working in operating theatres' who turns to mumsnet for medical advice?

Holly60 · 04/01/2021 07:12

Stay at home and get better, and then deal with your colleagues when you are better and have the energy. You should not be going in if you are poorly

ElfIsAnAss · 04/01/2021 07:23

I've had chest infections. Could barely breathe never mind move about to do anything let alone work! Stay home and recover or you'll make yourself worse.

SmellyPooHead · 04/01/2021 08:03

If you went anywhere near a relative of mine in an operating theatre when you had flu I'd go ballistic
You are 100% doing the right thing
Go back to bed OP, I hope you feel better soon

Friendswithwhenifits · 04/01/2021 08:12

Stay at home OP and get well soon Flowers

SimplyRadishing · 04/01/2021 08:20
