To expect dog walkers to keep their giant dogs on leash around other peiple

Thewithesarehere · 27/12/2020 12:52

I am still quite sick after seeing a dog, nearly my DC’s size, running after my DC knocking them to the ground and running over them.
DC is covered in mud. I was taking a picture of them running to me and it happened in a flash. I shouted at the dog owner who something like put your own children on leash.
Why the hell people don’t keep such huge dogs and then let them off leash in a public park around children? DV is covered in mud, shivering and complaining that their leg hurts where it hit a rock and that they are scared of dogs. I wish I had done more but don’t know what else I could have done.
AIBU in feeling bloody furious?

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 it's dependent on the type of national trust property many don't allow dogs, none allow dogs into formal gardens/walled gardens and some only allow in woodland/parkland areas.

Majority of people obey no dog beaches but there are usually time and month exemptions - usually outwith summer season or have sections where the dogs are allowed.

VinylDetective · 28/12/2020 11:39

@Ritasueandbobtoo9

The National Trust have started letting in dogs though - and encouraging them. No dog beaches - always full of dogs. There is no escape any more.
The NT only allows dogs on lead - just what you all maintain you want. Many beaches don’t allow dogs in the summer.

There’s plenty of “escape”. If you used those places you’d have nothing to moan about though.

Yohoheaveho · 28/12/2020 11:42

Just go to places where dogs aren't allowed
But there aren't any☹️
besides I don't want to be relegated, I want to go to the nice scenic places where it's enjoyable to run or cycle or walk
Sadly all the best outdoor places are being ruined by increasing numbers of dogs☹️

You seem to think evil dog owners are going out of their way to upset you and there’s some kind of vendetta going on.
What a pointless point! I said this only because I am thinking of the worst case scenarios and we were discussing the legalities of various scenarios. People have mentioned on this thread that they wear body cams. If one dog owner can shout at me to keep my children on leash when it was their dog that ran up to us, then there is definitely a possibility of other as bad or worse owners.
I wouldn’t want to be hit by a bill from their vet and do not want to have to wear body camera.

Dogs off lead at Attingham Park in the children’s playground.

Dogs off lead on beaches where it clearly says no dogs allowed.

Local playground / park - dogs - clearly says no dogs allowed.

Basically many dog owners just ignore rules and just carry on regardless. This thread proves that despite people telling their lived experiences that many dog owners will just not accept that there are many out of control dogs and many irresponsible dog owners.

they don't need to go out of their way.... they just follow their natural selfish instincts to put their dog above all other people!🤬
Not to mention their natural lazy instincts to not bother to train the dog!🤬

You’re the one who’s paranoid about dog owners filming you so it’s not a groundless comment.

@underneaththeash

OP - you get your foot in the air and kick any dog that jumps up at your child....it makes me really angry. You wouldn't accept another mammal (including a human) knocking over your child, but some people think it's acceptable that a dog can do that. My poor daughter was floored a couple of times and developed a dog phobia.

We actually do have a dog now, it's exceptionally well trained.

Kicking a dog is a near surefire way to end up with a dog bite, as the dog will try and defend itself from being kicked.
Yohoheaveho · 28/12/2020 12:14

Many irresponsible dog owners
I think the majority (as in over 50%) of dog owners are good, decent, responsible, 'prosocial' types of people.
the problem is that the antisocial, irresponsible, 'bad' dog owners are much more visible because they have a bigger impact, and because they tend to have multiple dogs!
Furthermore I think there may be an element of animal hoarding with some of these types, if dysfunctional people choose to have multiple pets .....there are going to be bad outcomes 😖

What's the best way to respond to a dog which is attacking you then?

Define attacking.

Does it bother people that dogs are allowed into pubs and such as well?

