Healthy eating or low carb?

CardoMondo · 22/12/2020 20:53

I’m in two minds. I need to lose 2 stone. I know I can do it quickly with low carb but a) it’s restrictive and difficult to stick to and b) not exactly healthy
Or I could just eat “healthy” and eat smaller portions. I know this would be a slower way to lose weight.

I’m going to work with my trousers undone. I must lose this weight ASAP.

Lifestyle change rather than diet is probably better. Christmas not the best time to start lol but logging what you eat, yes everything, for say a week will make you realise where you need to make changes. I don't log all the time but I do when I know I've slipped a bit sometimes. It also gives you the chart of protein, carbs etc so you can see which bit you need to aim for

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 22/12/2020 21:26

Cant you kind of do both? Slightly smaller meal sizes but increase the veg and then you'll naturally eat less carbs?

LordEmsworth · 22/12/2020 21:43

What's unhealthy or restrictive about low carb? I eat low carb and I don't find it either of those things... Confused

Pukkatea · 22/12/2020 21:49

I agree, why not both? Lean meats, healthy fats, leafy greens, reasonable portions. Low carb doesn't just mean bacon and cream.

emmathedilemma · 22/12/2020 21:50

Healthy eating. I can’t do low carb, I’m always starving and then I eat even more!

Merryoldgoat · 22/12/2020 21:52

Low carb IS healthy if done correctly.

Sceptre86 · 22/12/2020 21:59

I do low carb not zero carbs and as long as I work out too I drop weight. Low carb makes me feel fuller for longer and I actually enjoy it.

44PumpLane · 22/12/2020 22:00

Fast 800....moderate carb med style diet..... Excellent results--I've loat 2 stone since 1st Oct and I move to "maintenance" in Jan.

Read the book and make a start, I've never felt better.

MsAwesomeReindeer · 22/12/2020 22:02

I've been doing low carb for a while now and feel significantly healthier for it. I eat TONS of fresh veg, so that's got to be pretty healthy for me.

Ok so it's a bit restrictive in terms of stuff you can just grab and go. But you work around it and learn what you can get on lazy days.

Thisusernameistakenagain · 22/12/2020 22:03

5:2. Only 2 diet days. ignores ops question

Out of the two of them I'd do healthier eating as more sustainable, maybe a low carb for a couple of weeks to kick start.

MarshaBradyo · 22/12/2020 22:03

True

Healthy, lower carb has always worked for me. Focus on veggies and lean protein, weigh pasta and rice for sensible portions.

Ok so say I have steak for tea ... what can I have with it? It’s the sides I struggle with as my go to would be sweet potato

For me low carb reduces my appetite because it doesn’t cause as much release of insulin and the “hunger” hormone ghrelin, so it requires much less willpower. I say give it a go

MsAwesomeReindeer · 22/12/2020 22:09

Celeriac makes decent chips or mash. It's got a slightly strange taste to it, but I rather like it. My go to has changed to roasted veg, so courgettes, aubergines, peppers, mushrooms, etc. In some sort of yummy creamy sauce.

JillyCareful · 22/12/2020 22:09

Agree with fast 800 and or 5-2. It’s a bit low Carby but not as strict as Atkins/ keto. Look at the Lose a stone in 3 weeks tv show.

DianaT1969 · 22/12/2020 22:16

I agree with pp, celeriac chips or mash would be lovely with steak, mushrooms, broccoli and a little cream sauce.

MasterMargarita · 22/12/2020 22:17

I have been doing low carb for about a year. Not restrictive at all. Rice is swapped for cauli rice, pasta is swapped for courgetti, potatoes are swapped for any roasted/boiled/steamed non-root vegetable. With steak I would have savoy cabbaged stir-fried with smoked bacon and garlic, or cauliflower cheese, or roasted cherry tomatoes with garlic and onions, or creamed leeks, or roasted aubergine, courgette, broccoli, cauli and onions.
Honestly, possibilities are endless Wink

MasterMargarita · 22/12/2020 22:19

Oh and remember, low-carb isn't no-carb. I still have a small bread roll with my soup or a wrap for lunch.

DBML · 22/12/2020 22:20

Healthy eating.

I have lost 3.5 stone since August eating healthy. I calorie count and allow for treats.

I tried low carb before that, lost 2 stone and gained it all and more back because it was spectacularly hard to stick to. I was severely depressed on keto.

PurpleDaisies · 22/12/2020 22:29

Celeriac is the only vegetable I don’t like. It tastes like feet.
Give me a sweet potato any day.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/12/2020 22:40

Whatever you choose, look at your portion sizes. Just make them little bit smaller. Then maybe little bit more. Look at the recommended serving sizes. From what i heard, and from my experience, portion sizes are one of the most common problems.

For example over eating just an egg a day (70 cal), gives over 25k calories extra a year. Fewer spoonfuls can make big difference, though slowly. It's interesting and eye opening to put these things into long term perspective, it helped me to realise the small things which can have bog effect

PurpleDaisies · 22/12/2020 22:40

it helped me to realise the small things which can have bog effect

Broccoli does that to me.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/12/2020 22:41

😂 BIG difference

PurpleDaisies · 22/12/2020 22:42

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

That’s an excellent typo. Grin
