(Lighthearted!) Thanks for this DH. In the almost 20 years LOTRs has been out, I have never once bought any merchandise (despite how much I love it!), I regularly have clear outs, don’t have tat and ornaments or clutter anywhere. Our house is modern and this is oldy worldly. It doesn’t fit at all!

I have a “safe” list of stuff that always goes down well. Or I could have suggested something I would use. Photo frames, Mac make up, etc

Therein lies your mistake. Some people's taste or idea of "homely" consists of putting as many things up on the wall as possible. If you have souvenirs from holidays or those massive family photo canvas prints then that's even better. They probably look at your bare walls in horror and think "ooh that looks so plain and empty" and think they're doing you a favour by exerting their taste on yours with a "nice picture"!

I completely agree! I do actually like cluttered/eclectic houses, they’re very cosy and homely, it’s just we have a 1970s modernist house and went with a style that tied in with the architecture. Definitely not to everyone’s taste, but we love it.
