To say it’s Merry Christmas not Happy Christmas?

It irrationally annoys me when people say Happy Christmas.

Where do you stand on 'Happy Holidays'?

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2020 17:19

But when I wish someone a Merry Christmas I mean I hope you have a nice time, not I hope you get rat arsed!

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2020 17:20

@Reallybadidea I’m fine with Happy Holidays. That sounds right.

If I were saying both together for some reason (can't think why I would be), I get the idea that 'Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year' rolls off the tongue better, but, if I were just saying "Happy Christmas" on it's own, which would be more normal, then, for me it is "Happy Christmas". Like many others, I associate being merry with having too much to drink.

Ladyks · 24/12/2020 17:25

Agree! It sounds wrong to me. But any well wishes from anyone during any holidays are always welcome, regardless of how they’re worded. I just can’t not laugh about it to myself, glad I’m not alone.

“MERRY” Christmas OP!

TheGoogleMum · 24/12/2020 17:26

I prefer 'Merry Christmas' but I dont get mad about it!

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2020 17:27

I’m not mad. Well not in the angry sense. I might be bonkers though.

YABU, Merry Christmas is a bit twee now, Happy Christmas is better.

LadyJaye · 24/12/2020 19:11

@katy1213

I've just had someone wishing me happy holidays - it's not a sodding holiday, it's Christmas!
I work with many international colleagues, who may be Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, lapsed or atheist or whatever: 'happy holidays' covers everything!
exLtEveDallas · 24/12/2020 19:27

I much prefer ‘Merry’ but then, I’m not Royalty Smile

To say it’s Merry Christmas not Happy Christmas?
HangOnToYourself · 24/12/2020 19:28

I often wish people a merry birthday just to fuck with them

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 24/12/2020 19:32

Merry Christmas was popularised from Dickens' A Christmas Carol. It's British in origin.
And who really cares? Merry, Happy, Holidays- accept them in the spirit of the season.

I hate Americanisms.
Brighterthansunflowers · 24/12/2020 19:37

God forbid people wish you well in a phrase you irrationally object to.

ImitatingAdulthood · 24/12/2020 19:38

I have found my people. Keep having to correct DH and family on this. Always merry Christmas, never happy Christmas.

MrsGrindah · 24/12/2020 19:39

@Brighterthansunflowers It’s just a bit of silliness.

Have a happy Christmas @MrsGrindah

DeciduousPerennial · 24/12/2020 20:01

Stop being such a grump. Have a mince pie.

scruffy20 · 24/12/2020 20:05

I thought Happy Christmas was ‘posh’ and Merry Christmas not so...

But Merry goes better with Happy New Year

Lookslikerainted · 24/12/2020 20:54

It’s whatever I want it to be. Harry chrissymas if j want it to be!

silverstarfish · 25/12/2020 16:37

The Queen wished everyone a ‘happy Christmas’ at the end of her speech today!

I say Happy Christmas.

Sewrainbow · 25/12/2020 17:01

My mum and nan were funny about "Merry Christmas" I think due to drunk connotarions. my mum eve had a 70s banner that said "Happy Christmas" which when young I never saw anyone else have the same.

You must tell the Queen she said Happy Christmas in her speech. YABU.
switswooo · 25/12/2020 19:29

So those of us who say Happy Christmas were right all along. Grin
