To ask about how to unblock my ear

Coolieloach · 21/12/2020 14:28

I really don’t want to go to the chemist but my ear a blocked and I feel,I am completely deaf in one ear.
I gently used a cotton bud but nothing changes. Is it true olive oil can help? I’m not in much pain but it’s bothering me to the extent I want to try and clear it,
Any advice please?

I had this over the summer. Became quite painful and started getting ringing. Tried olive oil and didn't help, pharmacy gave me drops to help dissolve wax, didn't work! I became so desperate I went to the audiologist at Specsavers. Best £55 I spent all year! They have a little camera and showed me both ears totally bunged up, pretty gross. But he used a teeny vacuum thing and basically sucked all the wax out. I cannot tell you the relief when it was gone. Could hear again!
And DONT use a bud-nothing smaller than your elbow should go in your ear Smile.

This is appropriate for sporner’s corner really, but I used slightly warm olive oil to treat a blocked ear. I think I did it twice a day for three days and on the fourth day, I was using my in-ear headphones, pulled the headphone out of my ear and stuck to it was the biggest lump of wax you’ve ever seen. It was beautiful. So satisfying. Almost gave me fanny flutters it did.

My ears get blocked up frequently and this has been a game changer, and saved me very expensive trips to the audiologist for microsuction twice a year.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 21/12/2020 15:33

Oh I need this but too scared to put any sort of liquid in there! Looks like specsavers for me...

Lilac95 · 21/12/2020 15:35

Oh god don’t use otex! DP had a severely blocked ear, we used these drops, the wax came out but the otex created a layer over his ear drum and essentially causes his hearing to be poor. Booked in with a ear specialist who cleaned his ears out and said olive oil only or see someone about it

Lilac95 · 21/12/2020 15:36

Boots ans Specsavers do ear wax removal for around £50 but we found a local clinic that could fit him in the same week, may be worth a google

PerkingFaintly · 21/12/2020 15:47

Olive oil (for weeks) interspersed with one of these specially shaped syringes sorted my ears out when I had compacted wax.

Problem came from using ear plugs and the wax that eventually came out. Shock

I gave up warming the olive oil after a while. You don't use much each time and it didn't seem worth it – but perhaps would have worked quicker if I had?

PerkingFaintly · 21/12/2020 15:48

Ah that would have been better with the link

Olive oil does work, but be very careful if you're going to heat it up! I wouldn't bother, but if you want to, just leave a small amount in a bowl on a radiator for a while (no microwaves/pans) and use a teaspoon to tip it into your ear. Much easier if someone else does it, obviously.

surreymum89 · 21/12/2020 15:56

I always soak ears for a bit with olive oil and then with a small syringe and my head hanging over the sink gently syringe warm water into my ear , it does take a while but always works and very satisfying.

Will say it's probably not recommended by health professionals but I get desperate.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/12/2020 16:00

Olive oil works used twice a day over about four days.

Blood-heat is supposed to be best: my mother used to heat the oil in a teaspoon over the gas cooker flame and then use not a syringe but cotton wool to apply it. She would soak the oil into the cotton wool, touch it to check the temperature (it cools really quickly) and then put the cotton wool very loosely in my ear and I would lie on my side for a bit with that ear upwards so the oil could trickle in gently and there was no risk of banging anything into my ear and hurting it.

But this does get olive oil in your hair if you're not careful!

Mollyboom · 21/12/2020 16:09

I know this sounds grim but it really works- pee on some cotton wool (clear mid stream urine) and put it in your ear. I also used sudafed just in case the eustcahian tubes were blocked. I has been suffering realy badly for about 3 weeks with no relief provided by olive oil or other drops.

ittakes2 · 21/12/2020 16:12

Earoil via Amazon - but the most amazing thing is getting the wax vacuumed out by someone trained to do it. I thought the adverts were exaggerating with the wax that came out - they are really not. The feeling of pressure in my ear was relieved immediately.

britnay · 21/12/2020 16:12

please make sure that its medical grade olive oil and not the sort that you cook with!!!!!!!!
use it twice a day for up to a week and you should notice a difference.

UncleBunclesHouse · 21/12/2020 16:15

I had this a month or so ago, suspected water stuck, I found a dry ear spray on Amazon which is alcohol-based. It took a while but a combination of this and Otex eventually shifted it. You have my sympathy, it was very annoying!

YouBelongHere · 21/12/2020 16:17

I used the Otex ear drops and they worked wonders for me - put them in and laid still for 20 minutes, could hear some popping and there was a bit of discomfort but nothing too extreme. Went to sleep and when I woke up I could actually hear again. Saying that though, it worked wonders in the one ear but doesn't seem to have worked the same for the other which gets slightly blocked in my sleep. As others have said, probably depends how bad the blockage is.

Blocked ears are so annoying, I really sympathize!

Mylifeisboring · 21/12/2020 16:18

I use Earex advance drops twice a day for 3 days and then use an ear syringe I bought from Amazon. It's the only thing that works for me.

5foot5 · 21/12/2020 16:19

Both DH and I have had a problem with this this year.

Mine I stupidly caused myself with a cotton bud. I could tell as soon as I put the cotton bud in that it had pushed the wax in further; I could just fee it going in. I used Cerumol and after 2-3 weeks it cleared up and has been fine since.

DHs problems are more long standing. It first started last year and he eventually went to the GP. He also started using Earol and by the time he got to the GP it was nearly better. GP suggested getting them syringed. Because it seemed better he never got around to it. However, it has been a recurring problem this year. The oil helps a bit but it keeps coming back. After seeing these on another thread I have ordered a Wireless Otometer for him for Christmas. Some people speak highly of them.

garlictwist · 21/12/2020 16:21

I bought a spray from Amazon recently that worked to unblock my ear -no need to go to doctor or pharmacy.

JamMakingWannaBe · 21/12/2020 16:23

Definitely get a water schoosher thing! MAGIC! In the meantime, try schooshing warm water in with a Calpol syringe. You've got to do it fast to dislodge the wax. (I am not a medical professional).

mycatsbetterthanyours · 21/12/2020 16:23

Agree with all advice above. For those interested and not squeamish, check out Audiology Associates on YouTube . They post regular videos on earwax extractions. It's glorious to watch and so satisfying! Also lots of tips on how to deal with them. (I'm not affiliated with them in any way, shape or form. I just have odd tastes in what is entertaining!)

Purplewithred · 21/12/2020 16:24

Suctioning is the way to go. Instant relief. Nothing like it.

Olive oil in the meantime, no buds and none of those other drops either.

Youtube Audiology Associates - amazing videos, that is exactly what it feels like to have it done.

What was it? Something effective other than suction would be really useful for me!
JacobReesMogadishu · 21/12/2020 16:32

I have this from amazon. Previously I had the special syringe also available on Amazon but this is much better.

here

Christmassequins · 21/12/2020 16:35

Don't put urine in your ear and don't syringe them yourself. What if you have a perforated eardrum? Someone should always look in your ear first if it's going to be syringed. If it is wax, microsuction is the way to go, after softening the wax with olive oil first.
