To say it’s Merry Christmas not Happy Christmas?

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2020 16:27

It irrationally annoys me when people say Happy Christmas.

Honeyroar · 24/12/2020 16:29

Why? I say both. They’re both expressing good wishes. Personally I’d rather be happy at Christmas than merry!

BiggerBoat1 · 24/12/2020 16:30

Can't it be either?

FoxyTheFox · 24/12/2020 16:31

Does it matter?

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2020 16:32

Sorry forgot the obligatory LIGHTHEARTED

It annoys me irrationally when people don't place their adverbs in end position.

(It doesn't really, and placing the adverb where the OP has is perfectly correct, as is Happy Christmas)

TheSilentStars · 24/12/2020 16:34

Course you did.

PurpleDaisies · 24/12/2020 16:35

Who cares?
Happy Christmas.

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 24/12/2020 16:35

I agree. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year. There are rules about these things.

FoxyTheFox · 24/12/2020 16:36

Happy Christmas, OP. The eye twitch it causes is my gift from me to you Grin

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2020 16:36

Jesus @TheSilentStars ! You make The Grinch look festive!

OP posts:
TuxedoPanther · 24/12/2020 16:36

Are you sure @MrsGrindah is the right spelling? Sounds more like you’re Mrs Grinch! LIGHTHEARTED Wink

katy1213 · 24/12/2020 16:37

I've just had someone wishing me happy holidays - it's not a sodding holiday, it's Christmas!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 24/12/2020 16:38

I so agree.

It’s Merry Christmas

And Happy New Year.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 24/12/2020 16:40

I always say Happy as my grandmother didn't like Merry. For her we should be happy at the birth of Christ. It is just the norm to me now.

bornatXmastobequiet · 24/12/2020 16:40

It is a holiday though, isn’t it? A proper Holy Day. Anyway, Season’s Greetings to all.

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 24/12/2020 16:40

Oof, no, "merry Christmas" sounds drunken and ruddy faced. Ghastly.

And I say "happy holidays" and "seasons greetings" because a) it's not just Christmas, it's also Yule and Hannukah and b) why not?

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2020 16:41

Just pondering now..is there any other occasion where we wish each other. “ Merry xxxx”? For example, we say Happy Easter, Happy New Year, Happy Hanukkah etc but I can’t think of another “ Merry”. Which is why it’s so important to say it once a year!

(still lighthearted)

FoxyTheFox · 24/12/2020 16:42

Feliz navidad, vipers.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 24/12/2020 16:44

I thought ‘Happy Christmas’ was British and ‘Merry Christmas’ was American.

Emeraldshamrock · 24/12/2020 16:44

Happy Christmas. Xmas Smile

0blio · 24/12/2020 16:45

I agree OP, it's Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

And there's a special place in hell reserved for people who say 'Happy New Year' before the 1st of January 😝

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2020 16:45

@StillCoughingandLaughing. I think it’s the other way round, but I might be wrong.

OP posts:
ramblingsonthego · 24/12/2020 16:46

My mum hates "merry christmas" as she doesn't drink alcohol (and never has) and says it has drunk connotations. I think she got it from her mum.

I say both, can't see anything to get my knickers in a knot about though.

Lovestonap · 24/12/2020 16:48

You are wrong. American is merry Christmas and happy holidays. British is happy Christmas. Pretty sure Dickens came up with Merry Christmas but it just sounds so shit to say out loud

Charlie63849 · 24/12/2020 16:49

HAPPY CHRISTMAS
