As if life isn't hard enough, my DH is a bit of a conspiracy nut regarding covid. According to him the pandemic is nowhere near as bad as they make out, and it's all to do with agenda 30, depopulation and the great reset. To quote whoever said it "you'll have nothing and be happy". I know it's nonsense but it still scares me. He said we should prepare and that it's only the elite who will get by. We won't be allowed to own anything. Please reassure me and give me advice on how to respond. Surely the great reset doesn't mean anything too bad.

I think the best thing to remember about conspiracy theories is that those in charge of the world are (a) of average intelligence (b) particularly egotistical (c) can’t organise anything (d) rely on a huge force of civil servants to actually get anything done.

The idea of them being able to organise a conspiracy without everyone being aware of it is laughable. These theories are put out by people who have never worked in government, never known anyone who has worked in government, and think it is much much more powerful and efficient than it actually is.

Having worked in the civil service I can assure you the government and the elite couldn’t organise anything, as I think brexit and the Covid response should have made very clear. So just bear this in mind and chill.

ripples101 · 01/01/2021 18:54

Your husband says that covid isn’t as bad as they are making out, then in the next breath mentions depopulation...

SueDeNimm · 01/01/2021 18:54

You must avoid this batshit nonsense at all costs. Unless it's a major news publication do not read it. Avoid Twitter snd Facebook snd wherever this mad shit is published - it's really very easy I promise. The bbc, times, etc is the level of news you want - not weird freaks making things up. Honestly. I never see these stupid theories from one day to the next, they are very easy to not see.

Tell your DH to keep this shit to himself too. Anc get him to a GP as he's clearly having MH issues at the moment.

“Yes there is a plan to change the population of Europe. The people denying this are assisting”

You forgot to include your source.

Cam77 · 01/01/2021 19:03

“The bbc, times, etc is the level of news you want -“

Hmm, yes and no. I’d hardly call the BBC a trusted source these days. It’s basically just a British government/British establishment mouthpiece, with most of its headlines straight from the right wing press and then just skimming off a small bit of crazy.

Sparklesocks · 01/01/2021 19:07

@TulesDana

Yes there is a plan to change the population of Europe. The people denying this are assisting. I'm originally from Denmark, it's openly discussed there without shooting people down as conspiracy theorists etc. It's actually very worrying and I fear what Europe will be like for future generations.
Change the population into what exactly? Donkeys like in Pinocchio perhaps?
Cam77 · 01/01/2021 19:08

If we hadn’t locked down/social distanced at all and we’d had a “very bad flu season” the crazies would then be saying that was a conspiracy and the elite was trying to decimate the population.

The problem governments face is that Covid-19 is a serious pandemic but not a super serious pandemic. Almost all actions will inevitably end up as being either too lenient or too strict. Lockdown seems over the top, while carry on as you were with a bit of social distancing doesn’t cut it.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 01/01/2021 19:10

Shouldn't this be in the Coronavirus topic?

Michaelschofield · 01/01/2021 19:10

He’s speaking the truth

Orf1abc · 01/01/2021 19:16

Are you more scared of what is happening in the world, or of a man that can't separate conspiracy theory from reality? There's a lot going on in the world that concerns me, but there's little I can do about it and I know I'm safe and (relatively) secure in my home. If your fear is coming from someone in your own home, then that's what needs to be addressed. Honestly, I'd be suggesting he finds somewhere else to stay until he gets a grip on reality.

(I wouldn't assume he has a mental illness either, unless there are other areas of his life and behaviour that give you cause for concern.)

chaosisaladder · 01/01/2021 19:18

@Michaelschofield provide links please, I am bored and need a laugh

Well he is the source of the fear, yes. If he hadn't told me these things I wouldn't have googled it.

Oh FFS grow up and drop the conspiracy theories.

Do you always believe the utter shite that comes out of your DH's mouth? Just because he's fallen down a Qanon rabbit hole (designed for thickos) doesn't mean you have to be afraid!!!

No need to be rude when I'm suffering a lot of anxiety.

Is there some sort of bat signal that goes up when this shit gets posted, which attracts all of the nutters and their unsubstantiated bullshit? Hmm

Janonomouse · 01/01/2021 19:31

Read up on the conspiracy theories that surrounded previous pandemics (swine flu, bird flu, spanish flu and whatever else).

Every time there's a pandemic, there are conspiracy theories. Almost all the covid conspiracy theories are repeats of theories from previous pandemics. It's a predictable response from a segment of the population.

You have my sympathy though, if my DP turned into that sort if idiot I'd be long gone.

My eyeballs just fell off the back of my head

What a lot of manure.

I get SO angry with people peddling this utter shit. Ffs it's just taken FIUR years to get a be it agreement in place about how many bloody fish Europe is allowed to take...

Organise a pandemic?

Don't make me laugh.

LazyFace · 01/01/2021 19:37

Does he say the virus was Bill Gates' idea to solve the overpopulation problem? That's the main theory in my country.

Emeeno1 · 01/01/2021 19:37

Hi OP, I just wanted to reassure you a little. Having worked in parliament and at the headquarters of a political party the ideas put forward in conspiracy theories become laughable. In this country at least most MPs offices at best don't communicate well and at worst engage in open warfare. The idea of some organised plan behind the scenes is genuinely funny. Honestly, you have nothing to fear.

tinselearedcow · 01/01/2021 19:38

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants hahaha good point!

chaosisaladder · 01/01/2021 19:39

@LazyFace whenever I hear that conspiracy I think - fuck me, he could’ve been more efficient. Of course it can be deadly but it’s not Ebola, you know?

Janonomouse · 01/01/2021 19:45

Does he say the virus was Bill Gates' idea to solve the overpopulation problem? That's the main theory in my country.

That's a good example of how predictable these theories are. Back during the swine flu pandemic, one of the popular conspiracies was that Obama and/or the UN unleashed it as a means of population control, to help create a new world order.

I imagine most who believed in that theory at the time would acknowledge it was hogwash now but, sure enough, the same theory (with minor tweaks) resurfaces for Covid.

No doubt we'll hear similar during he next pandemic too.

MiriamMargo · 01/01/2021 19:45

Your hubby watches to many far fetched movies, does he believe we will all end up as zombies too lol

1forAll74 · 01/01/2021 19:52

Just disregard what your Husband relates to you, Lots of people get taken in by all these conspiracy theories, but you need to form your own views on things, and think more logically about everything , and not listen to others, who have way out ideas.

partyatthepalace · 01/01/2021 20:34

The great reset is a real concept, but it is often misrepresented by conspiracy theorists, as per PPs above.

I’d assume your husband is either bored, very scared himself and/or trying to sound sophisticated/clever about stuff he doesn’t understand.

I think the best thing is not to engage him in these conversations, and change the subject if he tries to engage you.

Every generation has huge challenges, but so far humanity has risen to meet them, so being realistic but hopeful is sensible. In the meantime stick to reputable websites like the BBC, NY Times etc or take out a sub to the Week.
