To ask could someone naturally have a high temperature and not be ill

Ds1 who’s an adult reckons his temple is always above 37 and I know 37 is the maximum normal temperature. He reckons his is usually above 37 more like 37.6. His temperature today is 38 but he says he’s not unwell. He’s ordered himself a test.

My DDs temp is 37.4 every time we take it.

Terracottasaur · 30/12/2020 03:09

I have the opposite - my average temperature is about 36.5

My understanding is that 38 or higher is almost always indicative of illness.

housemdwaswrong · 30/12/2020 03:15

I think it's perfectly normal. I'm low at 35.5 usually. If they took my temp and it was 37 I could very well have covid (I'd be amazed I was still standing up but hey:) )

I definitely think he could run naturally high and not feel unwell or all that warm at 38.

My temperature is naturally low. I feel unwell when my temperature Is technically at the higher range of normal (ie 37.6).

EagleFlight · 30/12/2020 04:09

His temperature isn’t high, it’s normal. 37.8c to 37.9c is an elevated temperature and 38c is a low grade fever.

OzziePopPop · 30/12/2020 04:26

He’s normal.

My DH runs low, around 36 as standard. I run average at 37.5 + but can run around 39 when my autoimmune condition flares like others on here.

The most logical explanation is that most home thermometers are garbage. They regularly over read. I’ve seen parents bring their (reasonably well-looking) kids into the emergency department because their temp was measured at 42 degrees at home and they have to be convinced it was an error.

PoppinTheCorn · 30/12/2020 08:08

I have my temp taken at the beginning and end of each workday and it averages at around 38.4 - 38.7.
I'm in good health with no underlying issues
My doctor did tell me although that menopausal women often read around 2 degs higher than average, so I just put it down to that.
