To sleep in a 12 degree C bedroom?

My ex used to have the bedroom radiator on full whack; I'd overheat and have nightmares.

Dumped him, everything is better, but I'm now wondering if my cold-loving sleeping habits are eccentric. I do have a big pile of blankets and flannel PJs. I checked my security system (which has a temperature sensor) and realised it's 12 degrees in there. AI BU?

@Donotgogentle

Erm . . . but what about a warm bedroom for DTD?

Or does that have to be under the duvet too Grin

If you're doing it right, you'll soon warm up!
TirisfalPumpkin · 25/12/2020 12:25

In winter, you obviously do it on the rug in front of a roaring log fire?

Lots of good tips here Grin. Could always keep my socks on too I suppose.

Was shocked at how warm hotel rooms are kept in the UK

I agree with you. The first thing I do is open the window and turn the heating off if I can.

You can't open the window in many hotels, but each room has its own climate control. We always turn it down at night time (Premier Inn/Travel Lodge/Hilton)

Tell me about it! We once had a really embarrassing experience when DH tried to open a window and the whole massive window fell out into the room.

lilylongjohn · 25/12/2020 14:17

I turn the hearing off at night and will have a window cracked open, even when it's really cold outside. I get nightmares too if I'm too hot, and much prefer to snuggle under a warm duvet.

I set the heating to come on in the rest of the house just before I get up so I have a nice warm bathroom, kitchen etc

BatshitCrazyWoman · 25/12/2020 15:31

Sounds perfect to me. I like a cool bedroom. I've never had the heating on at night. In fact I don't put the heating on at all unless I'm cold (so it doesn't come on via a timer). I had it on for an hour this morning but that's it.

grassisjeweled · 25/12/2020 15:32

Totally fine

MispyM · 25/12/2020 17:02

I wouldn't complain about a warm bedroom, tbh.

There's sometimes a noticeable draft (more like a gust of wind) even with the windows closed.

There is heating but it's very old and not particularly effective (at all.). The large wood oven is nice and does heat up the kitchen and adjacent rooms.

The warmth seems to reach the bedrooms
if we keep the fire going for an extended amount of time. We manage to get it up to 15-16 degrees that way...

But we usually don't bother. So... ❄️🥶

Waveysnail · 25/12/2020 17:04

I never have radiator on in bedroom and keep the window open. Goes back to when kids were babies and I was paranoid they would over heat plus dh is stupidly warm in bed.

Frazzledme · 26/12/2020 01:23

12 is far too cold, hard to be anything but miserable at that temperature. I find heaps of blankets instead of one decent duvet uncomfortable. My in-laws house can be 12 degrees (yes they're upper middle class) and it's horrible.

QueenPawPaws · 26/12/2020 01:29

I love a cold room. But I have a wool duvet and then a patchwork blanket, weirdly I get cold even in summer but can't sleep in a heated room Confused

zukiecat · 26/12/2020 02:01

Having lived in a freezing cold house until we moved 18 months ago, and my bedroom usually -3 or -4, I now love to have a warm and cosy bedroom and house.

The thermostat is set at 24, we don't always put the heating on, but I'm not going to sit in a cold house or sleep in a cold bedroom if I don't have to.

steff13 · 26/12/2020 02:18

My local news is always sharing an article that says 62°F is the optimum sleeping temperature (16°C). You're not too much off from that.

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2020 02:40

I'm perfectly happy sleeping a cold bedroom. I never have the heating on overnight unless it's seriously cold. As long as my feet are warm, so am I.

Nat6999 · 26/12/2020 02:47

When I had a house I always slept with the bedroom window wide open all year round. Sadly I'm in a group floor flat now & can't do it. It always seems to go warm by 2.00am now.

bumblingbovine49 · 26/12/2020 03:33

I can't bear to get up in a cold bedroom in the morning so I could never turn my radiator off in the bedroom or I'd never get up in winterGrin

I also don't like to be cold at night so 12deg is way too cold for me in the bedroom

ChippyChickenChips · 26/12/2020 03:37

You’re all bonkers! Our heating kicks in if it goes below 18°, I’d prefer it to be 20! I’d freeze my bollocks off if it got down to 12...

I agree. In my bedroom in my house in the SE of England, the temp has never dipped below 17c. I have an aga on in the kitchen throughout the winter months and it permeates the whole house. We don't have a central heating system at all. No radiators anywhere. But it never gets as cold as pps are suggesting. I have a fan heater for emergencies but only gets used a couple of times a year in the coldest snap.

When it's icy outside, open a fucking window at your peril!!
Bloody lunacy. I do have hypothyroid gland though, so may feel the cold more than most. Hotty bottys are my best friends.

80sMum · 26/12/2020 03:43

Twelve degrees is not exceptionally cold for a bedroom, imo. During the coldest part of winter, mine is sometimes below 10 degrees. I have a 13.5 tog duvet and always take a hot water bottle to bed with me.

WanderingMilly · 26/12/2020 03:51

I have the window open all the time, even when it's frosty outside, and no heating on in the bedroom....it's far healthier for you to sleep in a cold room.

When I lived in northern Scandinavia it was quite normal, 12 degrees would have been considered far too hot and bad for the human system. As long as you yourself are warm under the duvet or whatever, the outside/room temperature can be as cold as you like. The coldest I have ever slept in a room is -7 degrees, it was the deepest and best sleep I have ever had!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 26/12/2020 04:20

I never have my bedroom radiator on, I get a headache if I sleep in a room with heating on Confused
I also sleep naked and with the window wide open all year. Love a cold bedroom!

To the PP who asked about sleeping in the summer, it's a nightmare! I have a fan on full blast, tempted to buy another one next year and have 2. Although I sleep naked I can't not have a duvet between my legs and have to have a fleecy blanket within touching distance to get anything even remotely close to a good night's sleep Hmm

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 26/12/2020 04:32

12....I wouldn’t be able to sleep in a room so cold. Our heating comes on at night if it goes below 20. If it’s really cold we just leave it on all night. I’m the day we often have it on 24, we like to be warm.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/12/2020 07:18

I love sleeping in a cold bedroom, but would want it warm by the time I wanted to get up and dressed.

Incompatibility over bedroom temperature is why I have moved more or less permanently into the spare bedroom. My husband likes it at least 3 degrees hotter than I do and keeps the heating on until he goes to bed. In the spare room I usually have the window open and the radiator is permanently turned off. The airing cupboard is in that room so if I do get cold I just open the airing cupboard door!

CaraDuneRedux · 26/12/2020 07:34

I can only sleep through the night without waking once the indoor temperature gets down to about 12 to 15 degrees. And that's with HRT, God knows what I'd be like without. I've been single for donkeys years, I honestly don't think I could share a bed with someone.
