Friend and her partner are hoping to have a baby, same sex relationship so they are going through assisted conception. My friend read something online (am yet to find the source) that says that the vaccine affect fertility and will stop her partner having their baby, so neither of them will have the vaccine.

She isnt a stupid person, neither is her partner, but when I suggested that she look more into it she insisted that this was her research and it is FACT. I am trying to be sympathetic but if I roll my eyes anymore I think they will get stuck pointing backwards!

AIBU by thinking of doing some research of my own and sending it to her to put their minds at rest?

I've heard this a few times. I've not done any research into it though.

dementedpixie · 01/01/2021 17:06

Think you're supposed to wait a certain amount of time after vaccination before conceiving

Doublefaced · 01/01/2021 17:07

Are they clinically vulnerable or in any other at risk category?

Palavah · 01/01/2021 17:08

Pregnant and breastfeeding and women who are trying to get pregnant aren't being given the vaccine yet. Not because it's known to be unsafe but because it's not known what the effects are (one of the areas of testing that's hard to accelerate).

CaramelCandle · 01/01/2021 17:09

Why does it matter to you? They're allowed to make their own decisions whatever they choose to base it on.

This. It has been widely publicised that you shouldn’t have the Pfizer vaccine if you’re planning to conceive in the next 3 months.

Unless they are healthcare workers they are unlikely to offered the vaccine any time soon though, so it probably doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things.

Northernmummy80 · 01/01/2021 17:10

I have heard this too, not done any research yet to find out one way or another.

I am assuming what was said is there isn’t enough data to 100% confirm it doesn’t affect fertility.

JustHereWithPopcorn · 01/01/2021 17:10

I have read there is no research yet if it can affect fertility so it's the unknown which may worry some people

EveryThingWillBeWorthIt · 01/01/2021 17:10

There's a line in the Pfizer safety data that says the affect on fertility can't be determined. The medical board suggested waiting three months after the last dose to TTC but this has since been revised when the Oxford vaccine was approved. Honestly it's freaked me out a bit but anyone in the wider population won't be having the vaccine anytime soon so hopefully there will be some more information to make a better judgement.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/01/2021 17:11

Friend isnt, partner has asthma.

@Palavah I did say that anything surrounding pregnancy is treated very carefully with things like this as its so hard to test effects as what pregnant woman would want to be a guinea pig with something that could harm their baby. I cant see how the vaccine would affect fertility though, I really cant!

You can read about it here:

Great...is the OP another anti-vaxer in disguise pretending to be an innocent "I have heard this but can't find the source"

All it does it perpetuate shite such as that which has meant so many young adults suffer mumps and measles when at university etc due to what Wakefield pumped out over MMR. This time it just means a lot more people will die, and not just the ones who refuse the vaccine but those they pass it to.

How about being responsible and if there is a credible peer assessed piece of research then perhaps discuss that..not "I have heard"

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/01/2021 17:19

No I am not an anti vaxer. All 6 of my kids have had their full vaccinations apart from my second who had a massive reaction to her first as a baby and only had the ones she needs to have for her job under full clinical supervision in case of another reaction. I am very grateful for the protection herd immunity gave her as a child!

I have sent a couple of articles to my friend so fingers crossed.

I did read that some Psizer researcher thought that the vaccine could induce an immune response against pregnancy. According to Snopes that person does exist and did say that. That is just one vaccine though. No reason to think that the AstraZeneca one would be harmful to fertility

june2007 · 01/01/2021 17:28

Maskinfforlt that is uncalled for. So it seems that advice is perhaps hold off trying if your having the vaccine thats not anti vax. I don,t know either way but would be courtious myself regarding this and would do my own research and not have a go at those who think differently. (lets face it they are new vaccines and full implications are not yet fully known.)

bitheby · 01/01/2021 17:29

I work in the NHS and haven't applied fir the Pfizer vaccine because it's not recommended for people trying to conceive. They say to delay for 3 months after the second dose and I can't afford to wait that long.

Your tone comes across as very sneery. Perhaps do your own research before being so condescending.

millymollymoomoo · 01/01/2021 17:38

The real concern for me, ignoring media and YouTube etc, and actually looking through the Pfizer and Oxford uni vaccine scientific literature, states that no trials on possible impacts to fertility have taken place. So while they may have zero impact, we actually have no idea as that has not even been studied!
I’m not anti vaccine in any way usually, and I would probably have this ‘pressured’ but no way will I be giving it to my children until we know this

Fingers crossed for what exactly? The government site says not to have it if TTC or breastfeeding.
HelloDulling · 01/01/2021 17:40

If they are of an age to be having a baby, they are unlikely to be given the vaccine any time soon, so it’s a complete non-issue.

bruce43mydog · 01/01/2021 17:44

I was stood in the bank just before Christmas and the man in the que said he had advised his daughters who are 25 and 30 not to have the vaccination for the same reason.

I asked him if he would have it and he said yes that he was 58 and he would have it mainly so he could start going abroad.

"If they are of an age to be having a baby, they are unlikely to be given the vaccine any time soon, so it’s a complete non-issue."

Well many front line health staff and care workers are of child bearing age so that comment doesn't make sense.

notalwaysalondoner · 01/01/2021 17:53

The vaccine hasn’t been tested on pregnant women so you shouldn’t get pregnant immediately after. Frankly I’d be stunned if there have been any tests to check its impact on fertility beyond noticing if there were obvious changes statistically in the group testing the vaccine. But then I don’t think vaccines ever have an impact on fertility so it’s medically exceedingly unlikely. This is much much much more likely to be anti vaxxer propaganda. However I can understand if they are desperate to conceive for the carrier to prefer to avoid the vaccine until after the pregnancy. Not their partner though. And surely this is all a bit theoretical as if they are young they won’t be offered it anyway for ages?
