AIBU to complain that we as parents have to make the food for lunch at our little boy’s school?

The parents have to share the cooking duties, at our crèche/ school for 2/6 year olds. IMHO this isn’t very intelligent especially during the sanitary crisis. Starter, main and dessert. For the staff too.
On top of this, at the beginning of each half term, they reset the counter to the beginning of the alphabet, so we have ended up doing double shifts compared to those lower down in the alphabet.
To my mind the school should be doing all catering.

Starter, main course & dessert!! Seriously where is this?

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/01/2021 18:53

Parents have to take it in turns to provide snacks for the whole of the class at my goddaughter’s nursery in the US, so not entirely in weird realm; but very unreasonable that they reset the alphabet each term, and I’d definitely expect different arrangements in recognition of the current situation. What do other parents think about it?

Dahlietta · 03/01/2021 18:53

Well, it's obviously a bit bonkers, but I can't believe it's the only bonkers thing about the place.

Beamur · 03/01/2021 18:58

Never come across this at any school my DD has attended.
Presumably it's in the terms and conditions for attendance? Is there some kind of governing panel you could put alternative suggestions to?

airforsharon · 03/01/2021 19:24

One of my DDs goes to a Steiner school & once a week parents do a soup/stew lunch, but it's optional as obviously not possible for all parents to do so. Enforced rota sounds a bit much.

My dc went to nursery and school in another country. In the nursery each family had to cover two sessions per term. There were two helpers per session. My mum and I used to do it together so it was done all at once. You had to clean and prepare the lunch.

Then at school each family had to give one weekend day per year to groundskeeping. Might be painting, might be clearing the gutters.

GameSetMatch · 03/01/2021 19:25

Where’s your sons school? 1970? Parent helpers took turns when I was a girl but haven’t heard of this in 30+ years, very odd.

Redlocks28 · 03/01/2021 19:26

I presume this is a private school. Why did you choose it if you didn’t want to do things like this?!

Move schools if you hate it.

My nephew was made redundant [head chef] due to covid ~ he's currently helping in a large workplace canteen in a warehouse [it's allowed !] .

The canteen has to be thoroughly cleaned every day, they are only allowed to serve simple foods with not much preparation, so hardly any hot food, they wear masks and disposable gloves all day, have a temperature check on arrival to work.

What protection is in place at your little boy's school canteen ?

PussyCatInChristmasStockings · 03/01/2021 19:39

3 courses...for a 2yo?

lioncitygirl · 03/01/2021 19:40

This must be a Steiner school. I went to look at one and tbh - while it works for some, for the majority, it’s a little ‘out there’

WhySoSensitive · 03/01/2021 19:47

Whhaaaa?

rookgizzardpie · 03/01/2021 19:51

?!

partyatthepalace · 03/01/2021 19:51

Eh? That is WEIRD. Are you in the UK?

MichelleScarn · 03/01/2021 19:53

As its 2-6 am also with those saying outside of UK, or Steiner?

Undies1990 · 03/01/2021 19:55

Whaaaat?

NannyR · 03/01/2021 19:57

The three course thing isn't unusual in some European countries - in Luxembourg, the creche lunch menu used to sound like a restaurant menu, they had soup or salad to start every day, then a cooked main and fruit and cheese for afters.

ZOhZee · 03/01/2021 19:57

How do working parents manage this?
Or families without a 1950 style setup i.e. single parents, bereaved parents/ military kids etc?

I'm struggling to understand how this works in practical terms / logistics.

NannyR · 03/01/2021 19:57

The creche cooked and served it though, not the parents.

ItsNotGreenItsBlue · 03/01/2021 20:03

What happens if you’re a working parent? Why do the parents have to go in and make lunches? Can you opt out?

AlwaysCheddar · 03/01/2021 20:03

Surely it would break food hygiene legislation?

BigBadVoodooHat · 03/01/2021 20:04

Wonder if the OP will be back to clarify this rather bizarre set-up? Confused

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 03/01/2021 20:05

This is bonkers (mainly here for the explanation)
