to think that it wont be possible to "sneak" into ROI via NI?

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/12/2020 00:44

Not me, someone I know.

Supposed to be going to ROI to visit family and obviously now cant go direct, so she is thinking of going to Belfast and driving down through the border to ROI.

2 issues, with no proof of destination in NI , will they even be allowed off the boat? And isnt there a huge risk of being stuck there, which would mean missing work and would cause them massive money problems?

Unfortunately due to the idiocy of the DUP, those of us living in Ireland are apparently not allowed to close our own border with NI (I live in Ireland and have family in NI so am allowed to say this), and thus, despite all of our hard work, thanks to idiots like your friend we will be swamped with this new virus strain in the coming days. And we have no NHS!!!

I have told friends I would volunteer to police the border myself if I was allowed - we are all so fed up with this "open borders" malarkey. And if the French decide to close their borders to us, our spineless politicians will probably still opt to keep the border with NI open.

stuffedforchristmas · 22/12/2020 18:14

That's interesting. In a perfect world, the DUP would love a closed border and it's Sinn Fein etc who would hate it.

Annasgirl · 22/12/2020 18:20

Yes -@stuffedforchristmas - do you think I support Sinn Fein? I would happily leave NI where it is - I would never in a million years vote for reunification while there are so many Unionists living there. Even the nationalists have little in common with people in the South, it is unfortunate, but they all have more in common with each other than with anyone living in the other 3 provinces of Ireland. Donegal is different, as they are locked into a close relationship due to their location, and have lots of live/work cross border arrangements.

RuggerHug · 22/12/2020 18:32

fbtw No, it's part of the United Kingdom is on the island of Ireland, not Britain. That's why it's called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Fbtw · 22/12/2020 18:36

Sorry yes I stand corrected @RuggerHug. I do know that I’m just trying to do 23 things at once and lazy phraseology crept in.

RuggerHug · 22/12/2020 18:45

No worries fbtw it's just one of those things that gives me the twitch and I have to point out in case anyone starts saying itBlush

PimlicoJo · 22/12/2020 18:50

It's no different to people leaving Tier 4 areas of the UK to travel to other parts of the UK in a lower tier. It's selfish behaviour, but sadly some people don't care.

Fbtw · 22/12/2020 18:54

@RuggerHug I do know but I’d corrected my post 3 or 4 times already coz I’d been lazy and the dog was jumping at me and the painter wanted to know something about ceilings and I was cooking dinner ... I was trying really hard not to inadvertently say something offensive and I screwed up.

Fbtw · 22/12/2020 18:55

And actually, I was right the first time

Eh one issue. spreading the virus.
Edel2019 · 22/12/2020 18:58

@PyongyangKipperbang

I agree that it is morally an appalling thing to do, but since when did "what is right" trump "what I want" to a certain type of person?

Apparently there are no border checks so she can just drive from north to south....which I did question but it "will be fine" according to her.

Thats taking out of the equation the fact that NI are in talks about shutting their own ports and airports.

Ok but why are you trying to help her?!
gallbladderpain · 22/12/2020 19:00

Doesn't anyone into Northern Ireland from the mainland now have to fill in a form of where they will be staying and quarantine for 10 days as of today's developments ?
So could hardly put on that they were travelling to the south ?
Thats what ive gathered from the news today but maybe i'm wrong

blubberyboo · 22/12/2020 19:02

I think the whole point is that the Gardai and PSNI shouldn’t have to stand policing any border. The NI ROI border stays open for sensitive reasons and during the pandemic to allow free flow of freight and essential
work travel
Everyone knows the circumstances when they are allowed to travel depending on the relevant guidance from the governments concerned
If you are in Scotland wales or particular tiers in England you have already been told by your own administration not to travel. The only ppl coming to NI should be from the lower tiers. Flights and ferries will have to operate for those who commute and for emergencies.

and ROI has said they should not enter ROI
That it! ... Enough said!

OP your friend probably could get through, but that doesn’t mean they should, and it doesn’t guarantee they won’t get stopped and turned by the guards, or be told to isolate for 10 days on arrival in NI

stuffedforchristmas · 22/12/2020 19:17

annasgirl

I hadn't thought about who you support and don't care.

I think your sweeping comments are ignorant and ill advised.

MysweetAudrina · 22/12/2020 19:21

@RuggerHug

Mysweetaudrina......I don't know if you're being sarcastic or thick but it's not just her family she would bring it to...It's EVERYONE THEY WILL COME IN CONTACT WITH FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, AND EVERYONE THEY COME IN CONTACT WITH AND EVERYONE etc etc. Get it?
Not likely to come into much contact with anyone here as level 5 restrictions in place from 24th with a few caveats.
LizzieAnt · 22/12/2020 19:23

I'd have thought the majority of Irish people very much support an open border? I know I do, even though it's problematic at present because of Covid.

Aerielview · 22/12/2020 19:27

@Sufferingjaysus

Omg at those of you who think there is an actual ‘British border’ on the island of Ireland

Idiots

Of course it's a British border. It's not an Irish border. Who imposed the border on the country? The British government, not the Irish government.
blubberyboo · 22/12/2020 19:30

Apparently @annasgirl is imposing the border on the island of Ireland to keep the unionists away Hmm

blubberyboo · 22/12/2020 19:37

When ironically this whole post is about someone who has family in ROI and therefore presumably from ROI originally themselves (or some connection) trying to get there.

Not really NIs problem

idontknowaboutmortgages · 22/12/2020 19:37

What would happen if she gets to Ireland and falls seriously ill with Covid? Would she be looked after as an emergency case?

blubberyboo · 22/12/2020 19:39

But sure off you go and stand at the border and keep your own citizens and their families out

YouBoughtMeAWall · 22/12/2020 19:47

Really lovely to repeatedly see NI being referred to as the “back door” to Ireland. Hmm

Streamside · 22/12/2020 19:48

I work in border areas and cross the border frequently but the main routes are heavily policed. A huge concern for me would be what happens if an accident occurs. I really don't think you would be covered if you're breaking the law.

Lookslikerainted · 22/12/2020 19:53

It would be very easy to do this. Travelling from the south to the north I crossed the border 8 times.

Emeraldshamrock · 22/12/2020 19:58

I don't support an open border through a pandemic had we went for a whole Island approach I'd feel differently.
I've never known as many defiant conspiracy theorists as I've come across in NI that is just the government never mind the political divide in communities it is like the left hand has to do the opposite to the right for the sake of it.
I think many will head down this week.

to think that it wont be possible to "sneak" into ROI via NI?
