Remember to defrost your Turkey

Hopefully ianbu. If you have a frozen turkey ( I went with Cook this year), remember to take it out of the freezer and put it in the fridge.
Mine says 48 hours before cooking. So now! (Ish)

Lol. Not got a frozen one this year, but very wise and helpful advice! I would for sure have forgotten if I had a frozen turkey.

Blurberoo · 23/12/2020 07:37

And don’t forget to remove the giblets! My mother forgot to do both things on various Christmases. The house was filled with the festive smell of burning plastic falalalala lalalala!

DarceyDashwood · 23/12/2020 07:38

I willl never get a frozen Turkey again after the sheer stress of the defrosting process when I forgot to do this and then the fridge was filled with the Xmas food so I had to let it defrost in the garage. It was a very cold year but I was still convinced we would all get food poisoning (we didn’t). So fresh all the way for me now!

AnneTwacky · 23/12/2020 07:41

It's defrosting ready for Christmas.

Thanks for the reminder. Smile

AstridAv · 23/12/2020 07:45

Ohhh I don't do turkey but I've a lamb leg that I didn't even think to get out today. Thank you!

userxx · 23/12/2020 07:55

I'm collecting the turkey tomorrow, it's fresh but would I be ok to put it in the shed, not sure if it will fit in the fridge.

VivaDixie · 23/12/2020 07:58

I have no room in the fridge but will put it in the garage, it is bloody freezing in there! 👍

Have you a cool box big enough? That is what I am going to use Smile

I've kept turkey in the boot of the car before now. As long as you're not somewhere abnormally mike it will be fine.

If you have a large turkey it can take a lot longer than 48 hours to defrost in the fridge.

BumDiggyDiggyDiggyBumDiggyBum · 23/12/2020 08:00

My turkey is already cooked and stripped, and is in the freezer should I take mine out today too? And defrost in fridge as well?

SpiderinaWingMirror · 23/12/2020 08:01

I've kept the odd turkey in the shed garage after collecting! I went down the frozen line a few years ago after the peak madness that was ordering from Marks and Spencer (queues out the door to collect orders when they had shelves full!). I have never looked back. AS long as I remember to defrost it!

Ooooo I pulled mine out earlier. Like most people no space in the fridge so it's in the cold conservatory instead!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 23/12/2020 08:04

@Blurberoo the smell of Christmas past. My dmum did that several times!

OP posts:
Skipsurvey · 23/12/2020 08:05

i think delia recommends keeping in the car if you have nowhere else

emma8t4 · 23/12/2020 08:06

I’ve got my ham out which is getting cooked for tomorrow but thanks for a reminder

ZenNudist · 23/12/2020 08:12

I froze mine as soon as i bought it and want to stuff it Christmas eve. I got it out last night. It's in my fridge which is very cold and if it gets too full things freeze in there. I hope it defrosts.

I will have to find space to defrost my stuffing, pigs in blankets, carrot and Swede mash, and halloumi in blankets too.

I'm also defrosting mince pie sweet pastry.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 23/12/2020 08:17

Well it's freed up freezer space. Now the fridge is at critical level and this thread has reminder me I haven't bought sodding ham!

@NatMoz on the next "should I get a conservatory" thread I think the Christmas use as an extra fridge could be valuable input.

Pugdogmom · 23/12/2020 08:21

I took mine out at the same time as this post. Currently in fridge defrosting.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 23/12/2020 08:22

@Zagziggirl I think you can defrost at room temp but need to be a bit more careful that it does not get too warm.

OP posts:
SpiderinaWingMirror · 23/12/2020 08:24

And if you are going to defrost at room temperature, think Cats and indeed dogs.

OP posts:
BashfulClam · 23/12/2020 08:27

@Zagziggirl it’s not recommended but I have done it before and it was fine.

Anydreamwilldo12 · 23/12/2020 08:32

I always defrost mine on the bench, same with chicken. Slit the plastic wrap to let air in and let it do it's thing. I don't want to take the chance of it not defrosting in time in the fridge.

Anydreamwilldo12 · 23/12/2020 08:33

And putting meat on a metal baking tray help it to defrost much quicker
