... find appropriate childcare?

The announcement that secondaries are not going back until w/b 11th with exam classes and w/b 18th for all other years, together with the very vague "some" primaries will be shut in high-infection areas.

Given that most of us have been plunged into Tier 4, how will we actually find out whether our children can go back to school?

I really don't get people defending Boris. They usually begin with 'I'm no fan of Boris but...', and then explain how it's all not his fault. Who are these defenders and what is their agenda?!

Belladonna12 · 30/12/2020 18:42

Mine completely shut down and stopped communicating with friends. He will be going in as a keyworker child as I am scared this won't be just a week or two.

It will only be for a week or two. The majority of secondary school children will have no problems.

BigGreen · 30/12/2020 18:43

Gosh that list is half of London and tons of Essex! Hundreds of schools. Surprising that Haringey is not on the list.

I'd have liked the government to give more notice. Even a few days would have helped. I think the fact that London has gone from T2 to T4 with additional schools lockdown in a couple of weeks, shows that we should have been in T3 much earlier.

I agree that there's not much else to do but asking employers for more time off definitely strains credulity.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 30/12/2020 18:45

Come in most of us see this coming and were expecting it half the country has been calling for it.
Yes its shit but if they go back to soon and cases go even higher we will be in a worse position
Personally I would of rather seen a 3/4 week full lockdown to get numbers down and vaccines rolled out, this way I can see kids going in , then being sent back home to isolate , then back again and we will go tier 4/3 back to 4 etc

Unsure33 · 30/12/2020 18:47

Boris said schools were safe but that taking the virus back to mix with households was the problem.

In other words safe for students. In that the vast majority are not really ill with the virus

Why do people always pick and chose what they want to hear ?

If they were safe from the new mutation they would not be attempting the mass testing would they .

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 30/12/2020 18:48

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum a school near us closed as well a week or so before due to number of cases so yes it was possible

Unsure33 · 30/12/2020 18:48

I see German deaths were 1000 today . No doubt that’s the fault of Boris as well .

mumwon · 30/12/2020 18:48

can someone explain to me if day nurseries will have to shut in areas where primary schools are shut?

Musicaldilemma · 30/12/2020 18:49

Does anyone know if “critical worker” means 2 parents being critical workers, or is 1 enough?
My employer won’t give me unpaid leave if we qualify through DH and we would have 4 kids at home, unless preschool take the 4 year old (although previously preschool just opened when they wanted to).

oh god.
  1. In other words safe for students. In that the vast majority are not really ill with the virus

No, it's not safe for students. The fact that a smaller percentage gets sick doesn't=safe. They get infected as any adult. And they usually live in a household. And in that household there are other people, usually called mom/dad/sister/brother. Sometimes even grandma/grandpa.
Ant these additional people do get sick more likely if the virus is introduced into the mix.

  1. If they were safe from the new mutation they would not be attempting the mass testing would they.
The mass testing is a joke. It has nothing to do with public health, IT'S A PR STUNT. And most ppl fell for it hook, line and sinker.

*I don’t mean to be rude and I’m certainly not intending to be fussy but, genuinely, what do you expect the government to do? The situation is fast-moving and they are reacting when need be.

I get that it’s frustrating but I do wonder what people want the government to do. They are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.*

Prevention would have been better than reaction.

This was foreseeable. Mixing at Christmas (cancelled too late for far too many to have impact), schools begging to be able to shut early to prevent the same chaos after the break and being penalised if they made that decision. The new strain, which, as published days ago, spreads faster among young people also. Winter in general. It's not rocket science to see what should have happened weeks ago.

But if they had reacted earlier and shut the schools before Christmas, wouldn't the parents still be in the same situation albeit just earlier and you would have been saying the same thing then ? I don't understand your point 😕
Thecherryontheverytop · 30/12/2020 18:52

I'm not fan of BJ, but what's he meant to do? We don't have lockdown then everyone's complaining, then we do and everyone's complaining. Schools open and everyone's mad about it, then some are shut and everyone's complaining again!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 30/12/2020 18:54

My London borough is quite rightly on the list. So only online until heaven knows when. I can't see us going back until after February half term at the earliest.

Can send them in as keyworker kids but they will just get lessons online like everyone else. We will keep them at home like first lockdown.

My year 10 is suffering with online lessons fatigue already after doing that for three weeks before Christmas. He is not happy with this news.

So hard on the kids and people still won't wear masks or follow the more sensible rulesSad.

SilkiesnowchicksandXmastreecat · 30/12/2020 18:55

Critical worker / EHCP at our school to qualify you also needed 2 full-time working parents neither of which could work at home but it varied by school so worth asking. Think officially it was meant to be 1.

They are in power, they have a whole set of gov officials working under them. They have/had the power to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN, to come up with a strategy, to do what's right. AND THEY CHOSE NOT TO.

I have designed a ttr system and full covid strategy outline*. I was bored. Did it to exercise my mind. They have people being paid for this stuff. That's what gov could do as a minimum.

*totally irrelevant how good/bad/sensible it was or wasn't. It took me about 2 weeks. Now we are in the 11th MONTH!

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 30/12/2020 18:56

Would it kill them to put that list in alphabetical order?

SimonJT · 30/12/2020 18:57

I don’t think Gavin knows the alphabet yet.
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 30/12/2020 18:57

I see Greenwich isn't included. The government are obviously trying to kill off some of those labour councillors Grin

mumwon · 30/12/2020 18:58

Oh & lets not forget idiots on facebook & twitter denying use of facemask or that there is even a problem or the hospitals are empty or its not as bad as flu
et al etc or whatever

Randomrebel · 30/12/2020 18:58

OP relax and get a life the school staff are off work for a much needed Christmas break. I am sure someone will be on the rota to go in before Monday and communicate the info to parents. However, I am sure they will leave things as late as possible as things may change again before Monday in this climate. In the meantime give your employer the heads up/let them know that you are hoping the DC will be in school next week but don’t know for sure. If you have another option without putting anyone in danger might be as well to start exploring that so you have a plan B.

RubyViolet · 30/12/2020 18:59

Why didn’t they let parents know before Christmas so they could set up childcare arrangements. It’s just so last minute.

Absolutely it is Boris’s fault, largely due to Brexit no doubt. Because according to mumsnet every other country in the world is the best place to live (esp France) with no problems whatsoever.

There’s a large contingent on here who base their entire knowledge of chatting to other mums at the school gates, regurgitating a mixture of what their DHs have said when home for a couple of hours from their ever so important job which prevents the DH from having any time for their families, what they have gleaned from the Guardian online and what Felicity mentioned in the queue for their yoga class. Generally they are really angry that Jeremy Corbyn isn’t in number 10.

withmycoffee · 30/12/2020 19:02

Nearly 1000 people recorded dead today. I'm not sure why anyone is complaining about schools being shut
