Dog urinating on gate post

82 replies

Passmetheselectionbox · 22/12/2020 18:01

Today I was trying to walk out of my front gate. However I had to step over a puddle of dog urine while the owner let her dog urinate on my gate post. The owner made no attempt to move her dog away and seemed to think her mobile phone conversation was much more important than respecting other people's property. She did not apologise - heaven forbid she would have to pause her phone conversation.

AIBU to think this is disgusting, selfish and rude of the dog owner?

So dog pissed on pavement?
The dog did it on my gate post and driveway. It can do what it likes on the public pavement, but dog owners should be respectful of private property, unless they are self centred and selfish.

I don't think I'm an entitled dog owner but I do think this is a ridiculous thing to get worked up over. We live on a planet which we have to share with animals, both domestic and wild. Do you get this upset when a bird craps on your window? I saw a squashed frog in the middle of road the other day, how dare it die there and upset my poor delicate eyes!

Dog wee outdoors will cause minimal smell or damage. Dog poo on the other hand is gross and it's a pet hate when people don't pick up after their dogs.

There really are far far worse things to worry about right now.

But it's horrible. Why should it be acceptable? It's not.
Passmetheselectionbox · 22/12/2020 19:04

@Laiste

Awkward to be standing there with your dog pissing up someone else's property while they are right there. Dog owner should have acknowledged it and offered an apology.
I imagine dog owner was too selfish to care about anyone but themselves. Oh well it takes all sorts.

@LastTrainEast

Can't blame the dog, but rub the owners nose in it to train them not to allow it again.
Great post. I am sure dog owner would change her mind quickly!

I was about to ask if this was a real or fake wee but you said you had to step over a puddle.

I make sure that my dog does his first wee of the walk on the verge outside my house or in my front garden. He will then do ‘phantom wees’ on the rest of the way round where only a few drops come out as it’s an automatic reaction to others that have been on that spot.

I still try to be careful where he does his phantom wees though if I can because people jump to conclusions very quickly.

Toomanyparsnips · 22/12/2020 19:07

Yeah that is gross. I would drag my dog away in those circumstances.
Years ago I lived in Paris, and one day I opened the front door of my apartment block to find a dog HAVING A SHIT ON MY FRONT DOORSTEP. The owner just sauntered off like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Passmetheselectionbox · 22/12/2020 19:08

@Nottherealslimshady

I dont let my dog wee on peoples gates or at the entrances to houses. It belongs on public streets not private property I think.

Someone watched their dog cock their leg up in my car and piss on it and I think that's disgusting.

Honestly, someone letting their dog pee on another person's car really does show how utterly self centred some people are. Most such dog owners would probably be the first to drag their dog away from peeing on their own car, but don't care if it's someone else's car.

I wouldn't let my dog do it, some people are just annoying, antisocial, dickheads.
So true! Dogs can be such lovely animals, it's just a shame about some of the self entitled owners.

You sound like a really responsible owner, thank you. If only all dog owners were like you.

nope

vinegar, orange whatever has NEVER worked on our dogs.....had a dog in the family all my life!

@LisaLee333 lol....the rain will wash away the urine from the dog op saw at her post.....jeez.....

theres no magic cure....its just marking, not always full on urinating. few drops here and there, this lamppost,that gate post....several times on a walk

Passmetheselectionbox · 22/12/2020 19:12

@emilyfrost

YANBU but dog owners have no hygiene boundaries 🤷‍♀️
I agree this is true about some dog owners. Just because they are hygienic and disgusting, it doesn't mean the rest of us want to be.

Wild animals arent pets with owners in control. My dogs don't pee on others properties because I purposely don't let them near other people's property it's not rocket science Confused If you can't control your dog don't have one.
Very true.

I certainly wouldn’t let my dog pee up someone’s gatepost, they’d be dragged away if they tried. That’s pretty horrible, plus it’ll stink.

DieCryHate · 22/12/2020 19:18

I don't let my dog wee or poo on driveways, paths or front gardens. He knows he can go in our garden so he should never be busting when we go for a walk. I do let him go to the loo on communal areas even if it's opposite someone's house (obviously I pick poo up).

@TeenageMutantNinjaCovid

It is lucky- like when a pigeon craps on your head.

GreyMary23 · 22/12/2020 19:22

@sparklygoldtinsel It's no more horrible than the multitude of other germ ridden things on our pavements though Confused people just like to have a pop about dogs because they believe their owners should stop them. Which they should if at all possible. But on the matter of germs and horrible-ness, nobody is stopping foxes, birds, mice or hedgehogs from defecting all over your property so that argument holds little weight.

Unlike a poo you can hardly pick it up or do anything about it other than try and move your dog which I would do if I was quick enough.

But in all honesty I really couldn't get worked up about it if I saw it happening to my gate post. People should have basic manners yes, but others really do need to have a bit more tolerance over such small and harmless things.

I agree with you OP. Really antisocial behaviour. Squirt the bloody owner with vinegar.
I agree. I would prefer to squirt the dog owner with pee and see how unconcerned they remain.

This reminds me of a delightful mother at our school. She was walking her children up the only footpath to the primary school and she was 10 seconds away from the school entrance when she shrieked at another child to get out of the way because her dog was trying to do a crap on the footpath.

I try to only let my dog go on the grass verges when I walk him - I let him sniff at posts etc., but I pull him away if he shows signs of wanting to wee. I must admit though, occasionally he has caught me off guard and started before I realised as we pass things, but I do try to avoid it.

NotOfThisWorld · 22/12/2020 19:49

Honestly it is very rude to just stand there while your dog pisses on someone's property and not even apologise or attempt to stop it. I wouldn't get too worked up about it but YANBU OP.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 22/12/2020 20:04

I once had a man call the police on me because of this. His wall HmmThey turned up as he was getting nasty. They told him not to be so ridiculous. Then bollocked him for being aggressive.

Skyla2005 · 22/12/2020 20:51

It was bad manners of the owner. I would hose it down so others don’t keep going there as they go where others have been. Having said that during the night or when your not looking the world and his wife are probs pissing up it so won’t make a blind bit of difference !

LovingCountryLife · 23/12/2020 20:13

Be honest there was no ‘puddle of piss’, was there? When dogs pee on posts it’s a simple marking of territory, not properly relieving themselves. There would be a small amount of wee, not a ‘puddle’.

But why make a (boring story) even more dull by being factual eh ?
