Correct Christmas greeting

Should it be Merry Christmas not happy?

Isn’t it Merry Christmas and a happy new year?

Does this annoy anyone else?

Nope. Can be whatever you want.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year is in the song, but if you dictated greetings by songs then you'd get into a pickle pretty soon.

Oldsu · 25/12/2020 05:25

I have said Happy Christmas for over 60 years - not stopping now

GammyLeg · 25/12/2020 05:30

Genuinely couldn’t care less but given this is the second thread I’ve seen on this topic it seems you aren’t alone OP.

ShakespearesSisters · 25/12/2020 05:53

Yes, I dont know why but Happy Christmas sounds wrong. Its always been "Merry Christmas" so I can follow it with "and a happy new year" so I'm not saying happy twice. (Probably sang we wish you a merry Christmas too much as a kid and it stuck)

TheShapeJaper · 25/12/2020 05:56

In The Crown the queen says Happy Christmas 😄

FestiveChristmasLights · 25/12/2020 05:56

I always opt for Happy Christmas on its own or Merry Christmas and happy new year.

IamMariahScarey · 25/12/2020 06:19

People can say whatever they want.

ZaraW · 25/12/2020 06:22

I've always said Happy Christmas. Use whatever you like.

Justa47 · 25/12/2020 06:24

@ShakespearesSisters

Yeah

@TheShapeJaper

Well we know the crown isn’t real life. Haha

And that’s the point people don’t concentrate so not surprised the script writers messed up too!

@IamMariahScarey

Sure they can all I am saying is the appropriate phrase is Merry Christmas traditionally.

sparticuscaticus · 25/12/2020 06:32

You are right, it is supposed to be merry Xmas and happy new year. Tbh though I say happy Christmas and always forget about NY.

I wouldn't get annoyed about it! This really belongs in grammar/ pedant thread- you'll get much more sympathy there!!! Grin

ChessieFL · 25/12/2020 06:37

Yuletide Felicitations

FourEyesGood · 25/12/2020 06:37

I like ‘Happy Christmas’.

EuphieKat · 25/12/2020 06:39

I grew up thinking it was ‘Happy Christmas’ and that ‘Merry Christmas’ was more American.

Groundhogdayzz · 25/12/2020 06:44

My DD said this to me yesterday because I said Happy Christmas.....I’ve never even thought about it. She’s only 10!

zzizz · 25/12/2020 06:51

I vaguely remember reading or hearing that "Merry" has connotations of drinking, so "Happy" is the more straitlaced version.

There's a huge chance this was a dream of course Grin

Yugi · 25/12/2020 07:48

Pretty sure it’s the opposite. Merry relates to drunkenness and their Puritan ancestors did not approve
Ifailed · 25/12/2020 07:52

Who are you going to saying it to, I thought we were all supposed to be staying inside?

zzizz · 25/12/2020 07:58

I didn't dream it, hurrah!

AuntieMarys · 25/12/2020 07:59

Joyous Yuletide

Bluesername · 25/12/2020 08:13

Happy Christmas

Justa47 · 25/12/2020 08:36

@EuphieKat

Quiet the reverse actually

I grew up in America (New England) and it's always Merry Christmas. Never heard Happy Christmas there. Always thought Happy was an English thing. But cards often read 'Seasons Greetings' which i suppose covers all holidays celebrated around now but sounds very corporate.

Bluesername · 25/12/2020 09:17

I have a theory that it's because New Year is often mentioned on Christmas greetings cards, and no-one says 'Merry New Year'. So cards often say 'Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year'. I still prefer Happy Christmas though.
