Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

But Spaniards are white like Celts. Just darker eyes and hair!

Depends on area. I know 2 Spanish people with blue eyes. The majority I’ve met have darker skin tone than northern Europeans, directly related to the climate, I imagine, although there is an area of northern Italy where many people are blond and blue eyed. goes off down google rabbit hole Ooh, Germanic invasion explains the blue eyes and more prevalent in Sicily and Sardinia.

NewyearNewme2021 · 28/12/2020 18:59
@NewyearNewme2021 I guess there’s a hierarchy: White British, white European/white other, then other ethnicities. So you’re not quite a POC in the literal sense, but you’re also not a native white Brit. I think Spaniards would be considered one of the more “acceptable” Europeans though, people from Poland or Romania are likely to experience more xenophobia although they generally look white British.
I certainly think East Europeans treated like second class citizens in the UK. But it would say it nationality not skin colour. Because as you point out, Spaniards, East Europeans and British don't have a different colour

All white skin nationalities vary a bit in tone and shade, but you can usually tell they European white as opposed to middle eastern or Asian is what am saying. Not that it should make a difference, we are all human.

I just think this must mean that race is a social construct. Ethnicity is real but race must be a distinction people make? Because the idea of deciding who is coloured or not doesn't seem to make biological sense at all when you consider a Black Irish or Southern Celt will have same colour skin as someone from Sicily or Malta in many cases and Japanese people tend to have whiter skin than many British

NewyearNewme2021 · 28/12/2020 19:09

I just think black and white and brown are bogus categories your average White British person will usually be a 57 Heinz of many DNA and if you look at a very homogenous British going back many generations town you will see white, pink, sallow, light olive etc tones and hair will probably be wavy or curly or straight and range from black to yellow. because to be British means to have mixed DNA anyway. Probably the majority will have wavy hair which is a
Shade of brown or blue or grey eyes but there will be variations.

Pretty much everything boils down to a social construct

Not so sure about sex but that is for another thread!

calls for being "kind" and don't mention the "truth" are dystopian

This x1000. Ever since Caroline Flack's suicide this stupid mantra has been overused and used in unsuitable contexts. Holding people to account isn't unkind. Stating the facts isn't unkind, although some may find it uncomfortable. There probably is a good reason for that. I automatically ignore the "#bekind" brigade through its common lack of ability to recognise the above.

Fizzydrinks123 · 28/12/2020 19:26

Won't be much chance of "socially constructing" a baby - only a sperm and an egg will create a baby and both are produced by one or other of the sexes.

So no, not everything is a social construct.

Yes we are part of the human race and male or female, these things are not constructs.

I could never understand why that hashtag came about over the suicide of a woman who was alleged to have abused her boyfriend . My sympathies are with the boyfriend.
NewyearNewme2021 · 28/12/2020 19:29

Abuse is abuse and domestic violence just as devastating as child sexual abuse in its effects but while Jimmy Savile was rightfully vilified. People turned Caroline flack into a martyr. Not me. One less abuser I won't shed any tears over

Agreed. It sadly isn't difficult to find disgraceful comments online about EE citizens coming from Brits. It really isn't acceptable and Brexit stirred up a shitstorm. Hopefully these awful attitudes gradually disappear over time.

Also the British do not consider Europeans "POC", what? Where did this come from?

Nowaynothappening · 28/12/2020 20:07

She said she was born in Spain and moved to the US when she was 19, Alec told Letterman his wife was ‘Spanish’ in a 2013 interview. She went as far as giving her DC Spanish names. She’s actually an American called Hillary Thomas who went on holiday to Spain a lot as a kid.

I remember her claiming not to know who Alec was before she met him, she said she didn’t watch many films and had spent a lot of time in Spain. She definitely knew who Alec was and how much money he had in the bank.

@TatianaBis

Arguably if you can self-identify as a different gender you can self-identify as anything.
Her preferred pronoun is 'señorita'
BabblativeBean · 28/12/2020 20:39
@NewyearNewme2021 English people consider the Spanish and other Europeans as “POC” too. If you’re not a native of this country, you’re “othered”. I don’t see why America would be different
I am not refuting your or other communities experiences Vitaminsss, but being regarded as ‘POC’ by English people isn’t something that my (Southern European) family/community is aware of. Can I ask what are you basing this statement upon?

YANBU, it's weird and wrong. An insecurity maybe? Like not thinking she's interesting enough without this "story"? Doesn't justify it, but maybe could explain "why"

nickymanchester · 28/12/2020 20:45

The thing with her specifically saying now that she is "white" is that, for many Americans, yes, Spanish people are seen as being Hispanic.

Hispanic is a term that is used in the USA to cover a broad range of people from south and central America and, crucially, also any other Spanish culture regardless of race.

So, yes, many Americans do perceive Spanish people to be hispanic.

This is further confounded by the fact that on the US census, being hispanic is a separate thing to ethnicity. So there is one question on hispanic/non-hispanic and a separate question on ethnicity eg white/black/mixed etc.

So, for example, a person in the USA could be "black hispanic" or they could be "black non-hispanic".

Hilary was admitting that she was "white". What she saying was shorthand for being "white non-hispanic".

Whereas a lot of Americans would say that Spanish people are "white hispanic" or simply just "hispanic" which is often perceived in the USA as being different from "white" (non-hispanic)

CorianderQueen · 28/12/2020 20:50

Its a bit like Rita Ora pretending to be black

user1471565182 · 28/12/2020 20:52

To be fair to Rita Ora shes that dumb I think she just started pretending to be black and has forgotten she isnt now

user1471565182 · 28/12/2020 20:53

HeronLanyon · 28/12/2020 20:54

The fact her name is so close to hilarious keeps making me laugh - seems appropriate ?

HeronLanyon · 28/12/2020 20:55

Or rather her Spanish name.

user1471565182 · 28/12/2020 20:59

Yeah british people dont consider europeans as black or POC. Thats complete nonsense

user1471565182 · 28/12/2020 20:59

Unless they come from a black background obviously

pinfloy · 28/12/2020 22:07

@SnowyOwlWan
More difficult I think, even though the two languages are similar, she spoke unbelievably good Danish in The Royal Affair

Just googled, she sounds like a Swedish person speaking Danish, very definitely not Danish (far too nice sounding to be Danish!)
