Leonidas chocolate

Dh bought me a large box of leonidas chocolates as part of my Christmas present & they are absolutely delicious!
I'm eating some now with a cup of tea & was just thinking how nice they are. I would prefer a couple of these than a huge tub of other chocolates.
We've done v well this year & resisted the temptation to buy roses or QS for the sake of tradition
Dd got tony chocolonely & Lindt in her stocking.

We have a box. I find it very confusing because there's a big fold out list of the chocolates, but they aren't all in the box. So then you have to look in the box at one, and try to find it in all the millions listed, and a lot of them look the same. Also tons of them are coffee flavour which I hate.

The one I've had tasted nice though!

caperplips · 28/12/2020 20:10

@BessMarvin - I had the same thing - huge 'menu' but lots of the chocolates just in my first layer weren't even on the menu! I threw it away & I'm eating them lucky dip style

Ah the manon ones are heavenly. I don't normally like white chocolate, but I make an exception for them. We used to have a shop locally, but it closed a while back. Probably a good thing so they stay special.

evilharpy · 28/12/2020 21:10

There's a Leonidas shop in a little shopping arcade in Liverpool St near the station. I'm sure it's been there for years.

TheSilentStars · 28/12/2020 21:14

Sign up to Leonidas online and you get offers and everything!
I lived in Brussels in 86-87 and lived on Leonidas. I also survived a 20 hour train journey from Brussels to Western Spain on just a fresh cream ballotin.
Happy days. Grin

Leonidas are my absolute favourites. DH lived in Belgium when we were dating and he always used to buy them for me. Far better than Godiva in my opinion.

SarahAndQuack · 28/12/2020 21:53

Too sweet IMO. But I remember loving the novelty of them when my dad first brought some back.

I miss decent quality, affordable chocolate!

katy1213 · 28/12/2020 21:56

Love Leonidas chocolate orange peel.

Pennina · 28/12/2020 21:59

Love them, was gutted when the shop in my town closed. But! It seems you can buy them online Grin

RosesAndHellebores · 28/12/2020 22:00

I'm sure I bought Leonidas in the very early 80s from Selfridges. I very much like a Fortum's box of truffles too.

DuzzyFuck · 28/12/2020 22:00

There's a Leonidas near us and they're gorgeous. I got a small box as a thank you gift recently and made them last 2 weeks Smile

dontgobaconmyheart · 28/12/2020 22:14

Oh they're my favourite OP, I ordered a box for myself for xmas.

We had a shop in my town when I was little (some 25 years ago!) and I'd go often with my mum on weekends where we'd treat ourselves to a small box. One of the tube stations on London also has a little shop can't remember which but I used to frequent it on payday back when I worked in the city.

Nowadays they're a birthday and christmas treat but they're gorgeous. As you say, they're so rich and lovely I'd rather have two or three of them than I would a box of something cheaper.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 28/12/2020 22:20

Thanks to this thread I’ve gone and ordered myself a box of Manon blancs and Manon cafes. You can all chip in for my bariatric surgery.

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/12/2020 22:29

Just get them delivered.

You can order online at www.chocolate-express.co.uk/

I've ordered quite a lot over the last few years. Blush I'm addicted to Manon Cafe and milk Chocolate Lingots.

caperplips · 28/12/2020 22:30

Very glad to be an enabler Grin

Dh used to work in London and would buy me leonidas for birthdays etc and because I'm very fussy about my chocolate it was great. Now he has to buy online and my current MASSIVE box only had 1 caramel in it. 3 rogue milk chocolate ones got in too which i donated to dh.

My only gripe really is that my homemade chocolate dipped orange peel is better than theirs. Otherwise I am very glad that they sell online! I get a box 2 or 3 the a year (Christmas, birthday, mothering Sunday) and it is bloody lovely.

billy1966 · 28/12/2020 22:54

The gold wrapped praline.
The white chocolate coffee fresh cream.
The milk/dark chocolate fresh cream.
Truly delicious.
Well worth trying and a fantastic gift.

scrivette · 28/12/2020 22:59

Ohh I haven't ever heard of them, I feel that it's something that I must try.

Barmbraic · 28/12/2020 23:00

caperplips I'm a huge fan of leonidas, I thinknyou can order them online here now? But have you tried Truffle Fairy, based in kilkenny but sell at markets? Beyond exquisite.

MaryBerrysChutney · 28/12/2020 23:00

Way too sweet for me now. Used to love it when I was in my teens.

caperplips · 28/12/2020 23:09

@Barmbraic I have never heard of truffle fairy but will definitely watch out for them now - thanks!
I've already googled neuhaus Chocolates & will be trying them next! So thanks to all for the recommendations

Oh haven't had Leonidas chocolate for years, when I used to work in London and my boss would buy it for me. Now I want Leonidas!!

mynameiscalypso · 28/12/2020 23:31

@Misandrylovescompany

Rococo Chocolates is always my answer on these threads. Never found anything better. Have won over all family and friends who thought they knew what the best chocolate was. They were all wrong. Try it, you won’t regret it.
My local high street has a Leonidas and a Rococo. I am never going to be short of chocolate options 👍🏻
whysorude · 28/12/2020 23:34

Jaysus OP, I hope you brought enough to share with everyone.
( didn't get to Dublin so no Leonidas this Christmas Xmas SadXmas SadXmas Sad)

thegcatsmother · 28/12/2020 23:45

I returned from 13 years in Belgium last year, and Leonidas are OK. Neuhaus are the best by a long chalk; Pierre Marcolini if money is no object and you have a well developed palate to discern the differences between different types of plain chocolate.

Galler are good too; not so keen on Cornet Royale. I love the Cafe-Tasse squares and bars, and the Galler bars, especially the Croustillante and the Piedmontais. I had €38 of Carrefour vouchers to spend before we moved back to UK; I blew the lot on Galler bars.

For every day eating in bars, Milka is very good, as is Ritter Sport. Lindt is also very good; I still have some hidden from my last trip to Vienna.

I recently found bars of plain Godiva with nuts in B&M of all places. It keeps dh away from my Lindt.
