To ask those who have had COVID to donate plasma

OxfordwillsaveusbyFebruary · 31/12/2020 13:11

I have just received a call from the nhs asking for me to donate plasma.

My adult children have both donated
It sounds like they are desperate from the call ,
I volunteered in October but didn’t meet the age or weight criteria when I looked then but now they say I am ok

So if you looked but we’re not eligible then look again

I was really keen to donate but I Have MS so they don't want mine. Also had to give up donating blood. 😰

One of my family also can’t donate as they had a pre 1990 blood transfusion.

I do wonder how bad it must be if they are contacting people previously rejected like me

They don't want mine because I'm 5'2" apparently "don't have sufficient plasma"

LIZS · 31/12/2020 13:23

Dd looked but didn't meet the weight criteria. You do need a relatively high bmi .

OxfordwillsaveusbyFebruary · 31/12/2020 13:25

Apparently no longer, ask her to look again

If I’d had covid it’s something I would def do. Getting my vaccine Monday so wonder if they will want vaccine antibodies.

Not sure if height or bmi ruled me out 1st time but apparently I am now good

I checked yesterday as I had the text. I’m 5’6” and you needed to be 12 st 2 and above to donate. I’m a long way below that. It was less if you were a man. Is there a sex based reason why women need to be heavier than the same height man?

What BMi is that?

So That would be a bmi of 27?

My DH has done this a few times already. Last time was start of December. He had covid back in March and they said he’s still got a really high level of antibodies which was really reassuring!

DoTheNextRightThing · 31/12/2020 13:36

I went on the Scotblood page for it and I pass their short quiz - but I'm 5'2 and less than 10st so it sounds like I'm too small judging by whatever metrics you are all looking at? (I can't access the NHS donation thing because I'm in Scotland)

Looneytune253 · 31/12/2020 13:39

It doesn't last long tho. My dh donated once and had very high levels of antibodies but not enough the second time

Suze1621 · 31/12/2020 15:30

As I have just recovered from Covid, have just had a look. Unfortunately at 5' 4" I would have to weigh at least 12stone 8lbs to have enough plasma to donate. This represents a minimum bmi of 30 and 'obese'

janetmendoza · 31/12/2020 15:32

Really quite rare that women can donate I was disappointed

A man of the same height and weight is likely to have more muscle and less fat tissue and therefore more blood..... women naturally carry more fat than men. Men typically carry more muscle, especially upper body muscle
sweetchristmastime · 31/12/2020 15:48

I was asked, but it's a two hour drive for me to get to the place to do it. Which is too far to travel

choirmumoftwo · 31/12/2020 16:17

DD was assessed to donate but was told her veins were too weak. She does give blood though.

ChristmasBubble · 31/12/2020 16:23

My sister had a dizzy spell during the assessment procedure and was told not to donate even if she got a letter telling her she could. As it happens she didn't have enough antibodies.

tinytemper66 · 31/12/2020 16:28

I had a blood transfusion I 1995 and can't give blood anymore. I wish I could.

ThePricklySheep · 31/12/2020 16:36

Oddly, in Scotland it seems there isn’t the weight limit

ghostyslovesheets · 31/12/2020 16:38

I would but - as previous posters have said - I'm to short at 5ft 1"

modgepodge · 31/12/2020 16:42

I registered ages ago and never heard anything. My husband registered at the same time and he was contested and donated, but didn’t have enough antibodies. I have just registered again, unfortunately I am the required weight!!

TheGoogleMum · 31/12/2020 16:44

You need good veins. DH tried but was rejected. They always struggle to find mine so I'm sure Id be rejected too (also I'm under 5' tall so might fail height requirements)

Rowgtfc72 · 31/12/2020 16:47

Went online happy to donate to find I am absolutely nowhere near a donation centre.
