To think alcohol doesn’t agree with me anymore

Not a big drinker, usually have a g&t on a Friday, maybe 2 glasses of wine at the weekend.

Recently I’ve noticed that I get a headache every time I have a drink. Every single time. Doesn’t seem to matter what it is or how much. Just feel yucky, lethargic, sleepy and then headachy. It’s putting me off drinking anything at all, which is a shame as I used to enjoy a couple of drinks with DH at the weekend.

I’m in my forties, not overweight or suffering any health concerns, and it seems to have happened quite recently in the last few months.

Anyone else suffering similarly?

Yes, I don’t drink any more. I had something similar with wine. Slightly better with vodka so if I had to drink that would be my choice but I haven’t drank in 4/5 years.

lorn195 · 01/01/2021 11:33

Me. I had three glasses of wine last night, and woke up feeling awful.

@WilsonMilson same here, no underlying health problems and fit for my age (51), so can't explain why I'm feeling so yucky.

Madmoxxi · 01/01/2021 11:36

I'm 28 and have a hugely disproportionate reaction to alcohol, have my whole life. I only drink a few times a year now because even 2 drinks can cause a whole day hangover. Alcohol intolerance? Is that a thing.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/01/2021 11:38

Welcome to peri-menopause.

WilsonMilson · 01/01/2021 11:40

It’s quite depressing as I used to enjoy a couple of drinks. Now it just doesn’t seem worth it to even have one. What a bore!

Minky37 · 01/01/2021 11:40

Yes, but it seem to be specific to wine. I don’t seem to be able to tolerate any wine at all now. Had a couple of glasses last night and feel stomach achey, very tired and a bit thick headed. In the past I could have drink far more without ill effects.
I do seem to be able to tolerate a single gin & tonic much better.

WilsonMilson · 01/01/2021 11:41

Thanks @Aquamarine1029 that’s cheered me up no end. Grin

@Aquamarine1029 deep joy, another thing to add to the list of things I detest about peri menopause.

lidoshuffle · 01/01/2021 11:41

When I hit the peri menopause and got a very bad reaction to even a glass of alcohol. I went teetotal for a couple of years. I can drink modestly post-menopause, happily!

Gwynfluff · 01/01/2021 11:43

It’s often the sulphites in white wine that cause this effect

BigGreen · 01/01/2021 11:43

Gosh I was thinking this myself. Two normal G&Ts and I've woken up feeling shit.

Is it to do with peri @Aquamarine1029? I'm late 30s.

Monr0e · 01/01/2021 11:44

I'm the same OP. I'm 46, used to enjoy a good night out with a fair few drinks. Now I'm a couple of glasses of wine at the weekend and I don't sleep well and wake up feeling off all day.

I had no idea it was linked to peri menopause!

WilsonMilson · 01/01/2021 11:44

@lidoshuffle I’m very glad to hear there’s some hope, lol!

OP posts:
lorn195 · 01/01/2021 11:45

@WilsonMilson I'll second that.

Itsmeeloise · 01/01/2021 11:46

Could be intolerance to preservatives (sulfites) in wine. A one-a-day allergy tablet may help...

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 01/01/2021 11:49

Another of my hobbies ruined by the demon peri menopause. I hadn't heard this either but it makes sense.

nothinglikemyname · 01/01/2021 11:49

Try Clean Wine. It's a spray you put in your wine glass and it removes the sulfates...I was getting headaches after 1 glass of red and since using it, nothing since.

LoveMySituation · 01/01/2021 11:50

I'm in peri BigGreen, and I can't drink anymore. I've read that organic wine is better

ObliviouslyIgnorant · 01/01/2021 12:00

What is perimenopause and how do you know that you have it?

Aquamarine1029 · 01/01/2021 12:06

What is perimenopause and how do you know that you have it?

It's the period of time in which your hormones are fluctuating before menopause, and can last up to 10 years or longer, depending on the woman.

Symptoms can include your periods changing, anxiety and/or increased anxiety, mood issues, trouble sleeping, headaches, joint aches, night sweats, hot flushes, digestive issues, changes in your hair and skin, dry eyes, etc.

Plonque · 01/01/2021 12:07

I feel very much the same, alcohol is not agreeing with me at all anymore.

If anyone here wants to come and join us on the Dry January Thread, you'd be in fine company.
A few, me included, have said we're going to use it as a stepping off point to staying alcohol free indefinitely.

BubblyBarbara · 01/01/2021 12:08

It makes sense really. Drinking is essentially poisoning yourself and your body gets less resilient to this self harm as you get older.

queenMab99 · 01/01/2021 12:08

Alcohol has no benefits for me now, since my early 50s I have not been able to drink more than one glass, without having a headache next day, and now I find it doesnt even give me a slight lift in mood Sad

SauvignonGrower · 01/01/2021 12:11

Yes. Many people find taking an anti-histamine tablet before they drink helps. It does for me, though now I've really given up drinking much at all.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 01/01/2021 12:14

I'm 42, I have alot of the symptoms of PM, I developed a nickel allergy in my late 30s, the nurse told me I had probably always had it but your body fights things until you get older then basically gets fed up, she said get ready for bits falling off everywhere or just not working Grin
That spray sounds worth a try, I don't fancy giving up wine altogether.
