Is a bottle of wine à shit gift?

Got a mate of mine a bottle of wine for Christmas - is it a shit gift? Should I have got her something more thoughtful? It's her favourite wine.

Just reading the thread about the Thortons chocs and it got me thinking

It’s a good all rounder if you know that person drinks and enjoys wine Smile I’d always be happy to receive a bottle!

It’s only a poor present if they don’t/can’t drink.

What I am trying to say is picking her favourite bottle/type is thoughtful. It shows you know her. Don't worry about it :)

SantasAnus · 24/12/2020 22:23

Well she drinks wine and you got her her favourite one.

That is not a shit gift. It's thoughtful because you have noted and chosen her favourite wine.

Now if she likes red wine and you bought her a bottle of Barefoot Jammy Red, she is allowed to hit you over the head with it 🤣

ToniTheDonkey · 24/12/2020 22:23

@NameChange84

If it’s their favourite then, no.

I get given alcohol mainly if anyone buys me a gift but I don’t drink and neither does anyone in my immediate family. The majority of people who gift me wine are completely aware I don’t drink and will hand it to me, wait for a big thank you and then say something along the lines of “well I know you don’t drink but you’ll find someone to give it to!”. That is shit and I’d honestly prefer it if they didn’t bother. Your case is pretty much the opposite, you’ve put thought into something she’d want.

I get that too. I’m very vocal about not drinking and the reasons behind it, so everyone knows I don’t drink, yet will give me wine. Love your comment about how you can give it away. Great, you’re giving me a “present” that you know I won’t use and are already suggesting I give away. I’d rather you saved time and just didn’t give me anything.
purplecorkheart · 24/12/2020 22:23

I would be delighted with a bottle of my favourite wine.

RosieTheHat · 24/12/2020 22:26

Nope. I would be happy with that. Shows you are thoughtful

Chanandlerbong01 · 24/12/2020 22:42

It depends on the person! My lovely sil buys me a bottle of wine and red lipstick every year, she usually comments on it being my signature look and knowing I like a glass of wine. I’ve not wore red lipstick in about 6 years and I only drink when I go out and she knows this.... I’m not offended by the gifts because she’s trying to be nice, but it’s been going on so long I don’t know how to ask her to stop without hurting her feelings.

ViciousJackdaw · 25/12/2020 01:49

I would be very happy to be given my favourite wine, chocolate, hand cream, anything really. I'd even be happy to get a pair of my favourite tights. A thoughtful gift that will be used, regardless of how little it cost, is priceless.

JamieLeesCurtains · 25/12/2020 01:53

I think it's good. It won't be wasted, it shows you thought about it.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 25/12/2020 01:56

You got something you know she likes. I’m sure it will be appreciated.

Merry Christmas 🎄

Hmm - it depends. If it was my exact favourite bottle, I'd be delighted. However, get the vineyard wrong and I'd be less impressed. I'm very fussy Grin
sbhydrogen · 25/12/2020 02:39

I'd love it if I got given a bottle of my favourite wine 🍷🥰

Cameleongirl · 25/12/2020 02:43

Agreeing with everyone, receiving a bottle of your favorite wine is lovely! As a PP said, anything that’s someone’s favorite (wine, chocs, hand cream, etc.) is great as they’ll definitely use it.

AfterSchoolWorry · 25/12/2020 02:43

A bottle of wine is a good gift!

Chocolates aren't great.

BoomBoomsCousin · 25/12/2020 03:26

I’d love a bottle of my favourite wine (but I’d also like Thornton’s chocolates).

Els1e · 25/12/2020 03:54

I’d rather have wine and chocolates.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 25/12/2020 07:32

Not in this house.

FuckOffDailyFailure · 25/12/2020 07:34

Favourite bottle of wine is possibly the best present!

SpeckledyHen · 25/12/2020 07:37

Absolutely perfect gift .She likes wine and it’s her favourite.I’d be happy if you were my friend.

MabelMoo23 · 25/12/2020 07:38

I like Sauvignon Blanc. If someone got me a bottle of really nice SVB like Cloudy Bay or Greywacke I would be over the bloody moon - as it’s something I wouldn’t buy myself

So yes, it a fave wine then definitely

Ginfordinner · 25/12/2020 07:49

@Pipandmum

It's a bit impersonal (it's what I give when I can't think of anything) but as it's her favourite I'm sure she'll appreciate it.
I disagree. I would much prefer a bottle of my favourite wine over yet more "stuff" that I have to find room for.
CarterBeatsTheDevil · 25/12/2020 07:55

I'm always happy with something to eat or drink.

PandemicPalava · 25/12/2020 08:06

A gift of my favourite wine would be considered thoughtful by me and I'd love it. Not shit at all

sparticuscaticus · 25/12/2020 08:07

@CiderJolly

If it’s her favourite wine then I think it’s a thoughtful gift.
