To ask could someone naturally have a high temperature and not be ill

Ds1 who’s an adult reckons his temple is always above 37 and I know 37 is the maximum normal temperature. He reckons his is usually above 37 more like 37.6. His temperature today is 38 but he says he’s not unwell. He’s ordered himself a test.

My husband and son naturally run at higher than 37 degrees which always seems to surprise folks. Its just the way they are.

Chanjer · 29/12/2020 18:50

Some people run hotter, some run cooler. 37 is a useful average

itsgettingweird · 29/12/2020 18:50

Up to 37.5° can be considered normal so you're both right.

37.8° and above is considered a fever. As a guide.

But people can and do have varying body temperatures. If my ds is ill his can drop to 35.3°. Worrying for some but as he has a neurological condition and he's always been fine his neurologist has logged it as normal for him.

He's been down to 33.4° before

Hellvelyn · 29/12/2020 18:53

Is your thermometer faulty? We had one of those ear ones and it wasn't unusual for it to read 38degrees. Bought one of the forehead scan ones and temp reliably around 36.5.

MistletoeandGin · 29/12/2020 18:54

Mine runs at about 37.2 naturally.

Dullardmullard · 29/12/2020 18:59

My temp stay the same when unwell strangely and I mean really ill. Docs find me intriguing.

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 29/12/2020 19:00

It’s not unusual for mine to be 37.4

TwnklTwnklLittleStarfighter · 29/12/2020 19:01

Yes, 37.8 is my completely normal healthy temperature. With the same thermometer the rest of my family vary from 36.4-36.8.

JessicaPeach · 29/12/2020 19:02

Mine is often high, always has been, 38 sometimes, certainly almost always in the mid to high 37s

Lougle · 29/12/2020 19:05

Up to 37.5°c is a 'normal' temperature, but exercise, eating and drinking can all increase temperature, so you should wait 15-20 minutes after eating before taking your temp.

TruJay · 29/12/2020 19:09

Dh and I have been wondering this. Dh has an extremely rare blood disorder so we wonder if his heightened temperature because of this would cause him issues if he was temperature tested because of Covid worries.

WanderingMilly · 29/12/2020 19:16

Different people have a different normal temp, I was told that at hospital by a doctor. Mine runs at 36 degrees as normal, every time.

BillysMyBunny · 29/12/2020 19:21

Up to 37.5 is normal so not that unusual if your DP is above 37 and a temperature doesn’t count as a fever until it’s above 37.8. Some people do run hotter than others and it is possible for some people to have a temperature of 37.8+ but not be unwell.

TroysMammy · 29/12/2020 19:24

Mine is between 37.4 and 37.6. The nurse in work kept checking my temperature before I had a flu jab because I've had a cough, one cough once a day for a few months. I was diagnosed with post nasal drip many years ago.

AliceMcK · 29/12/2020 19:26

Yes, my DH is like an oven to touch most of the time. I also have autoimmune conditions and will run a high temp when I’m having a flare, but dosnt mean I’m ill.

NewCatMummy · 29/12/2020 19:32

Mine is often 38.5 or down to 36. Autoimmune issues. Not a problem usually but difficult now when I’m not sure if it’s asymptomatic COVID rather than my usual issues and I don’t want to put others at risk. My kids went over 40 c every time they were ill under puberty. Also normal for them.

pam290358 · 29/12/2020 19:42

I’m on arthritis treatment which causes me to run at a slightly raised temperature. I’m often stopped and questioned after having one of those temperature gun thingy’s fired at me.

Graphista · 29/12/2020 21:41

The "normal" temperature is an average, people aren't robots there are many variances.

My dd runs hot always has one of my dn's runs cool.

So my sibling and I have had the fun at times of getting this across to hcps (who should know better really) as my dd has been thought to have a fever when she doesn't and the dn not to have a fever when they do.

Also the averages were calculated many years ago and changes in human biology have not been taken into account - the same is true for bp and pulse rates, we really need new research on this.

@Hellvelyn Inner ear temp IS different to forehead temp doesn't mean that the thermometer was "inaccurate" can be as much as 1.5°c difference

I have a naturally very low bp and pulse rate which seems almost to piss hcps off! (I'm overweight and they think this is "incorrect" in some way)

There are literally hundreds of reasons why a persons body temp may be high or appear to be high that don't mean they're infectious in any way.

AndcalloffChristmas · 29/12/2020 21:46

Mine generally seems to be lower than is considered normal.

Kamma89 · 29/12/2020 23:05

Had every test under the sun but my natural temp seems to hover around 38. Not an issue according to the medics. Been tricky with Covid as some places won't let you in if doing tempreature checks (annoying, but understandable)

R3ALLY · 29/12/2020 23:08

Myself and my son tend to be low. When he was a baby I knew he was ill once he went over 37 degrees , that was high for him.

SconNotScone · 29/12/2020 23:08

I run at around 37.4 or thereabouts. Healthy, no underlying health conditions or anything!

PoptartPoptart · 29/12/2020 23:11

I always have a temperature of between 37.2 and 37.6. DH and DS run at the more usual 36.8. I guess it’s just the way I am.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 29/12/2020 23:29

Me and ds run low. There has been a few times when ds was little and he had a really high temperature (for him) and the Doctor has taken it and said “oooh - bit high but nothing to worry about” when he was basically cooking. I made one take mine one time to prove that my natural temp is 35.6 and so his might be too.

bumblenbean · 30/12/2020 01:54

I’m nearly always over 37. Usually around 37.2 or 37.3 but sometimes around 37.5 or 6 - think it’s naturally a bit higher in the evenings. During the summer in a bout of anxiety over covid I sent myself a bit loopy taking my temperature a million times and freaking out when it gave a different reading every time, with one up to 37.7- at that point I realised it was time to step away from the thermometer!

But generally it’s always slightly higher than average...
