Does anyone not bother with the full Xmas Dinner?

As much as I love Xmas Dinner.. This is the first Xmas as a single mother to my little girl.. Which I'm really looking forward to.. WIBU just not to bother will a full on dinner just for us two? Tbh.. Roast dinner isn't my DDs favourite.. She'd just be happy with a plate of roasties and Yorkshire puddings...or pasta!! Is it a bit killjoy not to do Xmas Dinner for 1.5 people? Is anyone else not bothering with a full on dinner?

Hi there. Im a single mum to a 3 year old and have decided to do cottage pie with the trimmings as thats their favourite rather than mess about making something they won't enjoy as much. Its your dinner so do what you think is best. Have a lovely day

MimosaFields · 21/12/2020 19:16

Same here. It's only my 17 year old and I. We'll eat whatever we decide we fancy but probably not a roast dinner.

didireallysaythat · 21/12/2020 19:17

One year I just did sausages for the kids (maybe a few pigs in blankets) during the day and I think we had frozen party food once they were in bed.

Pebbledashery · 21/12/2020 19:18

I think it's just "tradition" isn't it.. But i wouldn't eat mine until DD goes to bed anyway so I'd be eating on my own 😜.. Just grateful to be away from the horribly abusive relationship I was in this time last year and spending Xmas happy and safe xx

We eat whatever we want. The Christmas police aren’t going to arrest you for not having turkey with all the trimmings.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/12/2020 19:19

We don't on Christmas Day. We usually have a BBQ. Then the traditional dinner at some other point, with wider family.

We've decided to be formal this year and dressing up on Boxing Day for dinner.

RumJerrySailorRum · 21/12/2020 19:20

It's just me and DH, we are having a picnic tea (yes I know that is a loathed term).

Pate, ham, cheese, salmon, prawns etc
Crackers, par baked bread, mini pizzas, chicken bites, spring rolls

The plan is to just graze as and when we are hungry.

I've not hosted for years as the house is to small, and last time I did, we did a running buffet so I could invite everyone!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/12/2020 19:21

As I tell to everyone.
You do what makes you happy. Fancy full roast? Do it. Fancy a freezer pizza? Do it.
It's about what makes people happy.

Northernmum100 · 21/12/2020 19:21

Do what you both love and make it as elaborate or as easy as you like. Myself, DH and two two teens never have the traditional dinner, we have had fillet steaks , roast beef, beef Wellington, just what we fancy from year to year.

Whatever you do, I hope you both have a brilliant day.x

Pebbledashery · 21/12/2020 19:21

@RumJerrySailorRum dare I say it... Picky bits 😊

We often have a non traditional meal, even if we're hosting. We have things like boeuf bourguignon and potato dauphinoise (made on Christmas Eve and heated on the day) so all we have the cook is veg. Makes life much easier.

Absolutely 😂

Pebbledashery · 21/12/2020 19:29

Some of these comments are giving me inspiration :) it's just such a big performance making Xmas Dinner when you aren't hosting for people.

I'd happily eat a plate of roasties and yorkies in gravy. They're the best bit.

buttcrackmcheese · 21/12/2020 19:32

I'm making Mexican for me and the kids! Easy, serve yourself food. Haven't had a 'proper' Christmas dinner in years.

nosswith · 21/12/2020 19:32

Christmas pudding has always been left to another day, after my dad once fell asleep during the Queen's Christmas broadcast.

TheFrogsNeedFeeding · 21/12/2020 19:34

I'm with you OP, I'm sacking off Christmas dinner this year, the kids don't care for it, I'm not that bothered by it, so it just ready made party food here! Quite looking forward to the lack of cooking

Purplecatshopaholic · 21/12/2020 19:36

We’re having an Indian ..

kowari · 21/12/2020 19:36

It's just me and the teen and we are getting a takeaway. Christmas is about what makes you happy.

LutinDeSapin · 21/12/2020 19:37

Me! We let DC choose. And they've never chosen a roast.

MardyBicardi · 21/12/2020 19:37

I was about to say - picky bits, in fact I was going to go one up and say a “picky tea”
No fuss and you can just snuggle up and pick to your hearts content.

Alys20 · 21/12/2020 19:39

Doing roast beef, yorkshires and apple pie with custard. Not a mince pie or pig in blanket in sight. Just cook what you like to eat?

Pebbledashery · 21/12/2020 19:40

Amazed by the amount of people who don't do the traditional turkey and trimmings 😜😜😜

OP posts:
Splodgetastic · 21/12/2020 19:40

Do what you would like to have! I always think the trimmings are the best bits anyway.
