To Be Worried About Baby Temperature

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 02/01/2021 08:53

Sorry I know this is probably the wrong place to post but very anxious and would appreciate as much advice as poss
DS 11 months has since New Year's Eve had a high temperature of between 38-40
Have been giving regular Calpol and ensuring he's not overdressed, lots of water and boob, refusing all food except the odd mouthful of petit filous
I called 111 for advice the first night as I was alarmed his temperature was 40, they said to continue doing what I'm doing and keep an eye on him.
My question is how long is it usual for babies to have a temperature this high thats only slightly coming down with calpol before going back up again?
if relevant he has also not poohed since new years eve morning when he usually has 2 big poohs a day. having wet nappies.
Thanks! x

I think you need to speak to your GP

Pesimistic · 02/01/2021 08:57

Please speak with gp or phone 111 again its quite a while for baby to have a high temp

FippertyGibbett · 02/01/2021 08:59

If he’s not eating then there won’t be a lot to poo, so don’t worry unless he’s showing signs of tummy discomfort or constipation.
Are you giving Ibuprofen too ?
What is his temp an hour after calpol ?
Does he have any obvious signs of an infection like a productive cough or pawing at his ear ?

Norwayreally · 02/01/2021 08:59

Call 111 again, I’m surprised they haven’t asked you to go to an urgent care clinic tbh. It’s a long time for a baby to have a high temp and 40 is very high.

grey12 · 02/01/2021 09:01

I would say don't worry about poop but do call 111 regarding fever that isn't going away.

Hope you're little one gets better quick Thanks

GlumyGloomer · 02/01/2021 09:04

The fact that it doesn't come down much with calpol is alarming, make sure they know that. It's awful if your kid has a temperature right now as everyone thinks covid and refuses to see them. Keep pushing to get them seen. I had this back in the first lockdown, took a day of pestering 111 and eventually going to a walk in centre. It was bacterial, a couple of minutes face to face confirmed it.

Aozora13 · 02/01/2021 09:05

Yes please speak to 111 or your GP. Have you tried nurofen? There’s a kids one in a syrup like calpol. One of my DC ended up in hospital as a baby with a raging temp that wouldn’t come down with calpol but was fine after taking one dose of nurofen. They told me at the hospital that some kids temps don’t respond to calpol. I since found out from my aunt that one of my cousins was the same. But I’m just a mum not a medical professional so please do speak to 111/doc/pharmacist

Have you had a covid test OP for your baby? DD had a fever on her 1 yr birthday and I couldn't get seen until we had a covid test done so be prepared for that. You only need to do it up their nose when they are so little but it's still difficult.

Wakeupin2022 · 02/01/2021 09:07

Its probably nothing to worry about - my kids often had high temps for days.

BUT I would want baby to be seen by a Dr. It may be a viral infection or they may need a dose of antibiotics.

I would phone 111 again.

110Cornets · 02/01/2021 09:09

Google the lullaby trust baby check. It takes you through a basic triage of checks you can do yourself and then tells you what action to take- none/home medication/GP/Urgent care/A and E.

Atalune · 02/01/2021 09:10

My DS was like this and often would have high temps. Call 111 again or try and speak to your GP. It could be something and nothing so best to get a professional to take a look.

Patienceisvirtuous · 02/01/2021 09:14

Ibuprofen may work on the temp better than Calpol - but yes - definitely a visit to GP.

Hope little one feels better soon.

OP doesn't say he's had a COVID swab, as far as I can see.
Mousehole10 · 02/01/2021 09:47

Has baby had a covid test? Any temperature you need to test and isolate.

Or just isolate. No need to test if already isolating.

I know. Surely it goes without saying though that anyone with a fever will have had a test, given that we are in the middle of a pandemic and it’s one of the main symptoms.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 02/01/2021 09:51

Thanks so much for your replies. He seems much worse at night, so for the last 2 nights he will only settle when held and on the boob and cries horribly as soon as I try to put him down, right now however for example he is playing on the floor with toys and has been pushing his walker around.
Just took his temp and its 38, so its come down a bit with the calpol but seems to shoot back up once it wears off.
Although of course if I was advised to take him to the out of hours doctor at hospital I would, I'm hesistant about hanging around hospitals in the current climate. Also to add to this I have a 3yr old DD and I'm home alone with both of them as OH is at work (as bloody always) so I would need to take her too. I shouldn't moan as he is working not out on a jolly but I'm feeling sorry for myself constantly having to parent our kids alone.
Anyway with that update re playing on the floor/seeming a bit brighter- should I still be worried?
Thanks again x

You can give baby nurfeon with the calpol - only just found this out when my 1 year old had a temp that wouldn’t shift! I would call your gp though or if you can (not sure with Covid) take them to urgent care, that’s far too long for a temp not to shift at all. Make sure they are also getting lots of fluids too

Raaaaaaarr · 02/01/2021 09:54

Please call your GP just to be on the safe side. The GP always asks me are they weeing, pooing and eating normally? Your little one is not pooing and eating normally and so you should see a GP today x

Mousehole10 · 02/01/2021 09:54

@Toomuchtooyoung01 you haven’t said if baby has had a covid test or not? Your DH shouldn’t be out at work as you should all be isolating either for 10 days or until baby gets a negative test.

thebakeoffwasntasgoodthisyear · 02/01/2021 09:54

OH is at work

Does OH live with you? He/she should be isolating unless your baby has had a negative Covid test.

Raaaaaaarr · 02/01/2021 09:57

Sorry to add. You may be able to get a phone consultation with a doctor first if you're not keen on going into a walk in centre.

FightingWithTheWind · 02/01/2021 10:14

I would still try and talk to a doctor, some young children can seem like they are perfectly happy while still being very poorly and its very common for them to be more bothered at night. It is a long time for that high of a temperature so ring GP if possible, 111 again if not, its so hard at this age because they can't tell you what is wrong.
