To think we can find a seaside town to suit us all?

I feel I'm going around in circles trying to find a UK holiday destination both children will like. It should be easy but it isn't. Can anyone help?

  1. Needs a sandy beach with a small stream running across it (or water outlet/pipe will do!). My 15 year old son is autistic and loves to create canals and divert water and would happily spend all day doing this.

  2. Needs to be near a proper seaside town with lots of amusement arcades for my daughter. She loves places like Great Yarmouth but a little smaller would be okay.

The beach for my son and arcades for my daughter don't need to be in the same place, just within driving distance. I can Google seaside towns but I get nothing when googling "beach with stream" so hoping someone with local knowledge can help. Thank you!

Is North Wales to far for you. Barmouth sounds like it would suit.

EBathory · 02/01/2021 10:08

Dawlish in South Devon. Had the river and arcades in one place. A short train journey in either direction takes you to Teignmouth pier, skate park and lido on the see front or Dawlish Warren with more amusement arcades, go carts etc

There’s a haven resort at perranporth with tons to do as well as all of the lovely beaches previous posters have mentioned. We are 300 miles from cornwall and always travel at 4am so the traffic isn’t too bad, on the way home we wait until about 8/9pm and again this skips a lot of the traffic.

ithinkyouareveryrude · 02/01/2021 10:15

Whitby would sound right up your street.

Sandsend beach has exactly what you describe with an outlet pipe running through the middle and there's loads to do in the surrounding areas for your girl.

You will need to drive though.

Happy Holidays!

ShrikeAttack · 02/01/2021 10:19

Yes, whitby and Robin Hood's Bay would be perfect.

ODFOx · 02/01/2021 10:20

Charmouth has a little river and the added bonus of fossil hunting which my dd loved.
It's nit far along the coast from Lyme Regis.

nevernotstruggling · 02/01/2021 10:29

Teignmouth it has a pier and 2 beaches very close together plus there is a shakedown next door. It's very small and walkable everywhere

MaskingForIt · 02/01/2021 10:29

Get your son a bucket and he can create canals and fill them up himself. Or a camping water carrier with a tap.

Or get him some small balls and he can create ball runs instead:

the coast around Old Hunstanton (rock pools & cliffs) Hunstanton has funfairs a nice swimming pool & the sea life centre, the Wash is nearby with mudflats You have Sandringham (woods & gardens) some pretty villages along the coast, lots of things suitable & fun. The rock pools at Old Hunstanton would certainly be fun for making mini rivers & seeing tiny sea creatures

EmmanuelleMakro · 02/01/2021 10:37

Swanage is great but watch the tides /at high tide the beach is very small and you see people gradually moving all their stuff back up the beach... parking is a ‘mare so get there early. Lovely steam train!

EmmanuelleMakro · 02/01/2021 10:38

Isle of Wight good too good for all that plus the excitement of the ferry to get there..

zaphodbeeble · 02/01/2021 10:40

St Anne’s

DecemberSun · 02/01/2021 10:41

No arcades but Tresaith in Ceredigion has a waterfall falling onto the beach and the kids have hours of fun damming the streams that flow from it.

Fifthtimelucky · 02/01/2021 10:45

How about Bude? Probably my favourite seaside town. The beach is brilliant with masses of sand, rocks, streams, an open air pool which is refreshed by the tide

There is also an indoor swimming pool with flume and wave machine.

saffire · 02/01/2021 10:46

@redrise

Sorry, I should have mentioned location as travelling long distance with two ASD kids is difficult. We are in the South and Yorkshire is as far north as we could go. Would love to visit Cornwall but summer traffic puts me off. Thanks to those who replied though
We would travel to Cornwall from London either through the night (leaving at about 4am, arriving about 9am) or break up the journey and travel halfway and stay somewhere else overnight. Would that be an option?
nevernotstruggling · 02/01/2021 11:05

@EmmanuelleMakro rivière sands is lush isn't it I really wanted to buy there!! Lots of beach choice with streams too and close to at ives for arcades and such

Phineyj · 02/01/2021 11:10

I would definitely recommend Hunstanton. We love it there (ASD 8 year old). It's probably much closer to you than some of these other recommendations, too, depending which side of London you are.

caringcarer · 02/01/2021 11:10

I agree Fraisethorp and Bridlington. The latter has 2 beaches North.one has sand with some large white pebbles and South huge and pure sand. Lots of amusement at top and around harbour, boat rides, fish and chips and cafes and toilets too. Also close by beaches if want to use shrimping net in small rock pools. Plentiful cheap B and B or caravan parks. Haven is close by Primrose Valley with entertainment for children and large play swim pool. Look up Primrose Valley on Google. Only about 12 miles from Bridlington. My in-laws live at Bridlington and there is lots to do for children in the summer.

dootball · 02/01/2021 11:14
