As much as I love Xmas Dinner.. This is the first Xmas as a single mother to my little girl.. Which I'm really looking forward to.. WIBU just not to bother will a full on dinner just for us two? Tbh.. Roast dinner isn't my DDs favourite.. She'd just be happy with a plate of roasties and Yorkshire puddings...or pasta!! Is it a bit killjoy not to do Xmas Dinner for 1.5 people? Is anyone else not bothering with a full on dinner?

Just joining with others to say eat what you and your child like when you like. I did the whole christmas dinner thing including home made puddings and cakes when I was a teenager (I did enjoy cooking but family circumstances were miserable). It took me many years of being alone to fully stop making a big meal for myself and just eat what I want. I will probably follow my usual winter routine of reading in bed in the morning and eating much later. I am old and that makes me very happy, I am already noticing how much quieter the busy road outside is so looking forward to silence and peace . Honestly it took me years to get over Christmas expectations. So unnecessary.

Has anyone else never watched the Queen's Speech? When I was young I would have been washing up in a cold kitchen but I was also a fierce republican for many years.(Also from quite a politically argumentative family). I passed up the opportunities to see both Prince Charles on his installation as PofW and the Queen on her Silver Jubilee. I did say I am old. Now I am wondering if it may be her last but still as purposely banal as ever I am sure. On the other hand now I do admire that dedication to the public duty of maintaining banality at all costs. I mean look what happens when we elect people! How weird to be the Queen - to know in your heart you are just an ordinary human being and yet to act as if chosen by God.

My best friend does a mega fry up.Complete with Birds eye waffles.

MotherExtraordinaire · 22/12/2020 09:35

We're also a family of 2 and though I normally insist on veggies for every meal. For Christmas this year I've said that a plate a of meat, Stuffing and Yorkshire pudding can be their Christmas Dinner! Though I'll still have the veg!

Rowgtfc72 · 22/12/2020 17:34

Me and dh only usually get Christmas day off so I'm not spending it cooking!
Dd at 13 is plenty old enough to put frozen pizza in the oven for usGrin

MrsExpo · 22/12/2020 17:37

Just the two of us ... we're having curry!! It's what we'd normally eat on a Friday evening, and we both hate turkey, so why not!! Enjoy whatever makes it feel like a special day for you.

Ghostlyglow · 22/12/2020 17:59

Haven't had one since I left home 30 years ago.

Sn0tnose · 22/12/2020 18:40

I think that, if you’re not religious, the whole point of Christmas is to have a lovely, lovely day. And the only way that will happen is if you’re doing stuff that makes you happy.

didireallysaythat · 22/12/2020 20:40

We might have chicken and chips. Might just see what takes my fancy in the day

VerbenaGirl · 22/12/2020 20:43

Just make whatever you’ll both enjoy most. If you can’t on Christmas Day, when can you :-)

CoRhona · 22/12/2020 20:50

We are all having a roast except DD (12) who is having macaroni cheese Xmas Grin

Sweetpea1989 · 22/12/2020 20:58

Our local curry house will be cooking our Xmas curry and I can’t bloody wait!

iamyourequal · 22/12/2020 21:06

Have whatever the two of you fancy. I only cook a big roast if family are round and expect it. We are a family of 2 adults & 2 kids, just us this Christmas. We will be having baked pasta, garlic bread & salad and a ready-made dessert. I’ve lost sooo many Christmas days stuck in the kitchen all day so I try and avoid it now whenever possible. Have a lovely day relaxing and playing with your little DD!

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 22/12/2020 21:16

Nah I love a roast it's my fav so I'm doing turkey but with frozen veg as I cannot be bothered to peel veg. One kids having turkey the others opted for pepperoni pizza as he never enjoys a roast.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 22/12/2020 21:17

Aunt Bessies roast potatoes and Yorkshires too 😂

OrangeBananaFish · 22/12/2020 21:21

I wish. I'm not a fan of the Sunday roast and that's all Xmas dinner is, a glorified Sunday roast. Unfortunately everyone around me loves it. Every year we go to my parents and every year my mum asks what we want. My suggestion of Pizza never goes down well. I keep trying though Grin

gmailconfusion2 · 22/12/2020 21:22

We have what we fancy, so I normally have lasagne/spinach and Ricotta canollini/lidl veggy pie he normally has steak/ribs with sprouts and chips. Best year was just 14 different desserts

Bouledeneige · 22/12/2020 21:28

Just me and DD20 this year (usually cooking for 16). We are having lobster, followed by salmon for DD, turkey and pigs in blankets for me, and then all the trimmings, parmesan parsnips, sprouts, roasties, bread sauce and gravy. Then chocolate tart for pudding.

U2HasTheEdge · 22/12/2020 21:51

I will do a buffet again this year. I will do turkey and stuffing, braised red cabbage, pigs in blankets, baked potatoes and lots of nice stuff people can help themselves too throughout the day. There will be loads of variety and a mix of hot and cold food.

I like a Xmas dinner, but most of my family prefer a buffet.

inquietant · 22/12/2020 21:56

We don't, stopped about ten years ago when we couldn't get to the shops so had to make do, then realised the whole day was nicer without the huge cooking event anyway.

Every year we plan the menu with the kids. We like not cooking too much because then we have more time as a family.

Pebbledashery · 23/12/2020 10:44

I'm loving Pizza or Chicken and Chips on Xmas day :) DD would adore that hehe x
