I don’t want to send 10yo did to school tomorrow

We’ve been really careful throughout the various lockdowns and in between. We sacrificed all our plans at Christmas and didn’t see relatives. DH and I work outside the home but we are both very careful about distancing and hygiene. With the best will in the world, we can’t expect a primary aged child to do the same. We rely on the other parents at the school and whether they’ve been careful over Christmas. It’s unlikely that they all have. I really don’t want to send dd into school: we’re in tier 4, the virus is rampant and I’ve read enough stories of 30- and 40-somethings being seriously affected.

It seems like madness to send dd into school tomorrow. I’ve never kept her off school for any other reason than illness or a family funeral, but I’m really in two minds over whether to send her in tomorrow. WIBU to keep her off? Looks like a lockdown’s coming anyway.

Don't send her - please don't.

dawnc27 · 03/01/2021 18:25

im not sending my 9 year old in, only tier 3 but i dont care, after seeing fb and all the mixing with local parents im going to wait a few days at least

Peasbewithyou · 03/01/2021 18:27

I feel very similarly OP! I have 2 DDs due to go in this week. The virus around here is going crazy and our county council has just declared a major incident regarding hospital capacity.

I have never kept them off for anything other than illness before but it feels insane to send them in! I don’t want COVID and I don’t want it to spread further through our family and take out yet more vulnerable people and infrastructure. What are the government doing?! Why are they not closing schools to all but key workers and vulnerable children?

Hankunamatata · 03/01/2021 18:28

If you dont want to then dont. I believe each family should be given a choice to stay at home or go to school. And parents not to be criticized for the choice they make as every family is unique

CircusMistress · 03/01/2021 18:29

You sound like an echo of my thoughts. Had a chat with my 9 year old Dad earlier and we agreed not to send her in tomorrow. Like many this is the first time I've felt this strongly. I'm going to trust my gut instinct on this.

sst1234 · 03/01/2021 18:33

What do you think will happen, serious question, what are the chances of the worst happening to you or her?

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 03/01/2021 18:34

I’ve had similar conversations with exdh about our two and ultimately we decided to keep them home. We’ve never kept them off before so I feel uneasy breaking the rules but do think it’s for the best.

WonderingFree · 03/01/2021 18:37

It’s the lack of choice that we have as parents that is so out of order. Surely the threat of fines/school place being taken should be lifted now so that we can make our own choices. I personally wouldn’t send and ask for clear assurances from HT.

cyclingmad · 03/01/2021 18:38

So don't your the parent make the decision you think is right

gingercat02 · 03/01/2021 18:42

I would love to send my 12yo.back on Tuesday but I can't. Kids need to be in school

gingercat02 · 03/01/2021 18:47

And I work in the NHS for balance

Fr0thandBubble · 03/01/2021 20:52

Oh don’t be so wet.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 03/01/2021 21:01

Your child, do what you think is best. Education can be caught up on if need be.

Chocomel · 03/01/2021 21:02

I don't want to go to school tomorrow... and I'm a teacher.

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 03/01/2021 21:05

Your child your choice OP and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

We're tier 4, and we'd already made the decision not to send Dc tomorrow, we feel it's too soon after the festive mixing. As it happens our Head and Governors have taken it out of our hands and decided not to open except for vulnerable or key worker children.

My view in all this is that while our dc might drive us nuts and home schooling plus working is flipping hard, ultimately they're our responsibility. Their right to be able to learn their times tables and see their friends doesn't trump another person's right to live....and that's what it boils down to.

SueEllenMishke · 03/01/2021 21:06

What are the numbers like locally? We're in tier 4 but our numbers are very low (a lot lower than when we were put into lockdown in November) so I'm not even considering keeping DS home.

There has been a lot of scaremongering going on IMO.

B33Fr33 · 03/01/2021 21:09

No we are not. For what its worth "Fr0thandBubble" Have you anything useful to say?

NotBrigitteBardot · 03/01/2021 21:11

Hospitals are overflowing with lots of otherwise healthy under 60s in hospital, and one hospital worker reported lots of children in hospital with Covid.
Luckily our schools are closed (London)

OddshoesOddsocks · 03/01/2021 21:12

My 2 aren’t going tomorrow and the head has supported our decision. I provisionally said I’d keep them off until 18th jan but we’ll see how we get on.

I think everyone needs to do what suits their family, we have vulnerable people in our bubble and I’m currently furloughed so I have the luxury of not having to take the risk.
We’re tier 4 with high numbers of cases in dd1’s class not to mention plenty of parents who have declared a global pandemic ‘a load of rubbish’. I appreciate that I’m incredibly lucky to be in this position though, I feel for those parents who have no option.

FuckOffBorisYouTwat · 03/01/2021 21:18

@Fr0thandBubble you're right being tough will completely stop you getting covid. phew!

ShowOfHands · 03/01/2021 21:19

We're tier 4 but really low numbers. I had DS all ready to go in tomorrow but the school have messaged this evening to say they're not opening tomorrow and will let us know about the rest of the week in due course.

We've had one case in school and that was in September.

nosswith · 03/01/2021 21:19

Other parents all being careful over Christmas. No chance. YANBU to have your DD at home tomorrow.

ftm202020 · 03/01/2021 21:45

Don't send your children then.

Alys20 · 03/01/2021 21:53

YANBU at all. Do what you think is right for your family. Boris U-turn fast approaching, the useless flip-flopping gormless bastard. When is GW getting the sack.
