About leftovers

We had a nice local butcher joint of beef for Xmas lunch.
Yesterday we had leftover cold slices of beef with bubble and squeak. Today I told DH that I was going to make something with the leftovers (about 400/500g). I gave him the option of stew or a pasta dish. He said he didn’t want stew.

Spend hour or so making a ragu. Serve at lunchtime. DH “Is this the Xmas beef?”
Me: “Yes, that’s the last of it.”
DH: “Wow I would have expected to have it sliced or something.”
Me: “What? I told you I was making pasta.”
DH: “No, I just said I didn’t want stew.”
DH to kids: “Enjoy this kids, it will be the most expensive pasta you ever have. There’s about £30 of beef there”. (not true btw)

Am I wrong to have made it into a ragu?
Am I wrong to be really annoyed off at his comments?
Argh.

What mainly strikes me is your DH criticising you in front of the kids. Not on. At all.

But yeah, I would agree w him that bBoxing day is usually cold cuts, and that’s the best use of an expensive left over joint.

However, you went to a lot of trouble so he should have saved that thought for 11 and a half months, and said it when you are planning next year.

Nandocushion · 27/12/2020 16:07

He sounds like he was rude but I agree I'd rather have it cold sliced or even in a sandwich. I can't get my head around taking cooked roast beef and then cooking it even more?

SilkyMoonfaceandTheSaucepanMan · 27/12/2020 16:07

Just wondered what everyone agreeing with OP's DH would do with the beef then?

I have a bit left over, nice cut too. I was looking at a Korean rice dish or similar.

Is that a waste then?

BestOfABadLot · 27/12/2020 16:08

It really isn't relevant whether OP's meal choice was the best use of cold meat. It's down to personal taste and how many days in a row you can bare to eat cold meat. DH had an opportuntiy to make his preferences known but chose not to, nor did he offer to do the cooking himself or suggest alternatives. Once OP has gone to the time and effort to make the meal it's bloody rude to start complaining about it, especially in front of the kids.

Beamur · 27/12/2020 16:10

Probably not the point of the thread but I think Ragu from decent beef would be delicious

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/12/2020 16:10

Probably best not to mention to him that you also added the last bottle of 2005 Château Margaux.
He'll only moan about not using up that bottle of Piat d'Or that he opened earlier in the year for your birthday. Smile

namechangefail2020 · 27/12/2020 16:16

I would have made sandwiches with mustard and tomato, so the most expensive sandwich you can ever have. He's a tool

ErrolTheDragon · 27/12/2020 16:22

You've never heard of cottage/shepherds pie? That's the traditional way to use leftover roast beef and lamb.

OPs DH should have asked her to save him a slice or two of cold beef if that's what he wanted. And he shouldn't have made sulky snide remarks about the cost.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/12/2020 16:23

But yeah, I would agree w him that bBoxing day is usually cold cuts,

Which is what they had, on Boxing Day.

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 27/12/2020 16:26

YANBU.
Cold roast beef is fine once but boring for a second day.
My go-to recipe for this would be Beef Stifado.

SilkyMoonfaceandTheSaucepanMan · 27/12/2020 16:26

Yes, that's what I thought. That's why I asked up thread what others would do, as I was planning to do similar to OP. Confused

Thewindsofchange · 27/12/2020 16:27

It boils my blood when dh does that 'Oh, I thought you'd have done XYZ'. Fecking tell me that beforehand then. I'm not a bloody mindreader!!

Sympathies OP.

Spittingchestnuts · 27/12/2020 16:29

YANBU I wouldn't personally make roast beef leftovers in to a pasta dish BUT you've had it cold once and you have the DC to consider and he who wants something different is always free to volunteer to cook it himself.

Michaelbaubles · 27/12/2020 16:33

3rd-day meat leftovers are better cooked IMO, you’ve had it sliced hot for the first meal, then sliced cold, the sight of another slice of meat starts to depress me after that so for that reason alone YANBU.

They’d already had the traditional “leftovers” meal so it’s fair game to do anything you want with it after that.

autumnkate · 27/12/2020 16:33

I often cook leftovers in a new dish. My mother always made left over beef into cottage pie. I don’t think it’s strange.

Anyway, I told him I was feeling rather hurt by his comments, and he did his usual denial of wrong doing but then came back about 20 mins later and apologised for being rude.

Totally agree with Lola, and @OppsUpsSide expressed it beautifully on the bottom of P1. Cardo , you have made yourself look a bit silly on this thread.

So, to go back to the opening post, I would prefer a quality joint of meat's leftovers, sliced cold myself even setting aside the fact that it is less work , but he sounds like he needs to put his brain in gear before opening his mouth.

Mamagotskills · 27/12/2020 17:07

He’d hate the pie I just made with all the leftover turkey, ham, pigs & stuffing. There probably is £30 of meat in that, not that anyone would have paid £30
For It in its current state so bit of a moot point there

MrsToothyBitch · 27/12/2020 17:15

You gave him an either or and - typical bloke, he didn't listen properly. YANBU.

Surely once you've had the roast itself, the point of an expensive joint is to not waste an expensive joint and putting it in something else to continue the deliciousness is getting your moneys worth! A ragu sounds delicious. I'd have chucked it in beef goulash soup immediately myself- I dislike cold cuts. Your DH would've done his nut!

ikltownofboothlehem · 27/12/2020 17:32

We're having the Boxing Day beef later on oven bottom barms with mayo & ground salt because that's what we fancy. I might not have made a raging but I bet yours is bloody delicious.

ikltownofboothlehem · 27/12/2020 17:35

Ragu, not raging Grin

Well said. It's a bit annoying that he decided to pass comment after, but not the end of the world.

In answer to the question what others would have done. I rarely buy beef joints and when I do it's one that does the main meal, sometimes with some cold cuts for lunch or sandwiches the following day. I don't think a beef roasting joint lends itself to being cooked more than once.

Glad you're all sorted OP.

steppemum · 27/12/2020 18:00

well, if my dh had said that I would have been tempted to put his in the bin. Particularly his passive agressive comments to kids.

Personally, if something is coooked for you, the only response is Thank You.

I wouldn't want sliced beef 3 days running.

I do same with turkey.
roast day 1
cold with fried up veg day 2
then I use it for something else. Today we are having an Indonesian curry dish using the turkey. I did do turkey and stuffing and cranberry sauce toasties for lunch. We have fully appreciated the meat on its own. Now I'll make it into a curry and that will be the last of it.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 27/12/2020 18:22

Sounds like a good use of leftovers with the cold beef yesterday and then cooking it up today in a Ragu when it has sat in the fridge for two days.
If my dh made me a lovely pasta ragu I would just say thank you!

LondonStone · 27/12/2020 19:04

YANBU. You made a nice ragu with three-day-old beef. Presumably the beef is primarily bought for Christmas Day, on Boxing Day you had cold leftovers, and on day 3 you made a pasta - not the end of world. I think it sounds lovely anyway, OP. Ragu shouldn’t be made with mince imo so nothing wrong with using a nice bit of leftover beef.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/12/2020 19:39

We had leftover pork today just sliced in oven and cooked in gravy with a bit of mash & peas cooked by dh
None if us moaned as we didn't want cold pork again
Plus he cooked it and if I wanted another way i could of a ) said b ) cooked it myself
