What a load of old tat!

(Lighthearted!) Thanks for this DH. In the almost 20 years LOTRs has been out, I have never once bought any merchandise (despite how much I love it!), I regularly have clear outs, don’t have tat and ornaments or clutter anywhere. Our house is modern and this is oldy worldly. It doesn’t fit at all!

I have a “safe” list of stuff that always goes down well. Or I could have suggested something I would use. Photo frames, Mac make up, etc

What a load of old shite GrinGrinGrin

*I spent a couple of orbiting it once.

That should be a couple of hours.

Aria999 · 26/12/2020 01:46

I like it!

Jimdandy · 26/12/2020 08:44

@titbumwillypoo I disagree. If he paid attention he’d know that I don’t have stuff like this. I’ve loved LOTR for the whole time we’ve been together (over 11 years) so why I’d suddenly decide I would like this I don’t know 😀😀

Not the end of the world it was only £20 but I would have loved a box of continentals instead!

I can sympathise, I absolutely hate ‘stuff’, I only like stuff that has a place and a purpose for the house as it’s already filled to the rafters with toys for my daughter so I really can’t stand any more stuff.

My MIL is amazing and I love her dearly but she is like magpie and literally gives us boxes crammed full of pointless stuff for Christmas. She’s got this weird idea that I’m a devoted Harry Potter fan and always buys me Harry Potter themed gifts. This year it was another Harry Potter notebook to go with last years unused one and a Harry Potter wine glass. I don’t know where she’s got this idea I’m a super fan from at all😂 I’ve seen the films like once once or twice. Along with about 10 other completely strange gifts that are just not me at all! I obviously always accept graciously and I’m so grateful she’s so thoughtful but I HATE STUFF and I don’t want anymore of it in my house😂

Well you need to hurry up, we’re almost out of Europe.

Mk has many roundabouts, that's because it's a planned town built on a grid system, like many American towns, but it has roundabouts at each horizontal and vertical intersection. This means the traffic moves freely and quickly and there are many ways to reach your destination. You can drive from one side to the other in seven minutes. Can you do that in your town? Plastic cows. Please. A, they are some concrete monuments to the dozens of farms that surround and are in mk. It's a very rural area. There are redways that are cycle and walking routes that cover the entire town. You can cross mk on these and never cross a road. Perfect for children. The housing areas are designed so that each has its own identity, and all are shielded from the v and h roads by trees. It houses bletchley park, Wolverton railway works and many old villages and towns.
The jokes were made in an era when new was different, progressive was suspicious and othering was the highest form of comedy. I wonder if I'd I would get away with slating anywhere based on the words concrete and roundabouts? Oh, and please clarify, what exactly is a communal carpark? Do you have a carpark to yourself then?

TheSockMonster · 26/12/2020 09:08

DH and I are quite particular about what goes on our walls and lean towards a minimalist aesthetic. We have whole walls with nothing on them to better showcase art on adjacent walls.

Without fail, for the first 6-8 years we lived together we’d receive twee/shabby chic canvases, framed prints and wall hangings for Christmases and birthdays. The fact we never once put them up did not seem to deter the well-meaning gifters, although it did tail off eventually.

By the tine dd hits around 7 and all her friends get in to Harry Potter at least you'll have enough supplies to regift to never have to buy a birthday present for several years 😆

RaspberryCoulis · 26/12/2020 09:18

We bought something very similar for geeky teenage DS. He LOVES it.

Your DH has obviously bought it because you like Lord of he Rings. And who says your house has to be modern or olde-worlde?

queenMab99 · 26/12/2020 09:24

You are definitely being unreasonable if you think that Lord of the Rings has only been out for 20 years, it was published in the 50s.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 26/12/2020 09:32

I love the map, and DH bought me the Evenstar pendant a few years ago.

@Squidwitch if it helps, DS wants to live in Milton Keynes when he's older, though in his case it's not so much the lure of woodlands and shoreline as the lure of the Red Bull Racing factory.

GabsAlot · 26/12/2020 09:41

i got a talking toy cat from my aunt-yes i like cats but im 45

DameCelia · 26/12/2020 09:53

I'm really confused by the shoreline in MK, I didn't think there was any sea there?!

Jimdandy · 26/12/2020 10:20

@queenMab99 it’s quite clear I meant the films.

@RaspberryCoulis I say MY house has to be either, because it’s MY house Grin

queenMab99 · 26/12/2020 10:25

Squidwitch · 26/12/2020 10:28

Motorsport and tech are very good in mk, I hope your son does come! :) Milton Keynes has an extensive network of canals, waterways and lakes is what I meant by shoreline, to clarify. Tbh quite a chunk of it does seem to be underwater at present...

donquixotedelamancha · 26/12/2020 10:42

The jokes were made in an era when new was different, progressive was suspicious and othering was the highest form of comedy.

Thank goodness you live somewhere so relaxing, otherwise you might get wound up by them.

IMNOTSHOUTING · 26/12/2020 10:44

To be fair does DH actually like you having clear outs and making your house 'modern'. Lots of people hate living like that - I couldn't stand it, I like a house to have a it of character.

donquixotedelamancha · 26/12/2020 10:44

Also, it's not too far to the delightful beaches of Near Hard.

donquixotedelamancha · 26/12/2020 10:45

*Near Harad.

DameCelia · 26/12/2020 10:53

@donquixotedelamancha of course!! I forgot those.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/12/2020 11:03

@TheSockMonster We have whole walls with nothing on them to better showcase art on adjacent walls.

Therein lies your mistake. Some people's taste or idea of "homely" consists of putting as many things up on the wall as possible. If you have souvenirs from holidays or those massive family photo canvas prints then that's even better. They probably look at your bare walls in horror and think "ooh that looks so plain and empty" and think they're doing you a favour by exerting their taste on yours with a "nice picture"!

I do think things like home decor stuff and clothes are not great presents unless you've requested something very specific. Invariably the clothes don't quite fit or aren't what you would have picked for yourself and then you're stuck with something that you won't use/needs taking to the charity shop.

I didn't have much money to buy myself new clothes when the kids were little and inlaws probably thought they were being kind buying me clothing items as presents. I would MUCH rather have had money or vouchers and offered to babysit so I could have gone out and actually chosen something for myself. But they don't think vouchers are a proper present as they're not thoughtful enough. But for MY situation then, they woujld have been the most thoughtful thing ever.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/12/2020 11:09

I'm sure Milton Keynes is very nice but if I wanted to try and big it up I would probably not try to compare man made waterways with the natural shoreline of the Channel Islands! It makes it seem like you're grasping at straws.

Keep this to yourself or everyone will want to live there. I love the sound of the cycle and foot paths. I also live in an area which is a bit of a long standing joke thanks to 70s and 80s comedians but couldn’t care less. I like it.
