To think we can find a seaside town to suit us all?

I feel I'm going around in circles trying to find a UK holiday destination both children will like. It should be easy but it isn't. Can anyone help?

  1. Needs a sandy beach with a small stream running across it (or water outlet/pipe will do!). My 15 year old son is autistic and loves to create canals and divert water and would happily spend all day doing this.

  2. Needs to be near a proper seaside town with lots of amusement arcades for my daughter. She loves places like Great Yarmouth but a little smaller would be okay.

The beach for my son and arcades for my daughter don't need to be in the same place, just within driving distance. I can Google seaside towns but I get nothing when googling "beach with stream" so hoping someone with local knowledge can help. Thank you!

I thought of dymchurch too.

Depending on where in the south you are I agree with Saundersfoot. Stream on the beach (its a huge beach that always has loads of space too) and arcade for your daughter. Near to Tenby which has more of them. Highly recommended!

MrsJBaptiste · 02/01/2021 09:25

Whitby for the arcades and Sandsend for the beach/stream 😀

Kayjay2018 · 02/01/2021 09:27

Swanage is amazing and I think meets your criteria. I love taking the family there!

thosetalesofunexpected · 02/01/2021 09:27

Hi Op
What about the beach side resort where tragic case Crime watch TV Presenter, Jill Dando came from?

My Geography is not very good,
I have been there before lovely resort place.
Anybody know where I mean?

NannyR · 02/01/2021 09:28

I would suggest Sandsend and Whitby too. Sandsend is a lovely "bucket and spade" beach with a stream across it and Whitby has all the arcades, shops, fish and chips etc very nearby.

CountessFrog · 02/01/2021 09:30

If you get to Cornwall, try Holywell Bay, it has a fab stream

leopardspotsdotdotdot · 02/01/2021 09:32

Lyme Regis has an arcade, lovely safe sandy beach, and you can walk along parts of the river too.

CountessFrog · 02/01/2021 09:32

Holywell Bay

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Tynemouth Long Sands beach has a good water inlet bit next to the cafe (Crusoes). For arcades etc There is the rest of that bit of coastline (Cullercoats/Whitley Bay).
Yes Tynemouth long sands has streams at either end.

The Gower? Mumbles has a traditional pier with arcades and amusements, lots of amazing beaches... Caswell in particular has a little stream running through the beach and also has a surf school specifically for children with different abilities (Surfability) so maybe some lessons could be on the cards? It was on DIY SOS The Big Build recently. Lots of other beaches with streams or rivers (Pwlldu and Three cliffs etc) although these are further out and require a walk down to them. Traffic here is never too bad plus there is the advantage of being next to Swansea with the usual activities (pools, cinema, sports etc) if the weather is rubbish.

billybagpuss · 02/01/2021 09:38

I’ll second saundersfoot amroth nearby has a couple of streams as does manorbier, and there’s a bay nearby you walk through bosherton lakes to a beach which had a fairly large sea pool with loads of water diversion. You also have Tenby which would be perfect for everyone

redrise · 02/01/2021 09:39

Hollywell Bay looks lovely! Mumbles and Swansea look good too. My daughter needs constant activities so a town with a pool and things like trampoline parks etc would be perfect. My son would be happy on a beach all day but I can see my daughter getting bored in Cornwall (although my husband and I would love it!!)

I was going to mention Tenby Resort too,
Highly recommend Tenby, very picturesque Medieval Town.
In medieval times its was important place for commerce etc,
Hence the merchants dwelling with its connection to "the silk rds" of China etc.
Also there is quite an interesting small museum based on Archeology of Pembrokeshire and other historical curious items of interest too.

Also the medieval Historical merchants dwelling house is worth a vist too, whilst visiting Tenby..

But wasn't sure there were river inlets too for Op son to explore/play at.

Good thread Post Op
Really cheers me up thinking of innocent lovely times on the beach
thank you for that...
Just what Doc ordered in shit Covid Times...

We went to Scarborough a few times.Great beach and arcades at the front. We stopped in a hotel so great on night walk along the front get a meal etc. Bridlington was driveable too. Lots of driveable beaches. Sure there was a stream in Bridlington as the other person said. There is a great water park in Scarborough to which is obviously closed at the moment. We are actually hoping to Great Yarmouth this year as family member moved there.

redrise · 02/01/2021 09:45

My husband and I love small quaint seaside towns and Tenby sounds great. I've just Googled things to go nearby and there's a theme park and trampoline park. I think a small water park too!

Whitby and Sandsend definitely an option too!

Someone mentioned west wittering which is lovely, but no arcades very nearby, the pools are more static rather than flowing streams and it is very very busy in summer although I guess that’s the case anywhere.
It is a gorgeous massive sandy beach though

Daisypod · 02/01/2021 09:48

I would suggest somewhere around Cardiff, plenty of little towns and villages. Barry has loads of arcades and a gorgeous Sandy beach. Llantwit major has a beach with a stream running into it from the mountains and plenty of space to build dams and troughs. Also has a Sandy beach and rock pools bit. They even discovered a new dinosaur there a couple of years ago and its fossils are in Cardiff museum. Both these are within 30 mins of Cardiff which as a capital city has loads to do, shopping, museum, castle, restaurants. You can also take some lovely walks along the coast.

gingerbreadfox · 02/01/2021 09:48

Do your children like fossils? If so, Walton on the Naze. The beaches are covered in sharks teeth to find. Sandy beaches and a pier with amusements too.

Makingnumber2 · 02/01/2021 09:50

If you park at the very far end of Worthing sea front and walk up beach towards the pier (with arcades) there’s outlet pipes at intervals along the beach.

Allergictoironing · 02/01/2021 09:51

Another one near Newquay in Cornwall is Porth. River running down a long beach, island at the end of one of the cliffs that you need to cross a suspension bridge to get to, pitch & putt course on the cliffs.

Makingnumber2 · 02/01/2021 09:51

Ahhh sorry ignore my suggestion. I somehow missed the sandy bit in your requirements!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/01/2021 09:54

Swanage, there was a family the other day having a great time damming the stream at the far end of the beach, amusement arcade and other activities as well, although Weymouth is a lot bigger

movingonup20 · 02/01/2021 09:55

My kids (and dog he's a better digger) had great fun in Pembrokeshire damming, beach was near Tenby which has what you need for your dd