Kaliorphic · 28/12/2020 12:20

I think one child came up my dog in the whole of her life and tried to pet her. The child was about 2. It's the only time. It's not a regular occurrence at all. Now if I was to list the amount of dogs that had jumped up at me, knocked my kids over, gone for my dog. Well, it's a much longer list that's for sure. Seriously, if you know your dog is going to approach other people, kids, dogs, then just keep it on the lead. It really isn't that difficult.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 28/12/2020 12:21

YANBU. Precious dog owners are the worst kind of people

Yes. A couple of years ago I ended up nursing a waitress' bleeding nose after she tripped over a dog who suddenly jumped across the room, lead still on, as she was carrying my fajitas which ended up all over the floor. The dog owner shouted at her for hurting her dog Hmm I got a new meal but said to the owner this is why dogs don't belong in pubs
mbosnz · 28/12/2020 12:23

With a dog rushing at me, and I do not know the dog (or at my kid), I have found a good strong firm voice, with 'get down!!!!', often discourages them, followed up by, 'come and get your dog please, I don't want him'.

With kids coming up to my dog unwantedly, I find the same method equally effective.

I don't have to put up with anyone's Bouncer, Bruiser or Fluffy, nor do I have to put up with anyone's Ollie, Molly, or Tilly, near me and mine.

And where they shouldn't be selfish dog owners take their "fur babies" anyway

If they sit there quietly not bothering anyone else then no. Although it does remind me of the time when I took my mum for lunch in a pub, as soon as the food was delivered to us some dog walked up (Irish wolfhound type thing) and plonked its head on the table right next to our plates. So yeah, that was nice, not. I like dogs, but shit dog owners give everyone else a bad name.

LakieLady · 28/12/2020 12:27

@Ritasueandbobtoo9

I have never seen any children randomly running after dogs and pulling their tails - Stop trying to deflect blame onto children - it’s manipulative and gas lighting behaviour, the kind of behaviour that abusers use to deflect from their actions. This thread is about an unprovoked attack in a park.
Sadly, some children behave appallingly around dogs.

My first dog was brilliant around children, so I was horrified when he snapped at a child in a pub (he'd been fast asleep under the table until that point). Someone then told me that the child had crawled under the table and tried to stick a straw up the nose of my sleeping dog.

My last dog wasn't keen on children and ignored them. I had to stop taking her to family gatherings at MIL's because one of DP's nieces wouldn't leave the dog alone, even when she'd crawled under furniture and into an inaccessible corner to get away from her and go to sleep. The child's parents would not ask their child to leave the dog alone, despite having had 2 toy breeds that bit their own children several times.

There are arseholes like that every where, I'm afraid.

wewillmeetagain · 28/12/2020 12:31

I have a french bulldog and an English bulldog. I would never trust the Frenchie off the lead because he runs away, has terrible recall and jumps up at people. My English bulldog however is the complete opposite and I always take him off the lead.

Rural publicans tend to be very much in favour of dogs in pubs, because so much of their trade is dog walkers. And a lot of rural pubs are so keen to encourage them that they hand out dog treats. I even know of one that keeps a stash of old towels for wet/muddy dogs.
LST · 28/12/2020 12:32

@glummy so one bad experience?

LST · 28/12/2020 12:38

@LakieLady our dog loves the pub. Our local town is ace for dogs the only pub they can't go in is wetherspoons and I don't want to go there anyway! Many eateries and cafes allow them in now too. Obviously some idiots ruin it by taking a barky misbehaved dog.

Every dog owner on this thread has said the same thing...... That there are bad dog owners in life but this isn't every dog owner.

Just like there are bad parents who neglect children by no means does it mean the majority of parents neglect their children.

Public spaces are for sharing with a wide variety of users be that dog walkers, people with children, cyclists.

Like I tell my toddler learn to share!

Lockdownlumpy · 28/12/2020 12:46

This makes me really angry.
My eldest was knocked to the ground by two off lead Highland terriers when he was a toddler. They both leapt up at him at thr same time - they were playing not being aggressive but my child didn't know that. 6 years later and he is still scared of dogs. He hides behind me and freezes if an off lead dog approaches.
Really annoyingly dog owners seem not to understand this and let their dog jump ar and sniff him despite him obviously trying to hide due to being scared and they just laugh and say "oh don't worry, he's friendly".

Also, wtf do dog owners think they are doing letting a dog covered in mud jump up on a stranger?!? I don't have anything against dogs, but I definitely don't want your dogs filthy paws all over my clothes!!
