DH and the bloody sodding double garage!!!

Pumpertrumper · 23/12/2020 06:54

DH and I had a bit of a set to yesterday.
We rarely argue but he drives me mental over the double garage!

When we bought the house we were so excited about the amazing storage space. We don’t keep cars in it as have a large private drive.

But EVERY.SINGLE.TIME I suggest we put something in the garage DH reacts like I’m asking him to drop it directly on his testicles.
Moaning, groaning, eye rolling and complaining. Muttering under his breath and claiming there’s ‘no room’ and he’s ‘fed up’ with it being such a mess.

There is plenty of room. Lots of floor space and easy to walk around in.

It’s a mess because DH uses it for all his stuff and doesn’t tidy it but it’s nowhere near ‘full’ or even ‘cluttered’.

There are several piles of things that need taking to the tip. I’m pregnant and they’re too much for me to move alone but DH never gets around to it and just seems to enjoy complaining.

I’ve suggested he get a skip in (there’s not enough to justify it- but the way he talks you’d think he’d fill 15) but again he’s not organising it- just complaining.

Does anyone else’s DH get this possessive over the blooming garage?

Oh the small stuff I just toss in there. We have a couple of big plastic containers in there (half full) so I can toss occasional items in there.

I have to ask him to move some stuff because I can’t whilst pregnant. Bit heavy/ awkwardly shaped...etc. Tbh I find it very frustrating as much preferred just doing stuff myself. DH never noticed and it kept the peace. The items we argued about yesterday were DS’s stuff he’s outgrown but will be needed for number 2. We’ve never even been in the attic. God forbid I suggest that, he might get around it to before summer...if I’m lucky.

I’m scared to give him another storage space to behave this way about Grin

Well, the few days before Christmas isn’t the right time but I’d be telling him to get it sorted how he wants it or stop complaining. He can do it on his first day off after Christmas.

Pumpertrumper · 23/12/2020 07:34

I told him he could either put it in the garage or store it in his study (he would rather die than do that it’s his baby) but it WAS NOT staying in my dining room for Christmas and If he didn’t move it I’d do it myself and any damage to me/baby would be on his head.

He moved it. Muttering under his breath!

What was it?

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 23/12/2020 07:36

You should paint a line halfway along the floor of the garage to 'denote' his storage space, and 'your' storage space.

Fbtw · 23/12/2020 07:36

Also. Surely it’s both your dining rooms.

You’re as bad 😁(joke)

ReefTeeth · 23/12/2020 07:38

Oh this is me Blush

We have a double bgarage with one car in it.

We also have a boxing bag, a cross fit machine, free weights, a work bench, boxes of clothes and books stacked on shelves, all our shoes stored out there and other crap

Dh keeps waiting to buy more stuff to put in there and I get a bit huffy! He's a bloody horder.

wherethewildthingis · 23/12/2020 07:41

Our garage is an absolute mess but my husband is a complete weirdo about his car. Cannot have any kind of clutter or items in his car, even the boot. So will bring stuff in at night and stack it up by the front door. These usually are his work things that he needs for outdoor work!

wigglerose · 23/12/2020 07:41

I have the opposite problem. DH and I have lived together for over a decade and we've never had a place he hasn't wanted to fill. Drives me fucking potty, particularly when he 'replaces' things but refuses to throw out the old thing. We currently have two hoovers and two hand held hoovers. The old ones are for crap things and the new ones for best, apparently. Hmm

TW2013 · 23/12/2020 07:41

@Chocolatedeficitdisorder

You should paint a line halfway along the floor of the garage to 'denote' his storage space, and 'your' storage space.
I was going to suggest the same. Dh is similar.
FippertyGibbett · 23/12/2020 07:42

It’s your garage too, put whatever you want in it.

drspouse · 23/12/2020 07:43

You are probably better off storing clothes in the loft as they may get damp in the garage [nothelpfulemoji]

Lillyhatesjaz · 23/12/2020 07:48

Our garage was full of our stuff bikes, tools etc, then we had extra stuff from both set of parents having died. DH got some large floor to ceiling shelving from screwfix, we still have loads of stuff but now we can find things we need. Our loft is in a similar state

Goatinthegarden · 23/12/2020 07:52

Oh, our garage has always been a place I never ventured to. It’s an old 1920s number, crumbling and full of spiders. No idea what DH was up to when he went out there.

We just got it completely renovated and now it’s clean and shiny. DH is annoyed that suddenly I want to be included in his garage games. I now have a Pinterest board dedicated to garage organisation...

Galvia · 23/12/2020 07:57

@waffleblock are you meGrin?
So relatable!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/12/2020 08:00

My DH is obsessed with tidying the garage.
It's small and full. We need space in there for a trailer of camping equipment, a 16ft Canadian Canoe, a rather large motorbike, normal bikes x4, a collection of scooters, a lawnmower, power tools, unused furniture, packing boxes, unused gym equipment, tool boxes, a nuclear reactor, the ark of covenant etc. Everything has its place. I find the chainsaw hanging from the roof a bit terrifying...

FortunesFave · 23/12/2020 08:05

My Dh is weird about his sheds..."his" sheds I say because they became his as soon as we moved in and they're FULL of shit.

Terribly messy and cluttered.

He won't tidy them....he stresses about them but won't do it.

I'm going to do it when he's not here.

Just put things in boxes. Not throw anything away. It's ridiculous.

burntpinky · 23/12/2020 08:08

We are (hopefully!) buying a house with 2 stables which DH has his eye on for storage so I am expecting trouble!!! We are going to extend the shit out of the house so I’m going to make sure lots of storage is built in so he can bloody well use that!

Sally872 · 23/12/2020 08:08

My dh is the same. I can't put anything in the garage in case I make it untidy he complains about doing it himself. Now I just put it in the middle of garage for him to put away at his convenience. He moans but he moans anyway at least the stuff is out of the house.

NotOfThisWorld · 23/12/2020 08:09

My parents in law fell out so much about their huge garage they ended up having to draw a line down the middle and have half each (no joke).

Zubla · 23/12/2020 08:13

@flyingant

We need to see pictures Grin
Good idea or a short video.....
madcatladyforever · 23/12/2020 08:17

Yeah the loft filled to the gills with important stuff. When we got divorced he said he didn't have room for all of it and I could sell it on ebay. Took me three weeks to clear all the worthless crap that I couldn't possibly sell and take it to the tip.

DipSwimSwoosh · 23/12/2020 08:20

Yes store the clothes in the loft. Just go up there. That's perfectly possible when pregnant. Not sure why you are putting everything in the garage when it sounds like you have lots of space elsewhere. It would annoy me too!

Eckhart · 23/12/2020 08:20

Why aren't you enforcing your boundary here? He needs to understand that the garage isn't his. He's behaving like it is, and you're fed up with him complaining, but you are also taking no action and just complaining. If you want space to put more things in the garage, tell him you'll make the space yourself by shoving his mess to one side, unless he does it himself. Give him a time limit. Follow through.

At worst, you'll end up having to shove his stuff to one side, and listen to him complaining. But you already have to listen to that. And if you do move his stuff, leave it in such a way that he won't want you to do it again in the future. So you only have to do it once.

Reedwarbler · 23/12/2020 08:21

Just order a skip op. Easy done, especially as you have a drive to put it on. We have one every few years and go through the whole house and garden having a chuck out, very cathartic. But yes, my H is a bit like this about 'his' garage, and also 'his' loft, and putting anything in either of these may cause a bit of teeth sucking. On the plus side, he keeps it all tidy and well ordered, which I wouldn't.
